Barack Obama’s Inspirational Speech On “Mandela Centenary” In South Africa.

by Anura Guruge

Short, abridged ‘5-minute‘ version from NBC News.

Longer ’90-minute’ version also from NBC News.

This is quite the speech. You really should try and listen to at least a part of it. So, inspirational.

The GREAT Nelson Mandela, whom Obama referred to as a ‘Giant’, would have been both proud and happy with this speech. They liked and respected each other. Can YOU imagine what Nelson would make of Donald Trump?

Though he and I had a few major disagreements (and even some blowouts) over ‘Obamacare‘, I have always liked the man and enjoyed watching him speak. (And, yes, I did campaign for him, like a black, going door-to-door, three times.)

It is so refreshing to see Obama SMILE and look happy when he speaks. Trump looks like he is in urgent need of Extra-Strength ‘Preparation H‘.

Obama has a tremendous sense of humor. Listen to the opening.

The South African audience, ALAS, totally misses one of his BEST punchlines. He talks about it being cold in South Africa and how he is wearing long johns. Then, he says, deadpan: “You know I was born in Hawaii“. They didn’t get it.

Great speech. Tremendous for “Mandela Day”.

Two GREAT men. What an honor and pleasure.

We went to a Drum Ensemble at the Dartmouth earlier this year. As with all things at the Hopkins it was GOOD. Very good. We were so glad we went.

We would go to this in a heartbeat though our Saturdays are now shot because Teischan has her Nutcracker rehearsals.

But, I would definitely urge you to consider. The price can’t be bettered. Enjoy. Thanks, Hopkins.

We will be there TWICE in December.

The Hopkins Center 2013/2014 Program Preview On July 18, 2013. It Was Entertaining & Educational. Glad We Went.

Margaret Lawrence, director of programming at the Hopkins Center for the Arts,

Margaret Lawrence

This multimedia presentation preview really brought the Hopkins’ published program vividly to life – just like a movie trailer for the upcoming season.

It was very well done by Margaret Lawrence, the Director of Programming for The Hop. She was impressive. I couldn’t find too much about her on the Web but I suspect that she has some thespian in her. Her summaries of each act, done without continually looking at notes or using a teleprompter, were succinct, incisive, insightful and revealing. As some one who has done a ton of public speaking I appreciate those that can present information from memory. Well done.

I learned a lot about performers and acts that I had seen in the Program but was not familiar with.

The British “The Tiger Lillies” was one. They look like a load of (adult) fun.

The kids were suitably impressed with this DJ Trio: A Tribe Called RedSince I can pass as Navajo among Navajo (albeit when I am closer to 190 than 165) I am quite partial to this music too. It is a standing room only jam. We might go.

So this was just a start. I won’t go through all the acts in this post. I will hit them sequentially over the weeks.

But some shows are already selling out!

So, you better check the Program and do so quick.

Just when you start thinking that ‘The Hop‘ can’t possibly outdo what they have already achieved, e.g., ‘The Trocks‘ or ‘St. Matthew‘, they, effortlessly, transport you to another higher plateau.

This morning, by mail, I got the brochure for the 2013/2014 season. Now given that we are planning to go to this Thursday’s free Sneak Preview I was already somewhat familiar with what was on tap. Plus, I get regular e-mail updates.

Nonetheless I was blown away. Wow. Wow. Wow. So many great acts. So many famous performers.

I wish we had moved to the ‘Dartmouth’ area. I would live at ‘The Hop’.

But, I am so happy that we have this class of culture in New Hampshire.

Do yourself a huge favor. Call or e-mail ‘The Hop’ and ask for a brochure. It is a collectible. The kids love it. If you can get two, and the kids and use the other for images for their scrap books.
