We like getting out on the water when we are at Acadia. Last June we did a 2 hour cruise last June with “Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co.” on their “Bay King III” and that was a LOT of fun and very rewarding in that we saw a ton of ‘nature’. This year we wanted a repeat but decided to try a different outfit just to get a different angle.
We picked “Acadian Nature Cruises“, which operates out of the “Atlantic Oceanside” Hotel, on Eden Street (just down the road from where we were staying at the “Wonder View Inn“). For a start they have FREE, no-hassle parking. That was a BIGGIE. Parking for cruises that leave out of the main dock, like the “Bay King III” can be either expensive or difficult to find. We also liked their 10 am departure time. Just right for what we were looking for. It was NOT cheap. $96 for the 4 of us. But it was worth it. Slower cruise, compared to the ‘Cat’. They had a female captain. That was neat. The naturist, Carl, was good BUT I wish he hadn’t eaten so many lobster over the years.
Definitely recommend the cruise. You don’t cover as many miles as you do with the “Bay King III” but what you do cover is done with aplomb.

The “Wonder View Inn”, at 50 Eden Street, Bar Harbor, Maine, minutes from the Acadia National Park eastside Route 3 & 233 entrances will most likely, in the foreseeable future, be our base whenever we go to ‘The Park‘ — we already having made a reservation for later in the summer within 30 minutes of getting there last Saturday, June 27, 2015.
When you factor it all in, and some of the synergies that ensue, the “Wonder View Inn” is hard to beat in terms of value for money, location, views, SERVICE and overall ‘you are here to have fun‘, holiday camp atmosphere.
Yes, I am kind of sure we lucked out (but I can sure do with some luck these days). Last June I didn’t have much trouble getting a reservation in Bar Harbor, at the Cromwell Harbor Motel, for late June. So I had been lulled into a sense of complacency. This year I waited until a month ahead of our departure date to start calling. The difference between last year and this year was that last year we went mid-week. Ah! That, of course, makes all the difference when you are talking about the last weekend of June. The the ‘suite’ at the Cromwell we wanted (i.e., the one we stayed in last year) was booked. So I started dialing around. Teischan over the last 2 years has become very fussy as to where and how she will sleep when we travel. She has to have her own ‘big’ bed. She refuses to share with Devanee. So we have to find rooms that have (at least) a queen (ideally a king), another bed plus a third sleeping surface for Devanee — though to her credit she is not fussy and will sleep on a couch even if it is not a pull-out bed.
I called the “Wonder View Inn” mid-afternoon on May 26. I happened to get ‘Nate’, the HR Manager for both the “Wonder View” and the very fancy “Bluenose Inn” next door, since nobody else was picking up the calls. He was great. He understood exactly what I needed and said he had the perfect room for us — the “BIG room, with two brand new King beds and a couch, with a view — under the office”. We discovered that this room is “B3”. We got it for $99 a day (plus taxes). That was one heck of a great rate.
And it just got better and better.
>> Room was indeed huge. Plenty of space to stretch out.
>> Two new HUGE King beds which were super comfortable.
>> HUGE flat panel TV, the biggest I have ever seen in a hotel room.
>> Microwave, coffeemaker, fridge, iron and ironing board.
>> Deer outside the window.
>> View of Frenchman Bay across the trees.
>> Good coffee, hot water, orange juice and cranberry juice, in the lobby, all day & (I think) all night.
>> Decent, FREE, continental breakfast with boiled eggs and breakfast sandwiches.
>> Access (at least when we were there because their pool was not fully operational) to the ‘fancy’ HEATED pool at the adjoining “Bluenose Inn” — which is owned by the same family. Teischan and I used the pool and the very hot jacuzzi, with relish and delight, on two evenings, before dinner. Perfect way to get ready for a meal out.
>> Access to the bar and lounges at the “Bluenose Inn” (though we never got a chance to avail ourselves to this).
>> Beautiful views from the lobby area where you get breakfast and beverages. Well tended lawns.
>> Wonderfully friendly and helpful staff. WOW. Bravo. What a great bunch. Everybody is upbeat, huge smile on their faces and happy to help. It was a delight. Somebody, most likely I, left some lights on in the Jaguar XJ8. So we needed a jump start Monday morning. No problemo. “Brian” and one of the maids came rushing to our assistance. I was so impressed.
Yes, it is old and shows its age. Yes, of course, it could do with some major refurbishing and some heavy-duty cleaning. Teischan liked the room so much that she did NOT subject it to her Anthony Melchiorri, as in “Hotel Impossible”, test — as she did at the Wyndham in Philadelphia (to their chagrin). Yes, the housekeeping could be better! When housekeeping does not empty the coffeemaker filter and rinse out the coffee it always makes me cringe — but in this case I cut them slack. If you need to stay in an immaculate 3-star (or greater) hotel this is NOT for you. Try the “Bluenose Inn” next door — roughly $100+ more a night.
We are going back. We liked it. Hope you do too.

Let Me 1st However Say
1. Nicest hotel staff, ever (and as you know I am no stranger to hotels (around the World).
2. I would give the hotel 3.5 out of 5 and will DEFINITELY stay there again.
3. Great location. Right next door to the Betsy Ross House and the U.S. Mint.
4. Room & public areas bright, white and airy. Very welcoming. [Plaster work, in the room, around the outlets, must have been done by the frustrated Orangutan from the zoo.]
5. There was quite the ruckus at the “Coin’s” restaurant when we had dinner there on Saturday night and we ended up with a FREE dinner — as did the three ladies at the table next to us! Our bill was in excess of $60.
As I have mentioned before, Deanna and the kids are HUGE fans of Anthony Melchiorri and “Hotel Impossible” (and that was even before Anthony and I started Tweeting each other). I am not sure exactly how many episodes we have watched but it has to be upwards of 30. So the kids know Anthony’s drill by heart.
Deanna didn’t come with us on this trip because of her bad back. IF she had been there she would have checked the beds for bed bugs even before I had the chance to put the bags down. In the absence of Mum Teischan, 9 years old, decided that she was going to play Anthony.
Within seconds she discovered a white stain on the pillowcase on one of the pillows. While Anthony would go within inches of trying to make sure that you knew EXACTLY what caused the stain I will spare the details and leave it to your imagination. It was white. Teischan and Devanee were both immediately grossed out (in much the same way when Deanna found a used female thong at the Cromwell Harbor Motel, Bar Harbor, Maine (Acadia). Teischan was beside herself. I told her to call up reception. She was too shy/scared. But when we went down for dinner, she marched up to the reception (making sure that Dad was behind her) and told them about the stain. To their credit they sent up a brand new pillow, still in its plastic, and a fresh pillow cover, within minutes of us getting back to the room — after our free dinner.
Teischan stood up on the bed and ran her fingers over the top of the tall bed backrest and found DUST galore. Anthony would have approved of how she did it — sans white gloves. She was NOT impressed.
Now the absolute kicker.
On Sunday evening she found a Kindle Paperwhite, in a pink case, under the bedside table. It was just lying on the floor, not that far in.
That was NOT good.
How could Housekeeping miss a Kindle lying on the floor?
NO, we did NOT give it to reception.
I, using the Setting tabs, found the name of the person it was registered to. I Googled her.
I wanted to find out 2 things:
1/ When did she lose the Kindle?
2/ Did she call the Hotel and what did they say.
On Tuesday (after we got back on Monday night) I spoke with her, on the phone, at her work.
She lost the Kindle 3 weeks ago!
Yes, she had called the Hotel TWICE. They said they couldn’t find any signs of it. THAT IS BAD.
That was why I did not just hand it over to reception. I wanted to make sure the owner gets it. [Right now it is all wrapped up in two layers of bubble-wrap. I will mail it the next time one of us goes into town.]
This was BAD. Though we have a very strict procedure for checking hotel rooms for anything we may have left behind, that could have been us — especially with the kids. So the Wyndham would have just told us — SORRY, it is not in the room. That is bad.
That upsets me. As Anthony will sure point out the General Manager of this hotel needs to address some issues.
