This is a BIG joke on the part of Amazon, just in the same way that most of us, who actually do real business on the site, know that at least 50% of the reviews are a JOKE.

They are out-and-out BOGUS and Amazon has ENCOURAGED that for decades.

There were people in the U.S. writing reviews for the Sony RX10 II, that they claimed that they had bought from Amazon, 8 weeks BEFORE the camera started shipping in the U.S.!

I have review on some of my books from people who I know, just from what the review says, never saw the book let alone bought it.

Amazon, and here I speak as one who has MORE of a monetary stake in Amazon (in terms of the number of shares I own) that in any other ‘thing’ (including our (very modest) house) in the World. Yes, I am a genuine stakeholder. I want Amazon to do well. But on this issue I know that Amazon will always be disingenuous and even duplicitous. They WANT reviews — more stars the better. They EVENTUALLY published my 1-star review against the Sony a77 Mk II, but only after 72 hours when my 4- and 5-star reviews get published in seconds!

I do plan to attend the next shareholder meeting, in Seattle, in person. My main goal is to address the issue of Kindle books and the widespread misconception that you need a Kindle to read a Kindle eBook. That drives me nuts. Amazon share are going gangbusters. But the share price does not reflect quite a few things that are drastically wrong with this company — their encouragement of bogus reviews high on that list.

I am NOT a member of JANE — at least not as yet. I, however, get some e-mails from them forwarded by the “British Cars of New Hampshire” (BCNH) which we are members.

Since this event is open to non-members I thought I will SHARE it with you. It should be fun.

No, we don’t plan to be there. Over the last few days, with a BCNH monthly meeting coming up on Monday, June 1, 2015, I am confronting, for the first time, a DILEMMA! Am I that interest — and, moreover, do I really have the time — to just socialize with other British car owners! Yes, of course, being the ‘closet extrovert’ that I am, I would love it. And I would love seeing the cars. BUT whatever time I can spare I would rather be driving the MGB or XJ8 rather than chatting! Plus the meeting is in Candia. 1 hour drive, each way. It is a real dilemma. I will see what happens.

Plus I have to make time to go see some XJs!

P.S., Ignore the ‘2014’ TYPO.

“Smarter Balanced” assessment (or testing) is aligned to Common Core. It is basically one of the testing components of Common Core. Click image to access the “Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium” to learn more.

Don’t let the “Smarter Balanced” terminology confuse you. This is still about Common Core.

As I noted in this post, two weeks ago, the vote by the Alton Central School (ACS) School Board not to ‘support’ the use of ‘Common Core’ was taken at the September 16, 2013 meeting. So it would have been a year next week.

You would think that they have had plenty of time to come up with a strategy if not a plan.

Wasn’t this covered in the Strategic Plan? I don’t know. I haven’t looked recently.

From same article as above. Use that link to access original.

There are some statements in this article that are beyond the pale. It says that one of the Board Members was ‘NOT CONVINCED’ by the discussion and ‘the discussion’ appears to have hinged on ACS Superintendent, William (‘Bill’) Lander claiming that the State mandates that the test must be conducted. How many shades of gray can you have in that? Shouldn’t the Board have got better clarification of this BY NOW? They have had a year. Does the Board trust the Superintendent on these matters or do they not? Why are they openly questioning his claims? Shouldn’t he have, and I know he is super busy, put together a paper on this that the Board could have studied? He has had 11 months. As far as I know you can produce a baby in 9, so couldn’t these folks have got something sorted out in 11?

Further on it talks about the Chair ‘accusing’ a member of using a ‘crib sheet’ and that the two “went back and forth about this”! What is this. 4th Grade? Amazing.

Appears that this year’s Alton Central Middle School soccer team is irrepressibly ebullient to the extent of putting the ‘Energizer Bunny‘ to shame. Good for them. Bravo. What a joy.

These kids are so full of pep that even after a game, on the way back on the bus, they are practicing their skills and exercising. They seem to have developed an exercise regime, ideally suited for the inside of school buses, called “dodge the cleats”. That is pretty descriptive. I have to applaud the coaches for encouraging such initiative.

Such a shame that a boot should fly out of the bus window and smash the windscreen of the car behind. Kids will be kids. And they called the police! What next?

They were just playing “dodge the cleats”.

Of course this was just a sporting accident. So I hope it is left at that.

Right?

88246127001_2069184013001_961896998-193-1357162962288School has started and there are after school programs — in particular the sports programs.

But, ACS in its infinite wisdom has decided that the late buses will NOT start till mid-September!

Is this a JOKE?

This is grossly irresponsible at multiple levels, key among them being the blatant disregard for conserving resources, reducing pollution and helping Alton parents with their budgets. All Alton parents, alas, are not rich like the handsomely compensated School Administration. We have buses to reduce the amount of cars that have to go to and fro to pick up (and drop off) kids at school.

This is inexcusable. I am going to take this to as many places as I can and my angel will be, quite rightly, that of resource conservation.

IF ACS claims that this is a COST ISSUE I will laugh in their face. They didn’t budget for this? Why not?

If ACS can now afford all these lawyers they can’t afford to provide late buses?

The biggest problem we have is that most in Alton just don’t seem to care.

IF we had local elected officials that cared about such matters, at a minimum, the Selectmen would intervene.

They claim to teach the kids about recycling, energy conservation etc. and then they do this? What a joke.

This is bad. This is sad. This is Alton.

It was September 16, 2013, when the ACS School Board voted 3-to-2 not to ‘support’ use of ‘Common Core‘ at Alton Central School. Starting immediately after this landmark vote there was confusion as to what the vote was supposed to mean. Within 3 weeks the ever pugnacious ACS Superintendent, William ‘Bill’ Lander, was telling the ‘Laconia Daily Sun’ that the Board’s ‘rejection’ of Common Core has no immediate consequences — and let us now dwell on that word ‘immediate’. Of course we all understood that they wouldn’t and couldn’t change the plans for the 2013 – 2014 school year that was already underway.

But now we have started, as of yesterday, the 2014 – 2015 ACS School Year and Common Core is everywhere. I went to the ‘Open House’ last Thursday, and as ever it was good, positive and fun and it was a great pity that the new Acting Principal, William ‘Bill’ Lander, always busy with his heavy teaching schedule at Plymouth State (PSU) and his extensive repertoire of publications, was not there for usor at least we didn’t see him though we toured the whole school, end-to-end, and saw nearly everybody else. But we understand that he was there but I am puzzled as to why we didn’t see him because we were there from 5:30 till past 7pm. The new Associate Principal, Linda Willman shone — she was quite literally glowing. She is good news. She will do well. We are so happy that she, ignoring the meaningless titles, is heading up ACS. Good things will happen with her in charge.

I saw tons of ‘Singapore Math‘ books in various classrooms. I checked with a couple of teachers. Common Core is ALL GO.

So what gives?

Is the Board just going to forget that they had that vote?

Or is it that the Administration is going to ignore the board.

There is a bigger picture here, with these three incidents serving as landmarks:

Sept. 2013: Board votes against ‘Common Core’ administration continues with ‘Common Core’.

June 2014: Board overturns three bullying decisions made by the supposedly trained ACS Administration.

August 2014: The ACS Administration gets Diane M. Gorrow of the law firm Soule, Leslie, Kidder et. al. to write a letter to Jay C. Boynton, the ACS School Board’s attorney asking for a bullying hearing to be dismissed! When the letter appeared in my inbox it took me a second to work out the implications. The Superintendent is using a lawyer to communicate with the Board about a bullying hearing! As far as I knew the Administration ‘worked’ for the Board. Seems incongruous, if not downright wrong, to me — but what do I know. I just try to document this stuff BECAUSE nobody else does. I did not even realize that ACS now has, and it must mean, HIRES, two law firms: one by the Administration and the other by the Board. Who is paying for these lawyers — unless, of course, they are doing this pro bono because they like Alton and are committed to the cause of Public Education.

So, that is the state of play.

A couple of weeks ago I needed some flowers delivered to a patient at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in Lebanon.

I had no idea as to who could do this. So I just called up the DHMC switchboard and asked them. They must get quite a few of these calls since they gave me the answer right away.

They told me that they no longer had a florist ‘in house‘, but the florist that was there was the ‘Garden of Eden‘, in Lebanon, and that I should call them. They gave me their phone number, viz. 603-448-6000.

I checked them out on the Web. Seemed reasonable and decent. I called. Very helpful. Very nice. I placed an order.

It was delivered that afternoon. I gather it was a very impressive and pleasing arrangement. So I was glad. Money well spent.

So a call out for them.

If you need flowers sent to DHMC or Dartmouth College or thereabouts … call them.
