Went to see my latest dentist today — after having walked out of a Pittsfield dentist last month, in a huff, about not wanting my blood pressure taken.

The new dentist is a Sikh in Gilford (N.H.). [And to spare him any blushes, assuming he can blush, I will refrain from mentioning his name.]

He seems nice enough though I never got to see him per se though he came to examine my teeth! I am horizontally prone and he strides in, shakes my hand, while all the time covering his face with a sanitization mask. I guess he must be of a shy and retiring disposition. Strange. I kind of thought it was rude. I have never met the guy. So at least for the initial ‘meet-and-greet’ he could have lowered his mask. I guess they don’t teach these new dentists and doctors much about social etiquette.

But, he had a very nice. very pleasant and highly businesslike dental hygienist and 99% of my visit was with her. We kind of knew her, though this was the first time she has ever cleaned my teeth.

**********

flossing1Anyhow, this masked Sikh, who has to be fairly young, asked me, quite seriously: ‘have you been flossing your teeth all your life?’.

I will admit that I thought, right off the bat, that it was a pretty dumb question. I am even willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and take for granted that ‘by all your life’ he didn’t mean when I was 1 year old or even had baby teeth.

But, I am 60. IF he bothered to look at my chart he would have known that — given that dentist are extremely good with numbers because they seem to spend so much time working out how much they are going to make off you.

So, what he was basically asking me was whether I had been flossing for say 50 years.

50 years.

That would take us to 1964.

440661I was still in Ceylon. I am not sure whether they even floss in Sri Lanka today. We were lucky to have toothbrushes. Often we used our fingers or soft branches from trees!

This guy looks like he was born in the 1980s. But I couldn’t tell. He looked like the Lone Ranger sans the horse.

I told him point blank that HECK NO, I had not been flossing all my life …. maybe for the last 20 years.

I immediately made a mental note that I will check the history of flossing when I got home.

I just did.

Yes, yes, yes. Doctors and dentists invented flossing ‘tools’ in the late 1880s. But they also invented vibrators for calming women’s nerved around that time too.

FLOSSING ONLY BECAME POPULAR IN THE U.S. IN THE 1980s.

So let me categorically tell this masked Sikh … you may be a decent dentist (but I wouldn’t know since you didn’t have to do anything) … but you are rather naive and ill informed.

What a crazy thing to ask a 60 year old brown guy. “Have you been flossing ALL your life?”

I despair.

So how long have YOU been flossing?

Yes, I understand that Teischan, who is 8, could have answered that question in the affirmative. 52 year difference between her and her dad.

Last night was my first walk, in the evening, along ‘The Trail‘ — while Devanee was at her weekly ‘Clearlakes Chorale‘ practice. Last week, given that I had slogged up Prospect Mountain Road in the morning, I only did 1/4 of the walk — mainly because Deanna wanted me to pick up some stuff for Teischan’s birthday at ‘Rite Aid‘. Rather than drive, I walked.

Last night was an ideal evening for walking. I think it was about 35F. Perfect as far as I am concerned. Not too cold, not too hot!

So tranquil. So picturesque. The Lakes Region, at its best, while there is still ice on the lakes. Crescent Lake is melting — and melting fast.

‘The Trail’, extensively used by snowmobilers, was frozen, icy, rutted — and slushy and muddy in parts. So it was a bit heavy going. I did not want to fall and break anything because I would not hear the end of it from Deanna. Plus since there was no other soul of the trail it would have been awkward if I had to drag myself back to the road.

Provided it is not raining cats and dogs, or it isn’t one of my days off per my ‘3 days on, 1 day off’ schedule, I will be walking this route every Thursday night into June (when we have the Spring concert) and then again from September till Christmas (when we have the Christmas concert).

You should definitely try this trail. It is beautiful. If you can walk it at dusk. The lights from the houses make it magical. And it is so peaceful. Another world.

I love it.

I get back … and then I get to listen to the Chorale. They were in very fine form last night. I feel blessed.

Way to GO Belknap.

Click to access WMUR survey. As is to be expected "Coors" County is the most obese. But, come on. Not fair. They need to pack the fat up there to survive in that semi-Arctic climate. So you have to cut them slack. Why else do we call them "Coors" County. They have to stock up on beer as antifreeze for the body.

I Just Walked Out, In A Huff, From Deborah Varney, DMD, Pittsfield, N.H., Over Dentists Insisting On Taking My Blood Pressure.

I never thought that it would come to this.

I thought I had thrashed this out with my old dentist and that it was not a ‘non-negotiable’ issue.

I don’t want anybody other than a licensed nurse, a board-approved doctor or Deanna (who was an LNA for nearly a decade) taking my blood pressure. It is MY blood pressure and I, for very easily justifiable reasons, am very fussy as to who takes my pressure and HOW it is taken.

I will not have a dental hygienist trying to take MY blood pressure using a $40 automated cuff they bought off Craig’s List!

Blood pressure and blood pressure monitoring happens to be just another of the many topics that I do know something about. Doctors have been busting my chops about my blood pressure for 20 years. Given that I am a certified Type A+++++ personality, known far and wide for being passionate about many things, it is not surprising that my blood runs hot. In 1997, a very astute Indian Cardiologist, at Lakes Region, put me on a handful of high blood pressure medication for preventive reasons — though my pressure at the time was below 140/70. He, and a urologist who put me on Cardura around the same time, were BIG into preventive medication for folks like me. Thanks to these doctors and their preventive measures I have to take a large handful of pills everyday. I don’t even know how many since Deanna dispenses them for me, in a large, white plastic cup, each night. I think I take about a dozen pills every night.

With that cocktail of concoctions I tend to be fine! That I slog up hills 6-days a week, watch my diet like a crazy person and weight 161 pounds (at 5′ 9″) might help too.

I know that automated blood pressure monitors are not accurate — unless they are calibrated. Yes, I have had cardiologists calibrate my machines (and be amazed by how far out they were, out of the box).

I know, and I am living proof, that my blood pressure differs by 10 – 20 points DEPENDING on which arm the reading is taken — especially as I have a damaged bicep on my right arm from an accident involving dogs, sleds and ice.

I have uncontrollable white coat syndrome.

My cardiologist, the ever impeccable Dr. Hanlon, of Catholic Medical, understands and appreciates that. That I have had more EKGs in the last few years, than most people of my age have had sex in a year, has helped him realize that I most likely will hobble through for another few years — especially if I insist on running up hills most days of the week. So we have a deal. Deanna takes my blood pressure, first thing in the morning — when I LET HER! He, as my cardiologist, will buy Deanna’s readings. That works.

So, I am not going to have my blood pressure taken, with a machine, by a dental hygienist.

Deborah Varney wanted a showdown on this. I either get my blood pressure taken or I walk. I walked. IF I was having a procedure, I would have relented, because, in general, I am only 90% unreasonable. All I was there was for a cleaning. No shots and hopefully no bleeding.

This was never an issue with my prior dentist. I told the hygienist, upfront, long time ago: no blood pressure, NO FLOSSING my teeth! The latter has to do with human kindness. Compared to most I have good teeth. But, even with that I think it is DEMEANING for an hygienist to floss somebody else’s teeth. I am perfectly capable of flossing my own teeth and I do so diligently a few times a day! To me, getting somebody else flossing your teeth is akin to asking somebody else to wipe your butt! I can’t clean my own teeth BECAUSE I don’t have the proper ultrasonic machinery. But, I sure have everything I need to floss my teeth. So why demean a nice lady by asking her to floss my teeth.

Anyhow … I am through with Deborah Varney and her practice. She might be a very good dentist — but I will never know. I will make one observation. I only met her briefly but, and I could be very wrong, she didn’t come across as somebody that was that worried about heart health. I could be wrong on that.

A quick perusal of any of the links cited above will tell you that I was in the hunt for a new dentist — for all of us. I had had it with the practice that we had all been going to for the last 7 years or more. They are OK, but it changed hands a few years ago and I just don’t like the ‘drill to your head‘ approach of the new dentists, especially when it comes to extorting money.

Not sure how Deanna found them. I think she put out a Facebook inquiry and hear about them.

We first went there in November and Teischan’s first words when we got there, once she managed to stop gaping and gasping in sheer amazement, was: ‘did we bring the camera?’

That alone captures it all. What was the last time you went to a doctor’s or dentist where a 8 year old wanted pictures of the waiting room?

I too was gob-smacked, though I can’t determine, even yet, whether it was because I was impressed or perturbed. It is like a ‘Bears in a New Hampshire Wonderland’ theme park. They put both (dear) ‘Clark’s Trading Post‘ and ‘Squam Lakes Natural Science Center‘ when it comes to their pervasive and very cute bear motif. They even have bear stools for kids to step on in the bathroom. I used to ‘work’ (and when it comes to me that is a word that has to be used with caution and care) at ‘BestBuy‘ Concord. I can assure you that BestBuy, Concord doesn’t have as many computer and TV screens in their store as these folks have in this practice. I had to take both kids in yesterday morning for filings and I put on SPF-45 just to get some protection from the radiation from all those screens! We won’t even mention the Xbox gaming stations and whatever. If you want to see technology don’t waste gas going to BestBuy in Concord, just swing by this practice. Our last practice, 7-8 years ago, prided themselves of having the most technologically advanced dental facility in the Lakes Region. Compared to this place, the old place looks like a backstreet operation in a third-world country!

Foot-operated drill of the kind we had in Ceylon when I was growing up.

Foot-operated drill of the kind we had in Ceylon when I was growing up.

Talking of third-world countries, that whole thing bothers me … and did so, in buckets, yesterday. The technology that they use to do a kid’s filling is mind boggling. In addition to the ultra-fast drills they use infrared heating guns and this, that and the other. And I think back to when I was a poor kid growing up in Ceylon. The dentist we used was Chinese. I think his name was ‘Boozey‘ — and I know that that had nothing to do with his drinking habits, of which I have no clue. He used a foot powered drill! But, I lucked out. I didn’t need any filings when I was a child. Forget x-rays. We didn’t have any. Now they use spacers to keep baby teeth apart, to provide adequate room for the adult teeth to come in. Spacers? We had none of that and thank God (whoever she may be) NO braces. But, I have better teeth than probably 90% of today’s 20 – 40 year olds. Yes, of course, part of that is genetical, and given that multiple U.S. dentist have claimed that I have teeth like a horse, I have to assume that I must have had a horse as an ancestor at some point. That would explain a lot.

267702The bubbling water glass panels that they have are a masterful touch (though I am not sure of their therapeutic, as opposed to aesthetic, value — as is the suspended, G-gauge, train set (though the pediatrician the two older kids had in Peterborough, NH, 25 years ago had a similar suspended layout, even BIGGER). I want one of those bubbling water panels. I was checking them out yesterday. Not sure where I can put it, but my brain is on it.

The people are very nice. Though yesterday was our third trip I can’t as yet make a total determination as to how good they are. We haven’t had any problems and given that the kids have got good dental insurance we haven’t, thank God (whoever that may be), seen any of the bills. Oh, they like to use nitrous oxide, a.k.a. laughing gas. That was new. Not sure it worked. Both kids had it and they didn’t even talk funny. Deanna (who was sick with a cold and didn’t go) wanted me to take a video of Devanee on laughing gas. I didn’t bother. Devanee was just Devanee with the gas.

So ….

If you need a kid’s dentist or just want to go look at bears, bubbling water panels and high-tech go check them out. You can even play on the Xbox stations for free, if you can work out the complexity. Way beyond my limited IQ level.

dentalxrayTeischan lost a filling on one of her baby teeth.

I took her to ‘our’ dentist yesterday morning. Well after they conned me in June I decided I was NOT going back to them. Deanna has already found a new dentist, highly recommended, in Laconia, for the kids — and Teischan has her first appointment with her on Oct. 30.

But, Teischan was in pain and we couldn’t wait. So Deanna called up and got an appointment with these dentists that we have been going to for over 7 years — though the original dentist, who was quite decent, sold the practice a few years ago.

Though the nurse that did the initial examination didn’t notice it, the dentist, as soon as she came in, said that the tooth was infected and needed to come out. But, they first had to take three, yes three, X-rays, at $90 a pop! That is crazy. The damn tooth is coming out and even I know that there is an adult tooth behind it.

$410 to extract the tooth. This is crazy.

This is why our healthcare system is in such turmoil and half the adults in NH walk around with bad or missing teeth.

P.S., Gargle with peroxide twice a day. Will do wonders to your teeth and gums. Much better than using the Emmi-Dent ultasonic toothbrush. I stopped using it. Gargle with peroxide. Appears to be as good, if not better.
