How To Mute A Chrome Browser Tab Playing An Annoying Video Ad.

Yes, I must APOLOGIZE that this blog can be a culprit of this too, i.e., having annoying video commercials that automatically play. But, that is NOT my doing. I would never do that. Blame WordPress.

Anywho … I found out how you can easily DISABLE this.

No. No. Na. You don’t have to go into Chrome settings and turn off plug-ins etc.

Just RIGHT CLICK on the offending tab (which alas, as in the example, could be this blog, nhlifefree.com).

4th option down will be ‘MUTE tab’ (or if you have ALREADY muted it, ‘UNMUTE tab’). Just click on that option. Works like a treat.

Rio 2016 Olympics Opening Ceremony Was Clever, Way Cool & Creative.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access short highlights package on YouTube. I assume more videos will make it to YouTube, NBC permitting, over the next 24 hours.

Impressive. We watched the first hour (with the interminable NBC commercials and drivel) and it was GOOD. I liked it.

The smaller ‘scale’ (than London & Beijing) worked. Made it more approachable and intimate. Very clever. Way cool. Bravo Brazil. You exceed my expectations (which are always quite high for modern Olympic opening ceremonies). The NBC coverage is being DVRed as I write. I can ONLY tolerate Olympics on NBC if it is taped and I can skip the commercials and the fluff.

Ironically, thanks to our Roku and the “UK TV” channel we actually watched 25 minutes of it, on BBC 1, WITHOUT commercials — and with an interesting running commentary. However, it was NOT in HD (and I am a sucker for HD).

Enjoy. As we have done in the past we will probably watch the whole opening ceremony again a few months later for the sheer nostalgia.

Not sure about the plane! I know a fair amount about early aviation history and that was new to me. SMILE.

‘Safety’ Trucks With Huge TVs On The Back Will Be A Very Bad Idea In The U.S.

As with so many of such things I learned about this from my daily, cover-to-cover reading of the ever trusty U.K. “Daily Mail“.

I think these trucks  will be a DREADFUL idea in the U.S.

Why? Well they are NOT going to be cheap to begin with. So if truckers were forced to have them they will incur some huge costs.

So, given the non-Bernie American way, how do YOU think they will get around that cost.

They will start running ADs on these TVs when it is NOT safe to pass. So if there is traffic coming the other way you will suddenly start seeing toilet roll commercials. That is scary.

So that is my concern. American enterprise (in every sense of that word) WILL find a way to run ads on these TV. That is the American way (that Bernie is trying to hijack from us). SMILE.

Can YOU Say ‘No’ To An ETF Called “FKU”, Couldn’t Resist XOOM And This Seemed Providential.

As I had said earlier I had to go shopping for stock now that I had sold the last of my Apple holdings. I don’t go shopping for stock that often. I tend to be a long term investor — to my cost, as my son (now a investing whiz) would point out. I also tend to prefer funds since I know that they have better insights into stock that I would ever have.

But, it is always fun to spend a few hours looking around.

Over the last week, given that I do wake up to CNBC ‘Squawk Box‘ in the morning, I have kept on hearing that UK is on the mend (if not ‘the rise’) and that this is a good time to get back into the U.K. I like that. I started investing, thanks to Margaret Thatcher, way back in the early 1980s when she ‘privatized’ the previously government owned ‘British Telecom’ (BT). You had to apply, by mail, for those shares which were oversubscribed to a crazy degree. Suffice to say that the lucky ones, like I, who got some shares made out like bandits. After that I bought every one of the ‘British’ institutions that were privatized and did quite well on each: British Petroleum (BP), British Airways (BA), and British Airport Authority (BAA). So, I wanted in on Britain. Was looking around for mutual funds and ETFs. Found this ETF with the symbol ‘FKU‘. Cracked me up. Was going to buy it just for the symbol! But then old age kicked in. I realized that it would be irresponsible to buy an ETF just because its symbol amused me. So I ended up buying two different ETFs and a mutual fund — for U.K. exposure.

Fidelity informed me that XOOM was doing a secondary offering. I didn’t even know that XOOM was public in the U.S.

I, and actually the whole family, LOVE the XOOM Bollywood commercials. The Willow Cricket Channel used to be jam packed with XOOM ads — and they were fun. I usually FF over commercials — but with XOOM we would REW and watch them over and over again.

Here is one of our favorites — and they also have a longer version of it.

Well, XOOM is doing well and with those commercials they will continue to flourish. Plus they are in a boom market with the ever growing base of affluent asians. So I didn’t even bother to wait for an ‘IPO‘ allocation from Fidelity.

And now what I think was a bit of serendipity. GoGo Air made a big announcement this morning (Sept. 11). I could understand the potential. I love the name. They are going to offer 60Mbps of Wi-Fi! Wow. That is 4 times more than I can get with TDS. I think I might have to move to a plane!

TEN Cricket In The U.S. (DISH & DirecTV): Had You Noticed That They Had Little Or Any Advertisers? That Had To Be A Factor.

Last night I was watching the highlights of Day 1 of an Australia vs. India Test match that I had recorded on Willow last year.

When the first State Farm commercial came on a light bulb went off in my head. I had noticed this, vaguely, with TEN Cricket, and had meant to write about it, but hadn’t because of other distractions and pressures.

TEN Cricket, at least on DISH, of ‘late’ (and I mean the last 6 months) had hardly NO advertisements! Yes, they had their regular commercial breaks but all they showed was plugs for their own programs or DISH commercials. Yes, occasionally a short ad, BUT nothing like what you get with Willow in terms of the (funny but very condescending) State Farm ads, the always compelling XOOM.com ads, MetLife, ‘Indian matrimony‘ and visitor health coverage stuff.

Who did those ads with the cute little baby elephant playing with the kids? I can’t remember. So much for the ‘stickability’ of those Ads!

So that had to be a factor. TEN had to have been suffering financially.
