The New Hampshire Mass J&J Vaccination Drive At The ‘NH Motor Speedway’ — I Waited 3-Hours In Line.

by Anura Guruge

I kind of expected that it would be a ‘zoo’, i.e., ‘not well organized‘, & I wasn’t far wrong.

I had a 12:20pm appointment. I drove in & got in line sharp at 12:00. (I was in Loudon at 11:45. I could have got in line earlier IF I knew that there was ‘no system’ & that it was a free-for-all.)

They directed me to one of three lanes; I happened to get ‘Lane 1’.

Then I waited & waited & waited.

Luckily they had the foresight to provide porta potties every 400-yards or so.

They did NOT put you in lane CHRONOLOGICALLY by appointment time. So, it was ‘just get in line’. After an hour there was some interaction. Most of the folks around I had 12:00 appointments. A couple 12:20 — like I. So, no prioritization. We were all lumped together.

In the end I discovered that there were not 3 BUT 6 LANES!

All of the delay — 3-hours worth — was merging those 6 lanes into one.

In my case, that happened at 3pm. 3-hours, coincidentally, since I got in line. Once it was down to 1-lane we moved quickly.

I was at the ‘pen’ within 10-minutes.

A ‘RN’ asked me the now routine COVID & vaccination stuff. They did NOT take my temperature.

An old, BUT still practising pediatrician, gave me my shot. Painless. But, then again, he told me that he thinks that over his lifetime I has done over 9-million vaccinations.

I took a stash of chocolates that I handed out. That was a hit.

I Got The Single-Dose, J&J COVID Vaccination TODAY, at 3:13pm — In New Hampshire; I Am All Set (SMILE).

by Anura Guruge

Well, well, well. I got my COVID vaccination at 3:13pm, today, at the ‘NH Motor Speedway’ Mass Vaccination Clinic.

They were only administering the newly approved, single-dose J&J vaccine. Yes, I know that it is NOT ‘the best’ — but that is OK. Being non-white it is unlikely that I would have qualified for anything else. Beggars (i.e., non-whites like I) can’t be choosers.

Funny. I did NOT see a SINGLE non-white at the whole MASS event — during my 4-hours there.

From what I saw I was the ONLY non-white — & the only one that was handing out (my appreciated) chocolates. SMILE.

It was a ZOO.

I was in the car for a total of 4-hours, including the mandatory 15-minute observation period. (Some folks were flagged for 30-minutes. Not sure why.)

My appointment was at 12:20pm.

I got my shot, from an OLD but still practicing pediatrician, at 3:13pm. So, just under 3-hours AFTER my appointment!

No pain. Did NOT feel a thing. The doctor did say, that as a pediatrician, he has done over 9 million ‘shots’ during his tenure. He was good.

No side effects. No headaches. No nausea. And no pain in the arm — at least of now. SMILE.

Alton’s Famous & Unique ‘Airport On Ice’ Busier Than Ever On Sunday, February 21, 2021.

by Anura Guruge

Taken with my Google Pixel 4 Phone.

Per my post a week ago our Alton ‘Airport On Ice‘ was back operational this year having, unusually, NOT been operational in 2020. That, however, was NOT because of COVID, but because the ice was not thick enough. Well that was last year. This year, given the rather harsh February we have had, the ice is plenty thick & strong.

Per the tradition the Airport kicked-into ‘gear’ on the Sunday closest to Valentine’s Day — which this year happened to be on THE DAY itself. So, that made it kind of special & as I said in my post there were lots of folks around, on the ice. BUT, there wasn’t many planes.

Not so today. It was as busy as I have ever seen it — maybe even busier (& I have two decades of experience with this airport). We even had traffic jams with planes having to queue up waiting. They even had take-off & landing window. They would let 3 to 5 planes land one after the other, while the planes wanting to take-off had to wait. It was like a big commercial airport at rush-hour, e.g., 5pm at O’Hare in Chicago. You can see 4 planes taxing in on the very top picture. All very cool.

The Airport will now be open till at least the end of February UNLESS we get a heatwave that makes the ice unsafe. So, we have at least another 2-weeks. I will keep you posted.

New Hampshire COVID-19 Vaccination: VAMS Is Not Working, Get A Manual Appointment Through 211 — April 16!

by Anura Guruge

Well, on February 1, 2021, I thought having to wait till March 25, i.e., 6-weeks away, to get my vaccination was unacceptable. I thought scheduling will IMPROVE over time. WRONG. DEAD WRONG.

I tried yesterday. Could NOT get any appointments. NADA. Nothing.

Today, I made two 211 calls. About 20-minutes on hold, each time, BUT they are really helpful.

After the 1st call I tried VAMS again. Could not get a SINGLE appointment. Then around 7pm today, I called 211 for the 2nd time.

He said that there are times when VAMS does NOT work. Also said that all the sites in the South, i.e., South of Concord, were FULL till May.

But, he could get me an appointment in Plymouth, Lebanon or Claremont. Plymouth is only about an hour away & it is a nice drive. So, I opted for Plymouth.

On Friday, April 16 at the ‘National Guard Recruiting Center’. 2-months out.

This is CRAZY.

All of the ‘fluff’ you hear on WMUR is just plain FAKE NEWS.

Alton’s Famous & Unique ‘Airport On Ice’ Back In Operation In 2021.

by Anura Guruge

This annual, around Valentine’s Day, ‘Airport On Ice‘, unusually, was NOT operational in 2020. NOT, however, because of COVID but because the ice was not thick enough.

Not so this year. It has been plenty cold enough — as I know, to my cost.

The runway is plowed & maintained during most of February, BUT the Valentine’s Day weekend tends to be when it is most busy. That Valentine’s was on a Sunday this year meant that there was a LOT of people on the ice — COVID notwithstanding. Most, however, wore masks. That was good.

Not that many planes. At most about 5 at any given time. I have upwards of 15. Maybe 20 in other years. But, this is NOT a normal year. Actually I have been noticing that I don’t see as many small planes about as I normally do. So much so that when I hear one I look up. Most other years I hear a few each day. Not so in 2021. I noticed that the other day when I heard one. Surprised I.

It was good to see the planes. I always make a point of trying to visit the airport at least once during its height.

Enjoy.

COVID-19 Vaccination AVAILABILITY In New Hampshire Is A Bloody Joke — A Pretty Bad One At That!

by Anura Guruge

So, as an over-65 I am now eligible to get the vaccination — & have been since January 22, 2021.

I did NOT try & register till yesterday because I was going to Iowa to pick up ‘Rowen’. So, I waited until I got back, i.e., yesterday, to register. Actually there was an e-mail asking me to register. I did.

Today, I was INVITED to pick an appointment. Well, YOU can see from above. Those were my options. Earliest was March 25, 2021. 6-weeks away.

That is a BLOODY JOKE.

Did I get an appointment. Heck NO. I am NOT going to bother. I will wait.

This is a joke. Actually it is a CRIME. What a country.

‘My’ ‘Navajo Nation’ Decimated By 940 COVID Deaths To-Date!

by Anura Guruge

There wasn’t, because they were so persecuted & hunted down, that many to begin with — and by that I am only going back 18-months or so. Yes, they don’t help themselves when it comes to their health. Obesity & alcoholism & with that diabetes is epidemic. It is very, very sad. AND now COVID.

They can’t afford to lose this many, this quickly. Many, by nature, will be ‘elders’. With them we will again lose more culture, expertise, local knowledge & wisdom.

I wonder how many ‘Canyon de Chelly‘ guides MIGHT have died. Wow. I am trying to find out. Not good.

Please, at a minimum, share a THOUGHT for them.

Traveling Across 7-States, 1,250-Miles, To Pick Up Puppy, During COVID-19, Is Challenging & Complicated.

by Anura Guruge

We take COVID & COVID precautions seriously. Three of us in this household are considered high risk — I due to my advance years. So, we don’t ‘mess around’ when it comes to COVID.

That said I am not used to having travel restrictions! I did do two road trips last year — & there were NO restrictions we encountered. So we were always in compliance.

NOT SO NOW! Yikes.

New York state & Pennsylvania have some pretty onerous restrictions — at least on paper. We have been told by hotels that we can ‘bypass’ them. We would NOT be in NY or PA for more than 24-hours. But, I have this thing about being LAW ABIDING — though, interestingly, most of the COVID restrictions are NOT laws per se.

I was going to take my 14-year old via Niagara Falls. It is one of the few places she really wants to visit. But, IF I were to comply with NY ‘rules’ it would be complicated. So, we are NOT going to mess around & VIOLATE any restrictions.

All the states allow you to DRIVE THROUGH as long as you only stop at rest stops … gas stations etc. — & are not in the state for more than 24-hours.

So, I am going to drive from NH to Ohio ‘non-stop’. 10-hour drive. I can do that. Once we get to OH we will be in compliance. So, that is good. Staying well within the restrictions.

Bit bummed about Niagara Falls. I have seen it over 30 times (minimum). C’est la vie.

2020 Christmas Revels (Cambridge, MA) Traditional ‘Thank You’ Video — To Help Us Look Forward To 2021.

by Anura Guruge

YouTube video.

I have already openly lamented, multiple times, that NOT going to ‘Christmas Revels‘, in Cambridge, was the WORST COVID-related DEPRIVATION I suffered in 2020! Think about it. Not going to restaurants, not going to Acadia, not going to Boston — missing ‘Revels’. Moreover, as my 14-year old daughter, another HUGE ‘Revels’ fan (who has been to at least 11 Revels) will attest, I was worrying about it getting cancelled way back in March! That was how early I was thinking about Christmas ‘Revels’ — & that from a man notorious for refusing to plan too far ahead. We, i.e., she & I, had even agreed that we would go to the LAST show — going to last shows something we like doing.

So, getting this video was a consolation.

Needless to say, it is VERY GOOD. Brilliant. Nice to see some familiar faces & hear some voices we know so well.

A BIT put out to see folks seated in MY SEAT in the balcony! That is supposed to be where I am. SMILE.

Watch. Enjoy. Plan for December 2021.

With COVID Still Spiking, New Travel Restrictions On Tap, I Can’t See How ‘Airbnb’ Can Prosper.

by Anura Guruge

I had the option of buying Airbnb (ABNB) stock this morning. I actually typed in the buy order … then I relented!

Just did NOT make sense to me. Our local Airbnb, up the road, is CLOSED — due to COVID. Yes, I know many are NOT as responsible, BUT, vaccine or no vaccine, we are not out of the woods when it comes to COVID. We still have at least 6-months more to GO — in the U.S. Minimum. So, I can’t see how Airbnb numbers are going to excel during that time.

So, I did NOT buy ABNB in the end. Instead, I bought AI, MORE (lots more) NIO & a bit more ETSY. SMILE.
