Notre Dame Fire: I Sure Hope It Was But A Tragic Accident — BUT, Where The Heck Was God?

by Anura Guruge

First and foremost, I sure hope that it is nothing more than a tragic accident.

I hate to even think that ….

Yes, yes, yes. I know all about ‘Free Will‘ and how God does not micromanage what happens on Earth. I am an expert on that.

But, where the heck was God?

This is why I am an unbeliever and always have been. Also, why I refuse to pray — to anybody.

If, God or the Virgin Mary will not intercede to save Notre Dame it is unlikely that they will jump to my aid when I bust a knee.

One other thing.

The Paris fire department had NO CONTINGENCY plans for this?

Jesus. That seems irresponsible and incompetent — when for the lovely French.

As some of you know I love cathedrals — albeit, I am shamelessly biased towards the beautiful British Cathedrals.

That said, I am quite partial to Notre Dame. I have visited it MANY times. Remember I lived in Paris for 1-year, and my parents lived there for over 15-years.

This is a shame.

NO we can’t rebuild it to its original glory. We no longer have the skills.

Redoing in glass, which I know the French will look at, is NOT going to cut it.

A sad day for us. Kind of like a 9/11 — though without, luckily, the loss of life.

Virgin Mary — The Patron Saint Of #MeToo.

Click to access this post from last year where I talk about how God had to have violated Free Will when he put Jesus on Earth.

A friend of mine by sending me a detailed exposition of ‘Determinism’ got me thinking about ‘Free Will’ again.

As I talked about in this post, I firmly believe that God violated ‘Free Will’ when he gave ‘us’ Jesus without ever consulting any of us — NOT even (poor) Mary.

And that got me thinking. Poor Mary. She had NO choice. She was NOT given a chance to say ‘No’!

Wow. How times have changed?

But, we don’t bring this up. It should be.

But, I am an equal opportunity skeptic. I was brought up a DEVOUT Buddhist by my adoptive parents — my adoptive father a big muckety-muck in International Buddhist circles.

As a child I was brought up to think what an amazing person Gautama Buddha was. Then, in my 40s, as a DIVORCED dad of two, I suddenly realized something. Gautama Buddha was a Deadbeat Dad! He abandoned his 1-day old son and snuck away at night with a male servant. They never heard from him for 7-years. Classic Deadbeat Dad. Buddhists get very mad at me when I bring this up. But, it has to be said.

So ….

Why do we cut slack?

And that then brings up …

Q.E.D., As To Why I Do Not Believe In Prayer — Irrespective Of Religion & Culture.

by Anura Guruge

church

From the “Chicago Tribune”. Happened December 10, 2016. Google for much more.

Q.E.D. = “quod erat demonstrandum”, in Latin, of course, which denotes “that which was to be demonstrated”.

I fully understand and appreciate those who justify all of these hard-to-fathom calamities by insisting: God does not interfere, God does not micromanage or ‘Free Will‘.

I am happy to buy that.

But, what I do not understand is why these same people PRAY and advocate prayer.

IF God does not interfere, micromanage or go against the “Free Will” granted to humans, why pray? That is asking God to interfere?

Do NOT get it?

Which is why I do NOT pray, haven’t for over 45 years, and do NOT believe in prayer.

IF anybody should believe in prayer it should be I. As I have talked about many times before my adopted mother was a much revered ‘queen of prayer’. She prayed all the time! And the beauty of her prayers were that they were cross-religion. She prayer to multiple deities across religions and she picked the BEST one for her given situation. It was a science with her. Up until my early teens, I like so many others, were in awe of her powers of prayer. Then I started to get skeptical. And eventually I saw the light.

As is my wont, I don’t have anything against those that pray. Each to their own. I just don’t get it.

Pax.

This 62% landslide in Catholic-Ireland is an embarrassment and blow to the Pope and the Church.

You have to ask: “What was God thinking?”

Yes, yes, I know all that stuff about Free Will and that God does not micromanage. But when you are talking about an entire Catholic nation it is hardly micromanagement. It is a MACRO event that affects the whole Church. The way I read this — God was in favor.

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin’s statement, shown above, makes it very clear that Pope Francis, despite his infamous ‘who am I to judge‘ statement, is vehemently against gay marriage. Francis, contrary to what he pronounces, is a very-correct conservative, orthodox Jesuit at heart. He may claim not to judge but he is 100% behind the teachings of the Church that homosexuality is a sin! That is the dilemma of — and with — this pope. What he says in public is NOT what he actually believes in. It is a strange kind of papal lip service.

This Irish referendum will be a challenge. He will have to comment on it — this coming week. Lets wait to see what he has to say. God’s Will etc.

I found this beyond intriguing.

Catholics have always told me that you can’t in any way or form ‘tie’ God to any disasters — natural or man-made.

They would say stuff like ‘God doesn’t micro-manage‘ and the inevitable ‘Free Will‘ — though how Free Will has anything to do with a natural disaster defeats me.

I applaud this pope for this.

Right On.

WHY?

WHY?

Let me know.

This pope really is a revelation.

Now lets not forget the one of the pope’s official titles is that he is Christ’s Vicar On Earth.

‘Vicar’ means representative.

So if anybody can get an answer to this WHY it has to be the pope.

This is so great.

WHY haven’t we had a pope like this before?

Not good. Could give the Church a bad name.

I checked to see how prevalent Hepatitis, a notifiable disease over there, actually is in Italy.

These two bishops supposedly caught it, in Rome, in September. They don’t, of course, have the numbers for that period — which was only last month.

But here are the numbers for Jan. – May 2013. 352 cases. So, I guess, and I could be wrong, you have to be damn unlikely to catch it — especially if you are a Catholic Bishop, a direct successor of the Apostles. What chances do mere mortals have if Bishops go around catching hepatitis in Rome.

Though my ongoing work on papal history is now widely followed and accepted, I, never having been a Christian (adopted by a prominent Sri Lankan Buddhist family and then giving up on anything spiritual altogether), am often all at sea when it comes to Christian theology — despite having a number of scholars, including Fr. Anthony Churchill of the U.K., a Licentiate of Sacred Theology (S.T.L.) from Rome no less, at hand to answer my questions and TRY to steer me in the right direction (which is never an easy task).

I saw this story on CNN yesterday. It has been widely reported all over the place since. That he supposedly caught it from contaminated food in good ol’ (and ol’ indeed) Italy has me raising my eyebrows. Of course, possible. You would normally associate hepatitis from food from a Third World country — but then again, I know that there will be folks in Europe who will gleefully claim that Italy is now a Third World country. Shame.

But, this is where I get so confused and befuddled. What did these poor folks in N.D. do to deserve this? They go to Mass and now they have all this anguish. I haven’t pinged any of my theology experts as yet BUT I have a fairly good idea of the two themes that I will get back from them: ‘no micro-management’ and ‘free will’. I can understand the ‘no micro-management’ part — just look at Obama and ObamaCare (and yes, I do appreciate that Obama thinks he is God too — which is a problem). But, the ‘free will’. Don’t get it. These are the dilemmas that occupy my mind most of the day — precluding me from getting anything productive done or earning any money.
