Garmin ‘MARQ Expedition’ Silicone Strap Is 22mm ‘Quick Fit’, BUT Is Different To Others.

by Anura Guruge

The Garmin MARQ Expedition comes standard with a $199 Italian Vacchetta leather strap. It is very nice. Too nice, in my opinion, for everyday use, especially if you, like I, are in the habit of taking showers with your Garmin still on your wrist.

Luckily, Garmin includes, for ‘FREE’, an extra black silicone rubber watch strap. It is, in theory, a 22mm Quick Fit like those for a Garmin Fenix 5.

But, the strap is very different; everything about it is different. It has a raised shoulder and a bigger clasp. There is no gap between it and the watch. I like it.

My problem — I can’t find ANY other bands like it, even in black.

I have 5 Fenix 5 bands in different colors. They fit on the MARQ. But, they look different to the black band.

So, just a heads up.

The New ‘Garmin Forums’ Are Here — Old Links Will Not Work.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access the NEW Landing Page for Garmin Forums.

If you follow the ‘Garmin Forums‘ you would have known that they have been DOWN for about a ‘week’ while they were being moved to a new — and supposedly better — platform.

They are up and running again.

However, only the TOP LEVEL ‘forums.garmin.com‘ URL is the same. So, if you had links to specific Forums, say the Fenix 5 Plus (as I did), they will NOT work. You will have to redo them — as I had to.

The Categories are a bit confusing. Why isn’t the Fenix 5 (Plus) under ‘Sports & Fitness’ — isn’t the Fenix 5 (Plus) Garmin’s premier sports watch?

Anywho … they are BACK.

I didn’t have time today to check them out. Just wanted to make sure they are back.

Hope this helps.

ActiFace“, for Garmin, has been the ONLY watch face I used on my Garmin Fenix 5 Plus over the last year. I like ‘ActiFace’. I had customized it for my preferences and it was just right.

On Thursday, while my Fenix 5 Plus was connected to ‘Garmin Express‘ I out of idle curiosity looked at what new watch faces were available at Connect IQ.

The ‘MagicDust‘ beta caught my eye. As you can see it does have a resemblance to ActiFace.

Downloaded it. No issues. Came up at once.

I have been too busy to sit down and customize it as yet. Appears that it has a TON of settings.

I like it. It has a certain quality and charm to it.

I am going to keep it on and see what I can do with it.

I will keep you posted.

Garmin Instinct might very well be the right watch for YOU, if Adrenaline plays a major role in YOUR lifestyle.

I already reviewed it in detail a few months ago. So, I am not going to rehash that.

Just wanted to make sure you knew about the new colors. The yellow and bright blue are certainly eye-catching. I do like the yellow.

My ‘Garmin Fenix 5 Plus’ Is Back On My Wrist After A 20-Day Flirtation With An ‘Amazfit Verge’.

by Anura Guruge

20-days ago when I strapped on a Amazfit Verge for evaluation.

The final watch face I was using on the ‘Amazfit Verge’.

I have had my Garmin Fenix 5 Plus since October 9, 2018 (i.e., for 123-days). Prior to that I owned a Garmin Fenix 5 for 158-days.

During the 123-days that I owned the Fenix 5 Plus I have taken it off and put aside on two occasions. Once, for 10-days, when I was evaluating a ‘Polar Vantage V‘ and now for 20-days when I flirted with an ‘Amazfit Verge‘. I had very different reactions to these two watches. I was glad to get rid of the ‘Polar Vantage V’. It was a very boring, insipid watch. Not so with the Verge. I like the Verge. I returned the Vantage V though I had the option of keeping it (for free). I am keeping the Verge!

The Verge still has some ways to go. Floors climbed is a joke — a very bad joke. That was the one big flaw I found, other than the Amazfit APP not working with Android 9.

The AMOLED display on the Verge is an absolute joy. I can’t wait for Garmin to start using AMOLED displays.

Well, it is still kind of nice to have my Fenix 5 Plus back on my wrist. I have got used to its feel and I do like all the widgets.

Garmin Offers Cellular Connectivity, For The 1st Time, With Vivoactive 3M Verizon.

This is BIG. Garmin ticks off another box on the ‘smartwatch‘ checklist — cellular connectivity. For now it is limited to Verizon and the Vivoactive 3M. But, we know it will soon be extended to include the Fenix 5 Plus and the Forerunner 645M and more cellular carriers.

Some of you are going to LOVE this especially if you have Verizon.

The two-way texting could be neat though not sure how practical it will be.

Those safety features could prove to be the main catch. I go running in some remote places without a phone and it would be nice to know that, if needed, I could get help using my watch.

But, from what I see, the initial push is for music download and I am skeptical about that. But, maybe Garmin got enough requests.

It is kind of pre-announced at CES 2019. Not going to be available for 8-weeks (i.e., two more months) and it is interesting that Garmin is not quoting a price on its Website. I checked around. Pricing has not been determined as yet.

I will, of course, keep you posted. Stay tuned (and you don’t need Verizon LTE for that).

Ever Stylish ‘Withings’ Joins Apple In Offering A Smartwatch With On-Demand ECG/EKG Heart Monitoring.

by Anura Guruge

It is not as fancy, nor expensive, as the Apple Watch 4, but it looks good, has fixed analog hands and claims to have a 1-year battery life. But, it is not due to be available till the second-half of 2019 and does not have built-in GPS. I am also not sure whether it does Heart Rate outside of doing an ECG. Hhhmmm.

Without GPS, any Withings is not for I. Shame. I like their look and the battery life is taking things to a whole new dimension (and I write this while charging my Garmin Fenix 5 Plus).

Appears that Withings needs FDA approval before they can release this. I will try and keep you posted.

This was announced at ‘CES 2019‘ that is just starting.
