Memorial Day 2020 — Early, As In May 25, But Not Unusual.

Prior to 1971, it was called ‘Decoration Day’ & always held on May 31st, irrespective of what day of the week it was.

As of 1971 it became ‘Memorial Day‘ & would be held on the LAST Monday of May.

Last Monday of May can fall between the 25th & 31st.

So, while May 25th may seem early — and it is (in that it is THE earliest it can now be) — it is not uncommon.

We had Memorial Day on May 25th just 5-years ago, in 2015. You can’t remember that?

And it was 6-years prior to that. Prior that that we had an 11-year gap.

Memorial Day falling on the 25th goes in those 5-6-11 year cycles. That is the same for all these types of fixed day events. 11-year gaps come about due to Leap Years.

We will have Memorial Day again on May 25th in 6-years time. Don’t forget.

I Hope You Can’t Get Coronavirus COVID-19 From Ticks.

by Anura Guruge

I really hope that ticks can’t spread the virus. If they can, I am SCREWED. Ticks are back in New Hampshire. Just picked a huge one off Maya. Given my long walks — in the woods — I get bitten often. So far, I have lucked out. I also think I have picked up some immunity against tick bites — I think/I hope.

But, as far as I know, I have ZERO immunity against COVID-19. So, if a tick can transmit it, I am screwed.

Now, the Red Cross is CLAIMING that the virus can’t be transmitted via blood — e.g., blood donation/transfusion. But, I doubt that they know for sure, for sure.

Yikes.

And don’t tell me to avoid getting tick bites. Impossible, unless I just stay indoors — and even then I could get one from the dogs.

I heard on the local New Hampshire news last night (i.e., on WMUR) that foliage has started ‘up North’. Well we have foliage in the Lakes Region too. This was at the Alton Rotary (Circle) today. Complete trees turning color. The temperature has dropped into the 50s°F the last three night. That will sure get the foliage going.

These were all taken in our yard. I did not venture far with my camera today — too busy with my latest book and putting up new railings on the deck. These were all taken with 10 yards of each other.

This was not far from home — on Prospect Mountain Road. I saw this ‘grouping’ on my run this morning. So, I went back in the evening and captured these two pictures. I didn’t bother with anymore.

Wow, coming back from Concord yesterday I could NOT believe the amount of foliage I was seeing. We are still in August. Yikes — in that this means the nights are going start getting cold, soon. Then the snow.

The foliage will keep on getting better and better and I will keep on posting more and more pictures. Enjoy.

The top picture was from Saturday, August 19, 2017. It got my eye during my morning run up/down Prospect Mountain (Alton) and I went out, late in the evening, to take a picture — along with what proved to be an amazing, fiery sunset.

The three leaves are from today, Sunday, August 20, 2017. I did the same run. Couldn’t believe that I was running into fallen red leaves on the ground already. I picked a few up on the way down. I had no trouble finding them.

I initially thought that this was exceptionally early. I then checked my posts from last year. I have pictures from August 24, 2016 and even one from July 31, 2016.

I will keep you posted given that this is really the HOME of New Hampshire foliage.
