The New Hampshire Squadron Of The “British Fleet” Was Out Again Yesterday.

by Anura Guruge

Taken by Deanna with her Olympus SZ-16.

The oldest, BUT the junior member of this squadron, the one that gets the least exposure to the Sun.

As far as I can remember this was ONLY the 2nd time the whole fleet was out during the Summer of 2016.

Kind of a shame. But knew that that would be the case when we got the Jaguar XJS. That serves as the convertible.

I really must make an effort to get the MGB out.

It also shows, possibly embarrassingly (though it doesn’t really embarrass me), that we are now a 5 car family — all 5 cars, registered, insured and ready to drive.

One of the COMMENTS against the “Daily Mail” article and this is ONE of my arguments too.

First and foremost, and I am deadly serious here, there is the SMALL matter of I!

My life is FAR FROM PERFECT but I would argue and set out to prove that I am HAPPIER, any day of the week, any day of the year, than this monk.

I am NOT joking.

He and I agree on ONE THING and that is that one can train one’s brain to be happy. So between he and I what we are DUKING it out is who has the better brain training system. I contend that I have. Why?

Because unlike this guy, and as the COMMENT above highlights, I am HAPPY leading a full, ‘normal’ life — WITH A SPOUSE & CHILDREN — and I HAVE SEX! Yes, that definitely COMES into it and the pun was very intentional. Orgasms, for both sexes, are an important factor in being truly happy.

Check this guy out. He was a recluse. Ran away from life.

He is NOT happy. He is content. There is a HUGE difference. You can be content being unhappy. Trust me you can.

And then there is the TWO-SIDED issue about how happy a Buddhist monk can really be.

One of Buddha’s fundamental teachings is that we ALL SUFFER because of our fondness to attachments — which also includes family.

IF you want to be happy without attachments GO AHEAD be my guest. I would rather be unhappy and have some attachments.

Plain and simple. This guy by a LONG CHALK is NOT the happiest man in the World. I might NOT be the happiest BUT I will sure argue and prove that I am HAPPIER than he is — any day of the week.

Simple question. Just ask him. When did he last have an orgasm with another person — ideally of the opposite sex.

It Is HARD To Credit But New England Market Basket (MA, NH, ME) Does NOT Have A Website!

It is very clear about it — it is NOT the official Website

It is easy to get fooled on the Home Page.

After my earlier post on hand sanitizers, or the lack thereof, I thought it would be easy to send the link to Market Basket through their Website.

Well that was not be the case.

When you Google ‘Market Basket‘ the above Website comes up at the top — looking very much like the bona fide site. Not so. IF you go to the ‘Contact’ tab, as I did (looking for an e-mail or a form), I found the disclaimer.

It is interesting that there are other food chains with the same name. There is also a very vicious site which comes up if you Google ‘Demoulas‘.

So I ended up having to call up the Market Basket, on Fort Eddy Road, in Concord, N.H., using the phone number that was on the receipt from our earlier shopping trip. Spoke to the assistant manager. (See update at the bottom.)

He confirmed that ‘Market Basket’ does NOT have a Website. I was amazed. Is it the last holdout when it comes to Websites. Wow.

‘New’ Market Basket — Arthur T. Demoulas PLEASE Don’t Skimp On Hand Sanitizer.

As the above listed posts would amply testify I am a HUGE fan of Market Basket and of Arthur T. Demoulas (and my association with Demoulas’, on a family basis, goes back 30 years).

My wife and kids joke that I can’t be within a 10 miles radius of the Market Basket in Concord, N.H. without finding an excuse to stop there.

I vocally supported the boycott last year and I was beyond thrilled that Arthur T. finally got total control of the chain.

So, I was bummed today that ‘they’ — and this could just be a misguided decision just at the Fort Eddy Store in Concord, N.H. — are trying to economize on public hand sanitizers!

Come on.

Yes, of course, everything has a price, Market Basket (rightly) works on thin margins and every cent makes a difference.

But, come on. Cutting back on hand sanitizers!

As they would have said at my rather exclusive Public School in London “Play the White Man”!

I was amazed. They used to have two large dispensers, of the paper kind, at each of the two entrances/exists. Today they were gone.

I went and asked a manager — or at least a guy in a red jacket. I think his name was “Sean” and he had a tag that said “22 years”. This was around 1pm, Monday, May 11, 2015. [Look it up.]

He said that they had to REMOVE the dispensers because the WIND from the entrances were drying out the napkins. They were losing 2,000 a day from the wind.

I pointed out that you can get other types of sanitizers — e.g., liquid. He didn’t even bother to respond. This guy was pompous and ignorant. Not what I had ever seen with Demoulas management. Never mind him. He can’t help it.

I just would like MORE hand sanitizers.

Yes, as is ALWAYS the case with my apparent madness there is a good reason. I get cheese ends, whenever I can, at Market Basket. I love the VARIETY. 30 shades of cheese in one shrink wrapped package. I like to start devouring the cheese even while I am at the checkout. No, I am NOT cheating them. It is already weighed and their is a label with the original price. But I like to sanitize my hands BEFORE I break into the packet.

So Arthur T. — please.

Give me back my hand sanitizers. Liquid ones will be fine.

And PLEASE talk to ‘Sean’. Some of us do KNOW what we are talking about

5pm, Monday, May 11, 2015 UPDATE.

I just spoke to an ‘Assistant Manager’ at Fort Eddy, Market Basket. Appears that the hand sanitizer policy is, indeed, handed down to them from up high. The napkin variety, supposedly, is the ONLY type they are permitted to use — least aggressive and meets OSHA standards. Well I asked him to escalate the matter.

Market Basket (as in the New England stores) does NOT have a Website! He confirmed that.

Did they botch Mandela’s embalming?

Where is Nelson Mandela’s body?
Dec. 12, 2013.

I found this last night from South Africa.

No PLANS to release Madiba pics.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was never a Saint per se.

But, he was an exemplary human being with a heart of gold and a great set of values.

Not so when it comes to his extended, splintered, multi-tier family.
Fully understand and appreciate that many went through A LOT
in the past and that some did a great deal of good for the cause.
As such they, though not all, are entitled to try and
profit as much as possible from their GREAT MAN.

But, it would be a shame if this is all but a ploy to
get big bucks for photo exclusives.

Then again, knowing South Africa’s propensity for getting this wrong —
they could very easily botched the embalming.

I am sure we will find out soon enough.

‘Thirsty Whale’, Bar Harbor, Maine — Great Family Eatery When Visiting Acadia.

This was an accidental as opposed to a serendipitous discovery — and we are sure glad that we found it.

The day before, our first day in Acadia, I was carefully perusing the excellent ‘Menu Guide‘ they have for Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island. I had picked it up at the first Visitors Center (cum Chamber of Commerce) we had stopped at — just across the bridge, as you enter the Island. I had seen the menu for a ‘pub’ with a whale’s name, and a very compelling graphic of a whale, that featured appetizers by the ‘pound’. On my low-carb diet, I sometimes just eat appetizers. So this place appealed to me. It was on Cottage Street in Bar Harbor, a main cross road off Main St. On our first night there, our first ever in Bar Harbor, we couldn’t find Cottage Street because we didn’t walk down far enough.

On our second night, driving down Main St. I did find it and pulled in. Deanna immediately spotted a sign with a whale and I assumed that this must be the place. Never occurred to me that there would be TWO ‘whale’ pubs on the same street — 5 units apart, #30 & #40. We found a legal parking spot close by (no mean feat) and ambled up to the ‘Thirsty Whale’. There was a couple with two kids standing outside. I asked them if they were waiting for a table. They said ‘yes’ but that they didn’t think it would be long. It wasn’t. They were called as we were talking. I walked in. I was greeted by a very friendly, older lady from Maine. She grabbed my arm and assured me that she will get me a table within 10 minutes. We had a table, a good table at that, within 5 minutes. She was very nice.

Bubbly, happy place. Kind of like a sports bar with some big screen TVs, but not loud or boisterous. Lots of families with kids.

I noticed that the menu did not have the appetizers that I had seen the night before. I assumed they had changed the menu. Didn’t realize that we were in a different restaurant.

Very reasonably priced drinks. Wine at $6 a glass (though I don’t know how big the glasses are because, for a change, I didn’t order my doctor’s orders, medicinal, glass of red). Instead I had a single malt, neat, for $6. That was good. I used to be a big whiskey drinker but that was the first shot I had had in over a year.

Interesting menu. They had a kid’s version of surf & turf: chicken strips and fish nuggets. Teischan had that and ate most of it.

Deanna and Devanee had lobster rolls and I did not hear any complaints — and that must mean that it was better than ‘OK’ since Deanna is the daughter of a Maine lobsterman. Devanee considers herself a lobster connoisseur.

I had the spicy shrimp corn chowder (which was lip smackingly good) with a blackened blue cheese burger (sans the bun which Devanee ate). It was GOOD. Very good.

Service was cheery, no-nonsense and fast. Prices were good.

Definitely going back.

Then when we were having our postprandial stroll we saw the OTHER whale sign. The Finback Alehouse. That was the place with appetizers by the pound. Next time we will try them.
