Trump Lied To You That 2018 Tax Return Was Going To Be Simpler, Easier & Postcard-Sized.

All forms from IRS.gov.

OK, it is true that SOME of the forms are the size of EXTRA-LARGE postcards BUT all they have done is split the forms into MULTIPLE ‘postcard’ size Schedules.

It is stupid.

The basic ‘front page’ 1040 is split into two just to give the appearance that is SMALLER and akin to an EXTRA-LARGE postcard. But, it takes TWO of these EXTRA-LARGE postcards to do the very basics.

And then we have 6 NEW Schedules, viz. 1 to 6, in ADDITION to all the old & beloved Schedules A, B, C, D etc.

Sacré bloody bleu.

These new Schedules just complicate matters.

Trust me it is not simpler or faster.

I know my way around the 1040. SMILE. I have been doing taxes, on my own, for nearly a decade. I don’t use software. I do it by hand using ‘Free File Fillable Forms’ from the IRS or just PDF versions of the forms (also from the IRS).

In the last couple of days I did two fairly involved returns — both involving Obamacare, ‘Premium Tax Credit’ Form 8962. I worked it all out and got it done. But, it was really no easier than years before. Just more involved and fiddly.

So, Trump lied to us about this. But, what is new.

IRS ‘Free File Fillable Forms’ 2019 Has Issues With Form 8962, ‘Premium Tax Credit’.

by Anura Guruge

Second year running that the usually estimable ‘free file fillable forms‘ has had problems with dreaded ‘ObamacareForm 8962. I guess it is one of the last forms they get around to tackling.

This year’s problem is crazy. Basically line 8a is dead. It doesn’t do the math and it won’t allow you to enter the value manually! I guess they had planned to make the two fields on that line 8a & 8b automatic — i.e., they would do the math. Simple enough.

8a = line 3 * line 7.

Guess they screwed up putting in the code to do that. So, it remains unpopulated.

And herein lies a fundamental problem with FFFF. If there is a way to OVERRIDE their ‘no entry’ block — I don’t know what it is.

They really should provide an OVERRIDE so that you can always modify or populate a field. Without that you are screwed.

So, I was screwed again. Also means I can’t use the FFFF electronic filing because I can’t complete all the Forms.

Luckily all 1040 Forms on IRS.GOV, this year, are fully editable online! Pretty neat. So, basically the same as FFFF.

So, I did Form 8962 and Schedule 2 online.

I, as I did last year, just mailed it in. Hate doing it, but it was the easiest for I.

IRS ‘Free File Fillable Forms’ Has An Error On Line 26 Of Form 8962, ‘Premium Tax Credit’.

by Anura Guruge

This is a ‘Do the Math’ field.

You can’t enter a value in it, or override it.

The MATH is WRONG.

On Form 8962, IF line 25 is greater than line 24, IT does NOT leave it blank!

Instead it INSISTS on entering the value of line 24 — irrespective of what is on line 25.

IT will then even enter that in the 1040 line 69 and your RETURN will be TOAST.

Yes, darkly burnt TOAST.

The e-file spots the error. So, you can’t get away with it. {Smile}

I ended up just printing my return, making the corrections by hand, and MAILING IT!

So, a heads up.

IRS Form 8962, ‘Premium Tax Credit (PTC)’ — Do NOT Roundup Your Numbers, Specially On Line 5.

by Anura Guruge

89622016

The new Form 8962, that came to be with the 2014 Tax Returns, is probably the most pernicious feature of ObamaCare, a.k.a. Affordable Care Act (ACA) — and that takes some doing.

IF you have the misfortune of having to file one you will understand. Yes, I assume many of you rely on a Tax Preparer to do your taxes, including Form 8962. I have to assume that they must charge you more for doing it because it is not an easy form. It makes all the other common forms, Schedule D or Schedule C, seems TRIVIAL in comparison.

That the INSTRUCTIONS for Form 8962 runs to 18 pages is a clue that this is convoluted and complicated.

One of the stupidest things in this form is that it does NOT like you rounding up your percentage number when you are completing Line 5. Yes, it says so in the instructions BUT that is easy to miss.

IF you round up and say put .197 instead of .196 because the number you got from the division was .19689 you will be SCREWED! I kid you not. (And I made up those numbers to just serve as an example. I am not going to tell you mine. SMILE.)

I had my Free Fillable Form Electronic Filing REJECTED by the IRS because of that ONE Line 5 rounding up! Wow.

Took me about 10 minutes to work out what they were complaining about. Then, on reading the instructions, even more carefully, so it. DO NOT ROUND. I am so used to rounding up.

To be fair to the IRS it makes a difference. It, of course, depends on your numbers BUT I was surprised that in our case that rounding came to $20 — in OUR favor. So that is why the IRS balked. They wanted me to get it right.

So heads up. IF you are doing Form 8962 be careful rounding.
