Comet ISON prospects, quite literally, are getting brighter by the day.

It is intact and is becoming more ‘active’, i.e., spewing out more gas and dust which is what leads to the coma and tail, by the minute.

Right now it is travelling at more than 10 miles PER SECOND. That is in excess of 38,000 miles per hours. So it is getting closer to the Sun at a very fast clip.

Ameteur astronomers using backyard telescopes are capturing some amazing pictures. Check this one from October 5, from Austria (that is in Europe).

On November 2, 2013, i.e., next week, it will cross Earth’s orbit for the first time, i.e., inbound (towards Sun) crossing. Check this post for orbital diagram.

But, on that day Earth is way off to the right — 112 MILLION miles away, that is 1.2 x the Earth-Sun distance.

So, we will not be able to see Comet ISON, naked eye, on November 2.

The EARLIEST possibility for a potential glimpse is November 17 — some of this also having to do with moonlight getting in the way.

Closer to the 17th, as things become more clear, I will post an update.

Enjoy.

It might not be the ‘Comet of the Century’, but it is still on track to be one heck of a comet.

Looking good. Very promising. I am still very hopeful.

I never lost faith. I knew that the naysayers where just seeking their 15 minutes of publicity.

Should be naked eye visible by the November 10, 2013, I reckon.

Judging by my book sales curiosity is piquing if not peaking.

I am doing presentations on ISON at the Taylor Community (in Laconia) and at the Alton Public Library during the first week in November. I will post more details soon. So, if you are interested, come to one of those. Would love to see you. I am also speaking at Portsmouth Rotary, but that is after Thanksgiving.

A couple of folks, yesterday and today, were inquiring as to when Comet ISON, C/2012 S1 (ISON), will be visible over New Hampshire.

I assume they meant naked-eye visible. The comet has been visible telescopically for just over a year — with ~9 week hiatus between May – July when the glare of the Sun was between us and the comet.

It won’t be naked eye visible, even if you have exceptional eyesight till later this month, i.e., October. Early November is more promising. To start with it might just be visible at dawn. After perihelion, assuming it survives its very close sungrazing passage, it should be visible, vividly, throughout the night during December — with luck.

On September 2, 2013, with 2 days left of my 59th year, I finally managed to achieve everything I wanted to do in terms of Comet ISON, C/2012 S1 (ISON), and comets in general.

I wrote and published 4 books, in both print and eBook form.

I started work on ISON, straight out of the blue, as soon as I read about it, on Thursday, December 29, 2013. Deanna forwarded me an e-mail about the comet that she had received from a cousin. That was the first that I heard of ISON.

The next 247 days were spent working on ISON, albeit with the 6 weeks distraction with the papal transition — during which I cranked out another 5 books, but only one of those in print, the other four as eBooks.

It was a lot of work but fun too. Comets are intriguing. I really enjoyed getting to know them. Yes, I will follow comets with much more ardor in the future.

But, for now I am done with comets (though I am sure I will have to update the comet books for typos).

Going to go back to popes for awhile and also look at other ideas. Also a lot of things around here that I need to catch up on.

This was the first Comet ISON book I published, as an eBook,
in April of this year.

At that point I said I will try and get it out as a paperback closer
to the time of the comet’s ETA.

That I have now done.

All 4 of my comets books are now available both in paperback
and eBook form.

Check the sidebar >>>>.

Second paperback I published in the month of August
and the fifth overall in 2013.

Putting this into paperback was a fair amount of work.
In future I think I am going to do the paperback versions first.
Converting from tightly formatted paperback form to
no-format, free-flowing eBook form is easier than the
other way around. But, with the ISON books,
with the comet still hurtling towards us
I wanted to get the eBooks out ASAP.

Well it is done.

Since I am a glutton for punishment I will update the ISON Quick Reference over the next few days.

Then I am done with ISON and astronomy for awhile.

Back to popes. I have promised a lot of folks that I will do
another pope book.
