I was worried that this would come to pass in May 2020 — & ALAS it did.
I checked it out. IT IS GOOD. Well worth the money to rent or even BUY.
We have to SUPPORT Revels. We need them back, LIVE, in 2021.
So, come on. Be a sport. It is Christmas.
It will cheer you UP. SMILE.
My family will testify that I had been DREADING this — i.e., NO live Cambridge Revels — for MONTHS! I just had a horrible feeling. I am crushed. Feel cheated by COVID, feel lost. Yes, I fully appreciate that in the bigger scheme of things that this is but mere bagatelle, but it is something that I truly look forward to year-to-year.
Way back, maybe as early as April, I was going around saying: “I hope Christmas Revels will not get cancelled“. Just a few few ago, my 14-year old daughter, who also likes her Revels assured me that there was plenty of time for them to get the show on stage. I knew otherwise & it has proved to be the case. I am crushed.
Truth be told the COVID-19 pandemic did not impact me much. This was the biggest & bitterest blow.
I am a bit of recluse as the best of times. Other than my mandatory daily walks (including the mile at night) I can go 5-days without ever getting in a car to go anywhere (& I do have 5-cars). I am happy to be at home & write. Plus Teischan was already been homeschooled. So, there was no change there.
Yes, I do miss going out to eat. That is a big change. I probably used to eat out at least 4-times a month. Now I haven’t even done fast food or take out in 5-months. But, it hasn’t bothered me too much. I still eat & I can always afford to lose some weight.
Vacations was another change. Normally, at a minimum, we would have gone to Acadia for a few days at the end of June. But, we have been compensating for that with our weekly, day-trips. Plus, we have something planned for later.
But, Revels. Aahhhh!
I am crushed. Teischan & I had already planned to go to the LAST showing — which used to be our custom. Same with the circus. Go for the last performance (in town). Now nothing.
Virtual does NOT cut it with I.
I understand. It would have been near impossible to have pulled it off. But, I am, nonetheless, sad.
2020 will NOT feel right without Revels.
I will always blame COVID-19 for depriving us of Revels.
The ice is too thin. It needs to be at least 12″ and they are concerned that we have sections where the ice isn’t that thick this year. I can believe that.
I have not seen any trucks on any of the local lakes this year. Yes, snowmobiles, but they are much lighter.
An abundance of caution, of course, but you can’t blame anyone for that. You really don’t want a plane going through the ice. That would be rather bad form. I couldn’t remember but it appears that we have had other years — even as recently as 2016 — when the airport was called off because of thin ice.
So, that is that. I will miss not being able to take my usual quota of pictures. Fingers crossed for next year; 2021.

Nothing surprising here. This was to be expected and I am, in reality, amazed that more celebrations have not been cancelled. Boston is a case in point. It is still a go and we have been talking about it multiple times today. Do we go or do we give it a miss. Wife, who invariably is the one more cautious, says she has no problem going. So, it is my call.
We went to an event yesterday. But, that was rather contained in terms of the number of Chinese there — though I appreciate that you only need one carrier.
I will also confess that I do not want to eat Dim Sum, at our China Pearl, if all the staff are wearing face masks. That will just be to off putting. Yes, we have been there when one or two have worn masks because they had a ‘cold’. But, being served my masked servers will seem odd. Strange.
We still have time. We can wait till the last minute.
As I said yesterday, the timing of this 2020 coronavirus outbreak could NOT have been any WORSE!
I will keep you posted.
Hampton Beach, N.H.: New Year’s Eve 2020 (i.e., December 31, 2019) Fireworks CANCELLED — Not A Joke, OFFICIAL.
I read about this YESTERDAY and didn’t believe it. Thought it was a joke.
Today, I called up the ‘Ashworth By The Sea‘ Hotel and checked. It is kosher.
Shame. I am bummed.
I think Portsmouth is still going ahead.
From Facebook also.
Wolfeboro, N.H.: New Year’s Eve 2020 (i.e., December 31, 2019) Fireworks CANCELLED — Also So NO ‘First Night’.
The fireworks, BOTH 6:30 & 8:30pm, were ‘just’ CANCELLED.
Bummer. I was checking whether it was 6pm or 6:30pm! Glad I checked.
Haven’t missed a Wolfeboro New Year’s Eve firework show in YEARS.
There has been NO ‘First Night‘ in Wolfeboro on December 31, 2019.
There was NO ‘First Night’ in 2018, 2017 or 2016!
Instead there is a ‘Last Night’ that wraps up by 9pm.

More Bad News From Nikon Might Signal A Much-Needed Re-Trenching/Consolidation Of The Digital Camera Market.
Another BAD NEWS Press Release
from Nikon on February 13, 2017.
Mobile phones with high-quality camera capability have been steadily eating into digital camera sales for the last few years.
It is finally beginning to take a heavy toll. Nikon could be the first to stumble.
Nikon currently, per DPReview, has 250 cameras on its books. That is crazy.
Canon has 278, Sony 277, Olympus 243, Fujifilm 239, Panasonic 193 and Pentax 135.
That is a total of 1,615 digital cameras from 7 camera manufacturers — at an average of 230 per vendor.
I have consistently maintained that this is too many. Each camera that you keep on your books costs money.
Nikon announced 14 new cameras in 2016 — 3 of them being the 1″ DL compacts that were cancelled yesterday.
Nikon and the others MUST cut back on new releases. We do NOT need so many variants at so many different price points.
Just a couple of good ones, at the low, medium and high bands.
The camera industry has ALREADY seen a sea change in vendors. Kodak, Polaroid and Agfa are no longer the market leaders they one were.
We have seen such dramatic shifts in leadership in the computer industry. Once famous names, now no more; e.g., NCR, Burroughs, CDC, Univac, DEC, DG, Wang, Stratus, Sun etc. etc.
The same WILL happen to these digital camera vendors. Mark my word.
Nikon, In STUNNING Volte-Face, Cancels All Three 1″ DL Compact Cameras — TURNING POINT FOR INDUSTRY!
Pertinent extract from Nikon’s
February 13, 2017 Press Release.
What the three (3) 1″ DL models were supposed to be.
Note that the DL24-85 came in black & silver models.
I am SURE that this marks an important turning point in the digital camera industry.
Increasingly capable mobile phones are usurping digital cameras — particularly the consumer, compact cameras such as this. People can’t be bothered to carry a camera when they can snap pictures with their phones.
Digital camera sales, last year, had already declined by over 30%.
So, FINALLY the Japanese camera manufacturers are tightening their belts.
Shame. I had SERIOUSLY thought about getting the Nikon DL24-85 as my compact.

That is a given.
Yes, we have to observe SOME MOURNING.

This was never in doubt in my mind.
I knew the show would go on and we were going to get there even if I had to leave 8 hours early.
Just had this e-mail from the ‘HOP’ confirming it.
The shows will happen; screw the snow. This is New Hampshire. We know how to deal with snow.
