My Contention.

Doesn’t matter which one is better. They are pretty close.

The DAMN Sony lens is 2.2 MORE EXPENSIVE.

I can pay 2.2 less and have the same image quality!

I read about this ‘blind test’, Nikon z7 vs. Sony a7RII, on the ‘DPReview‘ ‘Nikon Z’ forum.

Since I have a Sony a7II and plan to switch to a Nikon z6 (early next year) I was curious. The test was close enough — just a difference in resolution to my gear.

The test is in Japanese BUT, luckily, Google does an excellent job translating.

I did NOT have to do the whole test.

By the time I looked at 4 pictures I knew that my CONTENTION re. Sony was proved — BIG TIME.

My only gripe about Sony has been the prices of their lenses — especially full-frame, FE-mount lenses. They are ridiculously expensive. Yes, I could afford them BUT I would have a hard time justifying their prices. That is the reason I want to go with Nikon.

Until now, I couldn’t because Nikon didn’t make mirrorless, and I committed myself to mirrorless over 3-years ago.

The Nikon z6 is thus the ideal camera for I. Full-frame mirrorless, 5-axis In-Body Image Stabilization and affordable lenses (though I am not that convinced that the new lenses are superlative).

So, here is the CRUX of the Blind Test.

By definition, a Blind Test, compares similar offerings.

So, the image quality Nikon vs Sony was going to be CLOSE. And it is.

But, here is the kicker. The lens on the Sony is 2.2 MORE EXPENSIVE than that of the Nikon.

2.2 MORE Expensive and you can’t tell the DIFFERENCE.

Give me a break. I will have the CHEAP Nikon PLEASE.

Google Pixel 2 Best Smartphone For Stills Photographers — My Research Vindicated.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access “DPReview.com” review of the Google Pixel 2.

My take on December 27, 2017, 2-days after I got my Google Pixel 2 for Christmas. Click image to access post.

I got myself a Google Pixel 2 for Christmas.

It was the first bona fide smartphone I have owned! I did NOT, however, get it as a phone. Mobile phones leave me cold. I got the Google Pixel 2 for the CAMERA. I am fed up of not being allowed to take my Sony a6500 into events when cell phones are permitted without question. So, I got the Pixel 2 as my compact camera.

As is my wont before buying any electronics I did a TON of research in November – December 2017 before settling on the Pixel 2. Wife wanted a new phone too but she chose the Samsung Galaxy S8 and she is happy with it. The S8 takes great pictures too and its rear display is superior to the Pixel 2.

I am happy with the Pixel 2. It is effortless to use. It is fallible — but that is to be expected. But, quite often it takes a picture that you have to admire.

So, I am happy. Overall phone works well. I have only placed about 4 calls with it total and answered 2. Nobody other than the wife has the number. That helps.

Another Disturbing Post Of ‘B&H’ Supposedly Selling A Used Sony As New.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read this April 9, 2017
thread on “DPReview” Forums.

Such posts, which appear on a regular basis, always distress me.

Appears it is a widespread practice in the U.S. — and this is why the likes of Sony don’t put seals on new cameras!

I am sure that over the last 3 years I have ended up getting a used cameras as new.

This is my continuing nightmare.

Which is why of late I try to buy only from Amazon who claim to eschew this practice though there are those that claim Amazon is as guilty as others.

Just a heads up.

This appears to be a widespread problem. So be aware, very aware.

Nothing that overly surprised me in this — but then again I spend an inordinate amount of time reading about these cameras. {SMILE}

That it was rated below the Sony a6500 is fair and what I would have expected — given that I, few months ago, decided to get a Sony a6500 over the Canon M5, because just in terms of the raw specs, the a6500 was a more powerful, capable camera.

Some in the DPReview Forums have alluded that maybe this was a ‘generous’, ‘kind’ review — probably given that this is indeed THE holidays. That could be. But, I don’t think there is anything majorly to quarrel about on this review — one way or another.

Camera Manufacturers, Like Sony, Helping Retailers Sell Used Cameras As New.

by Anura Guruge

thread on “DPReview” Forums.

Click to ENLARGE and read this post here. Use link above to go to Forum thread, with two posts by I, under my name, AnuraGuruge.

This thorny but waxing issue continues to linger and persists.

Yes, it is a problem for all sides. People, including I, return cameras. Retailers and manufacturers do NOT want to lose too much money on returned cameras.

But, there has to be a better, more equitable solution.

Fuji cameras, at least when I bought my Fuji X-E2s, in May 2016, came inside a sealed bag.

But, as can be seen from the Forum posts folks still have concerns.

Sony, for a fact, do not provide ANY seals on their cameras or lenses.

This, of course, is to HELP the resellers.

At a minimum all cameras, above say $450, should come sealed, in a sealed bag inside a sealed box.

There should also be a (hard to reset) shutter actuation count that can be displayed.

Otherwise we will continue to have this problem.

The supposedly new Sony a6000, I got from Amazon, albeit from ‘Cardinal Photo‘, had a shutter actuation of 19. And I will admit that that is a strange, hard to reconcile number.

I am dreading getting the Sony a6500. What will I see in terms of shutter actuations.

Sony a6500 Gets A (V. Decent) 85% Review Score By DPReview BUT Only A Silver Award!

by Anura Guruge

of the Sony a6500.

Seems like a fair assessment.

Still image quality (IQ) & autofocus (AF) are highly rated as is “One of the best APS-C cameras at high ISO”. So all of that is good. This is encouraging too: “Still this is the most powerful and usable Sony APS-C camera to date. It can keep up on the sidelines and in the gymnasium with its DSLR competitors thanks to its excellent AF system and impressive buffer.”

From everything I have heard (and I have done a fair amount of digging on this camera) the criticism of the touchscreen is justified. Shame Sony couldn’t get this right.

The 85% score is impressive and up there with the TOP contenders.

But, it did NOT get a GOLD award — because the overall score does not necessarily correspond to the award.

The score, basically, is a technical assessment of the features and capabilities.

The award, however, is subjective and factors in ‘user friendliness’, character and appeal. And that I understand. I feel the same — and have said so. It is not a fun camera to use!

Possible Intermittent Power On Problem With Sony a65000 — Best To Keep In On ‘Airplane Mode’.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access the ‘DPReview’ Forum thread for this potential problem.

More than one person has reported this.

It could be fixed with Firmware but we are unlikely to see a Firmware update for a few months.

Keeping it in ‘Airplane Mode’ seems to be a temporary bypass. Not a problem for I. I don’t believe in using Wi-Fi on cameras. So, whenever I can, I have my cameras on this mode.
