Presidential Inauguration Days Should Be Public (Ideally Paid) Holidays.

by Anura Guruge

I had NOT really thought about this till today. We all watched about an hour of it, LIVE, from around 11:30am onwards. So, saw the swearing ins, readings & performances. It was uplifting & inspirational. Made sure that the 14-year old saw it. She is remote-school & she didn’t have any classes around that time. I asked her if the teachers had mentioned about watching the inauguration. NO.

I think it should be a holiday. Only happens every 4-years.

When things have settled down I will write to President Biden & my good senators. Get a feeling that Biden might warm to the idea. I am sure he will feature again, as the President, at the next inaugural. SMILE.

Last Time Christmas Was On A Friday, As In 2020 — Was In 2015.

by Anura Guruge

There would have been one in 2004
IF NOT for it having been a Leap Year.
Christmas, per the name ‘LEAP’,
jumped over Friday & took place on Saturday.

Last time we had Christmas, i.e., December 25th, on a Friday was in 2015 — 5-years ago.

6-year gaps are common. The cycle as to when the same date falls on a given day (e.g., Monday) goes in 6-5-6-11 cycle. You can see that in the image above — as to when Christmas has fallen on a Wednesday.

This 6-5-6-11 cycle has all to do with leap years. You can see that in the 2nd figure above.

The 5-year gap comes about when we have had TWO leap years, e.g., 1996 & 2000. In each case we LEAPT over a day (which is why we call it a Leap Year, i.e., because we leap over a day, in the calendar). Because of the two leap years, the gap was only 5-days. Then, between 2000 and 2006 there was only ONE leap year. So we only leapt over one-day. The gap was thus 6.

Next year, i.e., 2021, it falls on a Saturday — BUT the Friday, Christmas Eve will be a holiday.

Happy Sinhalese “Old Year” 2020 — April 13.

by Anura Guruge

Come on. It makes sense. It is the day BEFORE the ‘New Year‘. So, it is the ‘Old Year‘. Well, we can be perverse.

Yes, New Year’s EVE would make more sense.

But, unlike an ‘Eve’ this is full-day, FULL holiday.

National Holiday, April 13 & April 14. We like our holidays.

I, alas, do NOT celebrate the Sinhalese New Year — other than on the Web.

My U.S. family is totally oblivious and has NO interest in learning, let alone observing. IF I did say ‘Presents’ they may be more motivated.

It was my beloved grandmother’s birthday. So, it was always a dual celebration. She was the one that brought me up.

So, HAPPY “Old Year” 2020.

A Sad End To A 27-Year Old Christmas Tradition — No More Legos Under The Tree.

by Anura Guruge

Last Christmas Lego
— ‘Ship in a Bottle’ —

2018

Recent Christmas Legos
from just the last 5 years.

There are built Lego sets all over the house.

No, it wasn’t an oversight or accident. I had been very (and painfully) aware of it for over a month! I knew that I was not getting any Legos for Christmas — for the first time in 27-years!

Of course I thought about getting one just to keep the tradition alive. But, last year, Teischan (13) was quite emphatic that she was ONLY building the Lego — a very cute ‘Ship in a Bottle’ — to please I. So, I was NOT going to push my luck and get another set for her this year. I can be quite considerate when I try.

Yes, of course, I could have got one for myself. And therein lies another problem. I did that a few years ago … bought this kit (below) … for quite a pretty penny and I still haven’t built it. And NO I will not sell it or give it away. I do NOT make New Year’s resolutions BUT this coming year I am going to build this puppy. You wait and see. It will be FUN. I have a problem. It is big. Over 2′. I have no place to display it. The problems I have in life.

So, end of 27-years.

Yes, 4 kids, all of whom, at one time or another were into Lego — yes, of course, aided and abetted by I. There were stages when they genuinely loved Lego, independent of Dad, and asked for Lego. Well, they have all got older.

Yes, I thought about getting Lego for other kids and of course I have done that. But, not the same as having Lego under your own tree or in our case, trees.

Well, life goes on. In the scheme of things this is not major. Just an end of a tradition.

P.S., I still got Lego this year — the Lego

Ship in a Bottle

tradition

Christmas tradition

. She still wants that, and has already told me that I better get her the 2020 too. So, all is NOT lost.

I Created ‘Boxing Day’ & ‘Christmas’ Challenge Badges For My ‘Mates’ At ‘Garmin’ Since Some Were Having Withdrawal.

by Anura Guruge

Posted on the Facebook ‘Garmin Connect Users’ Group
— where I lurk about, more than I should.

Garmin is supposed to automatically provide such ‘challenge’ badges for going out and doing some activity on a holiday. People are accustomed to it and look forward to earning them. So, for example, they did one for ‘Thanksgiving‘.

Well, it appears, that Garmin forgot to do one for Christmas 2019. Wow. So many folks were bummed. Beside themselves. So, I created one for them and told them that only those that were on Santa’s GOOD LIST (as I was) could get the badge. Folks appreciated my efforts.

Well, quite a few Garmin users are from the GREAT British Commonwealth. So, I made them a ‘Boxing Day‘ badge as well.

We had fun.

Enjoy. Happy Boxing Day.

I am off to watch the highlights of TWO Boxing Day Test matches. Lucky I.

Last Time Christmas Was On A Wednesday, As In 2019 — Was In 2013.

Note how Leap Years break
up the sequence — hence the
name ‘Leap’, since days leap ahead.

Fidelity Investments: FINALLY An Admitted ERROR In Their Cash Balance Accounting!

by Anura Guruge

I have long suspected that Fidelity’s much vaunted computer system is not as infallible as they like to claim. As someone who uses it daily, multiple times a day, I have, over the years encountered various vagaries. But, when I call up, they (i.e., Fidelity) always have an explanation.

Not so TODAY. Caught them with their pants down. Very exposed.

My balances did NOT add up. I kind of know what they are (at any given time) and what was being shown just did NOT compute. It also was not inline with what they were showing on my ‘Positions’ page.

So, I called. As always their first reaction is to gently humor you and show that they are right and you are wrong.

Not so today. He tried …. then he was stumped. It did NOT add up. You could see it clear as day. He started blathering … he had to call me back.

He did.

IT WAS AN ERROR in their system!

A few others had called too.

Had to do with today being a HOLIDAY though the stock market is open. But, option trades from last Friday are not being reconciled today because the option markets (most likely in Chicago) are closed. Hence, the error. But, it should not have happened.

They were suitably embarrassed and chastened. I finally caught them.

Ha, Ha, Ha.

Why Would Trump Tweet About DACA On Easter — A Very Holy Day For Mexicans.

by Anura Guruge

Easter!

Come on! It is a HOLIDAY — a very holy day for some.

Why bring this up when folks are celebrating a HOLIDAY.

And he then goes to church — after those two tweets — and people applaud. What a country.

This was very unbecoming even by his standards.

You have to show some respect and feelings.

I was utterly disgusted. This was Easter.

Oh, dear. What have we sunk too.

Wishing YOU A Very Happy “Boxing Day 2017”.

by Anura Guruge

It distresses me, greatly, each year, that they do not understand, let alone celebrate, Boxing Day. It must have been celebrated at some stage in the past. Shame it did not endure.

It is, of course, celebrated in Canada — where it is an official holiday (as it should be).

Yes, a wonderful, endearing and enduring British Commonwealth tradition.

I still celebrate it in my heart and in my case, everyday is A HOLIDAY.

But, I started watching the Boxing Day Test, from Melbourne, at 11pm on Christmas Day.

So, HAPPY BOXING DAY, 2017.
