July 22, 2016, Has Come & Gone And Still NO Sign Of The Promised Pentax K-70.

by Anura Guruge

The highly promising and v. attractively priced
Pentax K-70, when announced,
was said to be available as July 15, 2016.

Well it wasn’t.

Then there was talk that it will ship
as of July 22, 2016.

Well July 22, 2016 has come and gone
the K-70 is still not be found!

Very strange.

Today, July 15, 2016, When Availability For Pentax K-70 Was To Be Announced, Confusion Reigns.

by Anura Guruge

Today, July 15, 2016, was said to be when Ricoh
was said to announce the availability of the
rather impressive, and competitively priced,
Pentax K-70.

There are claims that it will start shipping
a week from today, i.e., July 22, 2016.

However, Amazon, this morning started
saying “Out of Stock”.

Ideally they should have said
“Available as of July 22, 2016”.

Possible Game-Changer Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mk. II Delayed — Good For Fuji.

by Anura Guruge

This delay is a crying shame because this, despite being a Micro Four Thirds, is, on paper, one heck of a camera — even possible stiff competition for the Fuji X-T2 due to be announced next week.

I had already WARNED that companies relying on Sony sensors could start facing delays. This is such a shame. Pity there aren’t more sensor makers around.

This delay is indeed good news for Fuji and Panasonic — possibly even Pentax (with its Pentax K-70). Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mk. II promises to be a game-changer — but Q1 2917 is a LONG WAY away. Pity. Shame.

Is 2016 The ‘Year of Pentax’ With The Impressive Pentax K-70 & Now ‘Award-Winning’, Full-Frame Pentax K-1?

This is quite the coup for Pentax to beat out both Canon and Nikon in ‘under $2,000’ full-frames. Whereas the Sony A7 II is a mirrorless the Pentax K-1 is a bona fide DSLR.

pentax2016

2016 quite the year for Pentax. Two cameras so far — both getting rave reviews. Very competitive pricing too.

The Pentax K-70, as I have already raved about, is impressive. And then there is the full-frame, DSLR K-1 that is pushing the likes of the venerable Canon EOS 6DNikon D610 onto the sideline. The K-1 has really got me thinking whether I should cease with all compromises and just go full-frame! Wow. Just to get me thinking full-frame was quite a feat. So Pentax definitely deserves more due diligence and scrutiny in 2016 than ever before — though the Pentax K-3 (2013) even before the Pentax K-3 II (2015) was always a DSLR to be reckoned with.

Interesting that Rioch made this ‘User Manual‘ available the day they announced the Pentax K-70 but did not specify when the camera will be available!

Adorama, for one, has the price right. Click to ENLARGE. From Adorama.com.

This would appear to be a ‘Fat Finger‘ problem. They have put the $899.95 price for the KIT against the body. And that appears to have propagated throughout, with the kit being $250 more — as it is supposed to be.

I spoke with an Amazon Rep. just now. Yes, it is possible to speak with Amazon Reps with no hold-time. I do so often. SMILE. I reported the problem and using my persuasive skills even managed to secure myself a small monetary reward for doing so — though Amazon does NOT have a policy for rewarding those that help them keep their product listings kosher. I am happy. Can’t stop smiling. SMILE.

The New Pentax K-70 Is Not A Fuji X-T2 But It Is A Temptation.

The ‘New Camera’ that I read religiously every morning and every night has been promoting the Pentax K-70 for the last few days. It not for their incessant coverage I might have missed it altogether given that I am trying hard to be ‘ALL Fuji’. The “New Camera” Website is at: thenewcamera.com. Click to ENLARGE image and read here.

Oscar Wilde and I are one when it comes to this sentiment: “The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it… I can resist everything but temptation.” Temptation has been the greatest source of pleasure as well as the bane of my life — though I have always maintained, very truthfully, that I only succumbed, at best, to 10% of the temptation that came my way. When I was young, which (alas) was a long time ago, my temptations were mainly carnal. In my old age, having forgone my love of photography for 30 years because I was too busy with my career, the only temptations that stir me tend to be cameras! I am NOT sure whether I should be happy or sad about that — though I do realize that lusting after cameras, irrespective of how expensive they are, is still cheaper for me that lusting our my old temptations.

So, that is how the Pentax K-70 came into my life, with a resounding bang, yesterday.

A year ago I was convinced that the Pentax K-3 was going to be, as of September 2015, my MAIN camera. Well a lot of water and cameras have flown ‘under that bridge’, so to speak, in the last 9 months: Sony a77 II, Panasonic Lumix FZ1000, Sony RX100 II, Panasonic Lumix LX100 etc. etc. SMILE. Temptation. For I this is NOTHING!

These days, next to the U.K. “Daily Mail“, which I read, ‘cover-to-cover’, every morning (as I did when I lived in the U.K.), the only other publication that I do not miss is the “new camera“. They, over the last 3 days, have been shamelessly plugging the Pentax K-70. Eventually I took some notice.

WOW!

The Pentax K-70 really could be the camera for me!

Did I just say that. Isn’t the Fuji X-T2 THE DREAM CAMERA build to my exact specs?

As you might know I take a lot of pictures, every day — most of them outdoors. The ideal camera for me would be a very rugged one, WEATHER SEALED and able to work in New Hampshire’s below freezing winters.

The K-70 is for all-weather outdoor use, up to 14°F (10°C) in cold climes. That is still 9°F outside MY range of operation in that I will run in 5°F weather.

I will HAVE to monitor the K-70. There are claims that it’s auto-focus (AF) is very good and it’s image quality is exceptional. And then there is the ISO above 51,210. That I would like! So stay TUNED.

I might still surprise myself. As I saw in a forum, the K-70 could be as good as the Fuji X-T2 at 1/3rd the price! Yikes.
