Just Baffles I That People Still Do NOT Get ‘Memorial Day’ — & That Includes Trump.
The above was my post from LAST year. I reminded folks that ‘Memorial Day‘ is NOT a happy holiday. It is a day for commemoration, reflection, respect & humility.
I, as invariably happens each year, have been beside myself with people just NOT getting what ‘Memorial Day’ is all about.
It is ‘Memorial Day’. NOT “Veteran’s Day“. There is a HUGE difference.
But, if Trump is confused ….

Memorial Day 2020 — Early, As In May 25, But Not Unusual.
Prior to 1971, it was called ‘Decoration Day’ & always held on May 31st, irrespective of what day of the week it was.
As of 1971 it became ‘Memorial Day‘ & would be held on the LAST Monday of May.
Last Monday of May can fall between the 25th & 31st.
So, while May 25th may seem early — and it is (in that it is THE earliest it can now be) — it is not uncommon.
We had Memorial Day on May 25th just 5-years ago, in 2015. You can’t remember that?
And it was 6-years prior to that. Prior that that we had an 11-year gap.
Memorial Day falling on the 25th goes in those 5-6-11 year cycles. That is the same for all these types of fixed day events. 11-year gaps come about due to Leap Years.
We will have Memorial Day again on May 25th in 6-years time. Don’t forget.

Have A Thoughtful, Memorable 2019 Memorial Day (But Calling It “Happy” Is Tacky).
Memorial Day, a U.S. Federal Holiday (on the last Monday of May), is for remembering all the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. armed forces.
As such ‘Happy’ might not be the best greetings for this holiday since we are honoring those departed. ‘Reflective‘ may be the best sentiment.
Just a thought.

Sri Lankan Archbishop Emeritus, Oswald Gomis’ 2017 Christmas Greetings.
As with posting the Catholic Press Photo, “Christmas Card,” posting Archbishop Oswald Gomis‘ Christmas card is an annual, honored and cherished privilege.
He has been a good and valued friend for many years.
He and my adoptive father were roughly contemporaneous and firm friends though on many issues related to religion they were on opposite sides. But, that was the beauty and magic of WHAT WAS Ceylon in the 1950s and 1960s. Folks were still friends, relatives and neighbors irrespective of religion.
Father Gomis is a wonderful human being. And to I, that is all that matters. He is now 85-years old.
Enjoy.
Thank YOU.
Merry Christmas.
Over the last few years he has been using the ‘+’ in front of his name.
That is not a plus sign. It is meant to be a CROSS. It is meant to connote a title assumed by clergy in the medieval times — that of a SINNER. So, the ‘+’ indicates that the Archbishop is signing himself, out of HUMILITY, as a ‘sinner’.

Please Join Me In Celebrating The Wonderful Holiday Of ‘Saturnalia’ — The Precursor To Christmas.
IF you are fortunate enough to be a Born-Again, Reformed Heathen, as am I, Saturnalia & Dies Natalis Solis Invicti are very important & significant holidays.
Saturnalia is a holiday where ALL conventions are expected to be thrown out of the window. It is a holiday to be enjoyed with gusto.
So, I wish you, from the bottom of my very pagan heart a rollicking, merry, joyous, licentious Saturnalia (December 17 – 23) & Dies Natalis Solis (December 25).
Merry Christmas TOO! I don’t miss that either. And Happy Chanukah (Hanukkah).
P.S., This painting, kind of synonymous with Saturnalia, is by French artist, William Adolphe Bouguereau (William Bouguereau) (1825-1905) and is titled ‘La Jeunesse de Bacchus‘ (The Youth of Bacchus). Bacchus/Dionysus, my IDOL, the God of the vine, grape harvest, winemaking, wine, ritual madness, religious ecstasy and theatre.
