Canyon de Chelly First Ruin horseback Anura Guruge

It is called the ‘First Ruin‘ because it is the first major ruin you encounter when you enter the Canyon, at floor level. It takes about an hour to get there on horseback. This was us on horseback. We waited for the jeep to drive away before getting closer.

You see a LOT of horses in and around the Canyon. Many are feral. Others belong to the local Navajo. In some cases what looks like feral horses are but neglected ones! This year’s drought has done a job on all the horses, other than the few in horse riding camps. Water is a big problem. These two were on the main North Rim road, around Del Muerto.
