The East Side Of The Pacific Was Spotted, For The First Time, By An European, This Day 504-Years Ago.

This was 4-days later. Vasco Núñez de Balboa conquering and taking possession of the Pacific!

There is a MISCONCEPTION as to this September 25th anniversary when it comes to the Pacific.

Of course, first and foremost, it all has to do with first European eyes. Native Americans and Asians and the Polynesians were very familiar with the Pacific going back thousands of years.

Even with that Spaniard, Vasco Núñez de Balboa was NOT the first European to see the Pacific — on September 25, 1513! He was the first to see the EASTERN side of the Pacific.

Two Portuguese explorers had ventured into the Western part of the Pacific in 1512. That part gets ‘lost in the translation’ because it does not involve the Americas.

Kind of funny, all round.

According to the lunatic fringe we are supposed to be hit by ‘Planet X’ this day — September 23, 2017. Did they realize that it was the anniversary of Neptune, the ‘Planet X‘ of its time, being discovered.

Neptune’s discovery, as I outlined it above, was pretty amazing and a testament to the cleverness of humans. Its existence was determined mathematically! That was 171-years ago. It still has me in awe.

Titan, Saturn’s Largest Moon, Was Discovered This Day 362-Years Ago; March 25, 1655.

Titan is the HUGE yellowish orb — too big to be fitted, per scale, in this diagram.

Titan is marked with the ‘T’.

So neat. Discovered ahead of Uranus — the first planet discovered with a telescope.

That Titan is the second largest Moon in the Solar System (to date) helped, Jupiter’s ‘Ganymede’, discovered 45 years earlier being the largest.

Percival Lowell, The ORIGINAL ‘Mr. Planet X’ & Pluto’s Godfather Was Born Today, 162-Years Ago; March 13, 1855.

by Anura Guruge

The Lowell Observatory, in Flagstaff, Arizona, from which Pluto was discovered was founded by Percival 14-years ahead of the discovery.

He was the original ‘Mr. Planet X‘ who was convinced that there was a 9th planet beyond Neptune.

He also believed that there had been Martians that dug an extensive network of canals on Mars — the Martian Canals!

As with the discoveries of Pluto and Uranus I talk about Percival Lowell, at length in my 2011 paperback & e-book Devanee’s Book of Dwarf Planets (which is definitely worth looking at (even if I say so myself)).
