We, as yet, know very little about these three, supposedly unrelated, comets that rounded the Sun fairly close together.

Given their proximity one would normally think that they were 3 fragments from the same parent comet. Current consensus, though only based on minimal study, is that they are NOT fragments. Basically unrelated. Strange, but can happen.

Very small. Went undetected until spotted, after the fact, on SOHO images.

Have NOT been given MPC designations as yet because we don’t have enough observational data.

Just a heads up.

The above two extracts from my “Comets” book tell you everything you need to know. SMILE.

NASA/ESA SOHO makes available digital images that amateurs can scan at their leisure to spot comets.

The 3,000th comet thus discovered was made in September 2015.

So just under 5-years to find another 1,000. That is 200 a year. NOT BAD.

First Comet ATLAS, Then Comet SWAN & Now C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) — A Possible Naked-Eye Comet.

Don’t get your hopes up. We have already had two duds, i.e., ATLAS & SWAN.

This one could be even more elusive. It was discovered a few days BEFORE SWAN.

It went by us once already. Though quite close to the Sun right now, it is VERY FAINT. Nowhere close to naked-eye right now.

But … a month from now. It could be a different story.

I will keep an eye on it, for you. Rest assured.

Comet C/2020 F8 (SWAN): Very Low & Barely Naked-Eye In The Night Sky, In The U.S.

So, this is where it was at 11pm tonight, i.e., Friday, May 29, 2020.

It brightness, in ‘absolute magnitude’, is DOWN to +6. That is NOT good. That is borderline naked-eye visible.

So, I am NOT expecting C/2020 F8 (SWAN), alas, to be a BIG hit. I, after the collapse of ‘ATLAS‘, was ultra-cautious. I did not want to build-up, false expectations.

But, I will keep you posted.
