‘Schoodic Mountain’ from which the eponymous peninsula gets its name is NOT on the peninsula per se and definitely not within the bounds of Acadia National Park. The 1,060′ mountain is about 7 miles north of the peninsula and maybe 12 miles from the Schoodic part of the Park.

Do NOT get it confused with the 440′ ‘Schoodic Head‘ which is indeed within the park. The mountain is close to 2.5 times higher.

I happened to see it in a map of Downeast Maine while we were in Acadia. The State-owned “Donnell Pond Public Reserve” is HUGE. That is what caught my eye. So, I wanted to check it out. We were going to Schoodic anyway and this was but a minor detour. Glad we went (on Friday, June 29, 2018, the 5th (and last) day of our latest Acadia vacation).

The hike to the top was not difficult though it was a relatively warm and humid day. Took me 39 minutes to get to the top and a few minutes less to get down. But the bald peak is extensive and you can walk around it for hours.

Very rewarding hike with a very high ROI. Definitely recommend it.

The Fairy Houses Of ‘Monhegan Island’, Maine.

Monhegan Island Fairy House Anura Guruge July 2017 Sony a6500

We did not know about these amazingly creative and cute Fairy Houses until we serendipitously stumbled upon them — quite literally. Having hiked the west side of Monhegan Island we were heading back to the ‘Island Inn‘ (where we were staying) via the ‘Cathedral Woods‘ trail. See map below.

The first one we noticed was a wooden wreath-like structure, at eye-level, mounted on a tree — in what was a natural clearing in the woods. Then we started to realize that we were surrounded by Fairy Houses of all shapes, sizes and creativity. All along the trail for about 100 yards, on both sides and some set well back from the trail. There were even some built along a small stream. Very clever. Nice touch.

I, however, immediately knew that the ‘guardians’ of this MAGICAL island (viz. the ‘Monhegan Associates‘) would not be too happy about this proliferation of human construction. On my many trips to Acadia I had learned that building of stone cairns, a popular pastime for some, is significantly frowned upon (and could even land you in ‘trouble’ if you got caught). I was RIGHT in my contention. ‘They’ would rather that no Fairy Houses were built along the trails — BUT to be magnanimous it has been decided that IF they are to be built it has to be JUST ON that stretch of the ‘Cathedral Woods’ trail.

It appears that I have 117 pictures (at least) of the Fairy Houses of Monhegan Island! See below. I have only posted 30 above. So, I still have 87 more left. I will try and do another post soon. So much more I want to post about this island.

USS Fitzgerald Officers Likely To Face Court Martial For Negligence For ACX Crystal Collision.

by Anura Guruge

From the get go it was hard to imagine how the USS Fitzgerald, bristling with high-tech U.S. electronics, would not ‘see’ a HUGE container ship on a collision course.

Now it appears that various investigations are coming to the conclusion that the USS Fitzgerald was at fault — even leaving aside the ‘rules of the sea’ that says traffic on the right have priority.

So court martials would appear to be on the cards. Stay tuned.

USS Fitzgerald & ACX Crystal Collision — 1 Hour Time Discrepancy CHANGES Everything; Course Change After Crash!

by Anura Guruge

It now appears, per the OWNERS of ACX Crystal, that the USS Fitzgerald/ACX Crystal collision happened 50 minutes to 1 hour earlier.

That changes EVERYTHING!

It also means that the USS Fitzgerald, which was hit on the starboard side, was heading North, towards the Naval Base, and not steaming away from it!

That explains the CRAZY course change.

They are saying that ACX Crystal, the container ship, turned around to see what it had hit. That is strange, BUT it appears that the ship was on autopilot.

How did the two ships separate? I can’t picture that.

Here is my LATEST map.

Map Of Where The USS Fitzgerald Was Likely To Have Been Relative To ACX Crystal At The Collision.

USS Fitzgerald ACX Crystal collision Anura Guruge

I had to have a map to try and get it straight in my head.

I could NOT find any maps that showed where the USS Fitzgerald was at the time of the collision.

We, however, know that the USS Fitzgerald was damaged on the starboard side. So, that was the side it got hit.

Based on that I made up these two maps using the underlying maps of the ACX Crystal’s path.

I could be wrong and way off base! So, this is just my stab at it.

Original map I posted in my 1st post on the USS Fitzgerald.

The above map, from the BBC, really highlights the inexplicable course change by the 730′ Filipino-flagged container ship ACX Crystal.

It doubles back on itself not once, BUT twice! And that was when the collision occurred, during this v. strange U-turn maneuver. What was it trying to do? Very suspicious.

But, that said the USS Fitzgerald should not have seen it all — visually and on radar, not to mention the ‘Collision Avoidance System‘ (CAS) that all modern ships have.

This article in Wired is worth glancing at:
