‘Heart Rate Monitors USA’ Still Offering Some Of Their Insane ‘Cyber Monday’ Deals; E.G., ‘Fitbit Versa 2’ For $129.

Some good deals here — the ‘Versa 2‘ for $129 chief among them. Best Fitbit ever and it was selling at $199 just 3-weeks ago!

They also have the venerable Garmin Fenix 5 at $299.99. That is quite the deal. I hate to think what I paid for my Fenix 5 — albeit nearly 2-years ago.

Still 8-days left before Christmas. HRM USA will get it to you within 2-days. So, you have time.

Garmin New Feature Request: Making ‘Activity Tracking’ An ON/OFF Toggle ‘Control’.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. Sent via e-mail & Twitter.

Activity Tracking‘ is how you control STEP counting. IF it is ‘OFF’ the watch will not count steps. So, this is how you avoid FAKE STEPS when your arm is moving up and down (as can happen when you are seated on a bumpy bus or operating machinery) but you are stationary. Just recently, on Facebook, there was a person complaining about this. He operates an excavator and was seeing a LOT of fake steps.

Turning ‘Activity Tracking’ is not difficult. You can do it on the watch itself within the MENU or on your phone (under DEVICES –> Activity Tracking). But, both option require some ‘work’.

Then it occurred to me that it would be much easier if ‘Activity Tracking’ ON/OFF was a CONTROL. You could keep it as your default control. Then three button pushes (on a 5-button Garmin) and you are done. It will just like turning ON/OFF the Flashlight.

It should be easy enough to implement. Plus, as with all controls you can get rid of it IF you don’t want it,

Garmin’s New ‘Swim 2’ For Pool & Open Water Swimmers — I Am Skeptical. (Sorry.)

by Anura Guruge

It BETTER be better than the Fenix 5
in Open Water
BUT it doesn’t have a gyroscope.

Click to access my post from last year. Actually I did a couple of posts on this topic.

This Garmin amused I. I do NOT consider myself a swimmer. Given that I do live in a lake community, with beach rights, I do swim ‘open water‘ in the Summer — but, I do live in New Hampshire, and this year, Summer was about 3-weeks long. (SMILE). If I am travelling, and staying at a hotel with a pool, I will swim, religiously — but I do not go swimming, in pools, other than when I am staying at a hotel (which is ~ 20 — 25 days a year).

That this ‘baby’ doesn’t have a gyroscope cracks me up.

GPS does NOT work underwater. That is why you need a gyroscope. The gyroscope is supposed to backfill data IN BETWEEN GPS reading. With the Fenix 5, with a gyroscope, this was still the challenge. The Fenix 5 did not keep up between GPS readings.

I HOPE Garmin has fixed all of the ‘open water’ issues in this — the ‘Swim 2’. As a huge Garmin fan (as well as a Garmin shareholder) I always want Garmin to WIN. Thus, though I am skeptical I am rooting for this watch to be a winner.

I did a bit of research. It, at its core, is a Garmin Forerunner 45 — with the special software adding $50 to the price. Interesting choice. It would appear that what Gramin was most concerned about was the $250 price point.

Well, I will keep an eye on this as I do with most Garmin watches. I will check the Forums.

No I am not going to get one. As I started off, I am not a swimmer.

I will be happy to share any feedback or updates you share with me. Thank you.

Garmin ‘MARQ Expedition’ Silicone Strap Is 22mm ‘Quick Fit’, BUT Is Different To Others.

by Anura Guruge

The Garmin MARQ Expedition comes standard with a $199 Italian Vacchetta leather strap. It is very nice. Too nice, in my opinion, for everyday use, especially if you, like I, are in the habit of taking showers with your Garmin still on your wrist.

Luckily, Garmin includes, for ‘FREE’, an extra black silicone rubber watch strap. It is, in theory, a 22mm Quick Fit like those for a Garmin Fenix 5.

But, the strap is very different; everything about it is different. It has a raised shoulder and a bigger clasp. There is no gap between it and the watch. I like it.

My problem — I can’t find ANY other bands like it, even in black.

I have 5 Fenix 5 bands in different colors. They fit on the MARQ. But, they look different to the black band.

So, just a heads up.

The New ‘Garmin Forums’ Are Here — Old Links Will Not Work.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access the NEW Landing Page for Garmin Forums.

If you follow the ‘Garmin Forums‘ you would have known that they have been DOWN for about a ‘week’ while they were being moved to a new — and supposedly better — platform.

They are up and running again.

However, only the TOP LEVEL ‘forums.garmin.com‘ URL is the same. So, if you had links to specific Forums, say the Fenix 5 Plus (as I did), they will NOT work. You will have to redo them — as I had to.

The Categories are a bit confusing. Why isn’t the Fenix 5 (Plus) under ‘Sports & Fitness’ — isn’t the Fenix 5 (Plus) Garmin’s premier sports watch?

Anywho … they are BACK.

I didn’t have time today to check them out. Just wanted to make sure they are back.

Hope this helps.

ActiFace“, for Garmin, has been the ONLY watch face I used on my Garmin Fenix 5 Plus over the last year. I like ‘ActiFace’. I had customized it for my preferences and it was just right.

On Thursday, while my Fenix 5 Plus was connected to ‘Garmin Express‘ I out of idle curiosity looked at what new watch faces were available at Connect IQ.

The ‘MagicDust‘ beta caught my eye. As you can see it does have a resemblance to ActiFace.

Downloaded it. No issues. Came up at once.

I have been too busy to sit down and customize it as yet. Appears that it has a TON of settings.

I like it. It has a certain quality and charm to it.

I am going to keep it on and see what I can do with it.

I will keep you posted.

Garmin Instinct might very well be the right watch for YOU, if Adrenaline plays a major role in YOUR lifestyle.

I already reviewed it in detail a few months ago. So, I am not going to rehash that.

Just wanted to make sure you knew about the new colors. The yellow and bright blue are certainly eye-catching. I do like the yellow.
