Discover Card’s FREE ‘Credit Report Activity’ Monitoring Seems To Work.

by Anura Guruge

I like my Discover Credit Card.

I have had it since 1991, i.e., I have been a member for 27-years. During that time I do not think I have ever had a problem with them.

Something about them. They just, always, seem different — but, in a GOOD WAY without fail. They just seem so eager and happy to please.

Recently, following the criminal Equifax debacle they sent me an e-mail offering FREE social security number monitoring on credit reporting services. If they saw my ‘social’ appearing on credit report they will let me know — for free. I signed up and it was easy enough.

Today, for the first time, I got this e-mail.

I checked it. It was bona fide. An new account I had opened. So, it works. I am happy.

Barclaycard US & A Fraudulent $194 Charge From Best Buy.

by Anura Guruge

A sample image found on the Web. {SMILE}

I got a Barclaycard Mastercard in February of this year. The last thing I needed was another credit card (to the dozen or more I already had) BUT I would have been an even bigger fool than normal to turn down the generous, one-time $250 Cash Back Reward — given that the 90-day spend requirement to get that was beyond easy to meet. {SMILE}. Yes, I got the $250, as a statement credit, within six weeks and that made me happy.

Given my British antecedents I am fond of Barclays. A good British institution.

I don’t use the Barclaycard as much as I probably should — preferring instead, for reasons I am not truly sure as to why, to use my Bank of America (BofA), Fidelity or Discover.

Anywho …

I check transaction activity on all my cards, online, irrespective of the frequency of use, on a regular basis.

Last week I checked the Barclaycard account and was SURPRISED to see a PENDING charge for $194.40 from Best Buy. I certainly had not bought anything from Best Buy in a month — though it was very true that I had been browsing the Best Buy Website that week looking for a new tablet. But, I was pretty certain I had not accidently bought one. Checked my Best Buy account. Nothing, and I would NOT have bought anything outside of the account because I would have wanted my Best Buy points. Checked around. Nope, nobody in the house had bought anything from Best Buy — of late.

In reality we had only bought two things from Best Buy THIS year: the new refrigerator in early April and an Android phone (later returned) in late April. I had paid for the refrigerator on a Best Buy credit card. However, I had bought the phone using the Barclaycard and that transaction was properly listed — as was the RETURN a week later.

So this was a mystery and semi-scary.

A $194.40 charge, albeit still pending, on my card.

I called them. They answered fairly quickly.

They were SLICK and wonderful.

No hassle, no grief. Just a few questions and then it was BANG, BANG, BANG.

They cancelled my card. They voided the transaction and it was GONE — totally gone — by the next day.

FedEx delivered a new card next morning by 10am! Wow.

I am impressed. I am glad I got a Barclaycard.

But, a heads up.

This is scary. So who stole my card information — since I still had the card in my possession.

I wonder whether Barclaycard will be able to find out.

Picked Up My Nikon P900 From BestBuy, Concord, NH, On Sunday — Quite Easy.

On our way to the 5pm performance of ‘Cirque du Soleil’ “OVO”, Verizon Arena, Manchester, on Sunday, we swung by BestBuy, Concord, and picked up the Nikon P900 I had ordered by phone (with the store) yesterday.

They were not busy and there were no lines at ‘Customer Service’. Took them a few minutes to find the box but it was very smooth. There is NOTHING sealed in the box! That really upsets me. But it looks all brand new. I am charging it right. Though I got 4 spare ’01’ batteries for it, I want to start off using the Nikon supplied battery and also charge the internal clock battery. I am not in a hurry. Tomorrow will do for the first shots.

Quite a hefty camera. But it fits in my hand well. Like the weight. So far so good.

I like BestBuy — especially the Concord store. I worked there for a few months, as an Epson ‘brand ambassador’ a few years ago and loved it. Great people. But only saw two people from my time there. Buying electronics from BestBuy could be an option (despite my status as an Amazon shareholder).

I Bought A Nikon P900, From BestBuy, Just Now — But I Am Not Thrilled!

by Anura Guruge

I am FAR FROM happy. Actually I am bummed. This is NOT what I wanted to do, this is not how I wanted this to go!

The problem, basically, is that Amazon, for reasons that defeat me, do NOT have any! That explains 2 things. They were, until today, advertising the Nikon P900, $70 less than everybody else and YESTERDAY included a cryptic message that the order might take ‘a few additional days to ship’.

So that was my dilemma. I did NOT want the P900 till Thursday, i.e., September 1, 2016. I wanted a fews days decompression from having a camera. So my plan was to order it, from Amazon, on Monday. Then after I saw the “few additional days” I decided I better order it today. I go to order it and there are NO UNITS being sold/shipped by Amazon. Amazon is shipping an unit sold by somebody else; e.g., Adorama. I do NOT want a unit sold by Adorama.

At least with BestBuy I could get in-store pickup locally. That way I can check the box there. Hence the rationale.

Luckily, I was NOT planning to buy this using my Amazon Credit Card — though I have enough credit there, right now, to buy 23 of these cameras. Yep, Amazon will sell me 23 of these to me on my credit card balance.

I was going to buy in on Discover — and I did. Why? Price Match. I have a hunch that the P900 price will drop in the next 90 days. Discover says they will match that. Don’t know. Never used it. Did TRY ‘price rewind’ with Citi BUT like all Citi card benefits it was a SCAM.

The official Minor Planet Center (MPC) data for the comet she discovered: C/1847 T1.

So it perihelioned, i.e., went around the Sun (at its closest) on November 14, 1847, three weeks after it was discovered on October 26, 1847. Not like today when we can spot comets 18 months away.

Note the eccentricity. Just over 1! That is significant. That means that it was on an escape orbital path — meaning that it could leave the solar system. But, we now know that eccentricity can fall, i.e., drop below ‘1’, once a comet like this gets further out into space, i.e., beyond Jupiter. Check out my comet books.

Dish Network Now Delivers NH (Manchester) WMUR (Ch. 9) & Boston PBS WGBH (Ch. 2) in HD.

…..

..by Anura Guruge

I don’t really watch any of the local broadcast channels — occasionally suffering WMUR (Channel 9) for weather during the winter. I rely on CNN, MSNBC and CNBC for most of my news and then watch Discover, TLC, Science, Animal, BBC America, History, cricket (x3) etc. and the movie channels for entertainment (invariably all pre-recorded to avoid commercials). So, I don’t notice many changes in the local channels.

HD did not use to be available for NH’s WMUR and Boston’s (very good) PBS station WGBH (Channel 2).

I happened to be looking at the online TV schedule when I happened to notice that ALL of the local station on Dish, for NH, Channels 2, 4, 5, 7 & 9 (and possibly even 11) are now all in HD!

I was delighted.

WMUR comes in vividly, in full HD screen size. It was a joy to watch. Ditto Channel 2. Just wanted to make sure that you knew about this.

Dish is funny like that. It really does enhance it service, without much fuss, about once a year.

That we lose service when we have snow storms is frustrating — especially since I nearly drowned in snow on Monday trying to clear off the snow on our two (2) dishes. Yes, we need two dishes because of the ‘International’ cricket channels I get.
