Why Does The Stock Market React To Trump’s Tariff Threats — He ALWAYS Backs Down!

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and savor. From ‘marketwatch.com’.

Just don’t get it. The stock market did it AGAIN today. Reacted BADLY when Trump threatened China with more tariffs.

But, am I the ONLY one who has noticed. He always, but always, backs down at the last minute and kicks the can down the road.

Has done it with Canada, with Mexico, with the EU and with China.

He is all bluster and no trousers.

Just can’t understand why the market reacts. It should just ignore the threats. He has cried wolf way too many times. He is just bluffing.

The Blueberry Crisis In New Hampshire.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. This is a Google Map (Satellite view) of the hill I live on — with 3 BIG wild blueberry farms.

Click to access ‘Boston.com’ original from last Fall. Still v. applicable.

No. Nope — there is no shortage per se. Actually we are in the midst of a global GLUT of blueberries. Chile, Canada, Mexico and Peru are POURING in ‘cheap’ blueberries into the U.S.

This has resulted in blueberry prices going down since 2017. Good for the consumer.

Not good for growers, especially those in New England — New Hampshire, of course, among those hit. Plus, in New England it is wild blueberries, that grow close to the ground, as opposed to the ‘Highbush’ grown further down. Highbush is called cultivated. Wild blueberries have more antioxidants, tend to be bluer and tastier. But, they are hard to pick. That adds to their cost.

I live on the side of a hill — and in reality it should be called ‘Blueberry Hill’. We have three large wild blueberry farms on it. I run/walk by them most days.

Last year I heard rumblings that the owners of these farms were not happy. They were not making the kind of money they were used to. I then heard that a Maine company that ran one of the farms, on behalf of the owner, had pulled out. It was not economical to run the farm!

Yesterday, on my walk, I got to talk to one of the owners. He told me that the issue was the prices: ‘way down’. They are basically at break even and their cost is lower than mosts and they also sell at local farm markets where they can get retail as opposed to wholesale pricing. He was not happy. He reckons that Canada is dumping blueberries into the U.S. market.

Not good. I like having these farms around. They bring in bees to pollinate the plants. Watching that is fun.

So, this is a heads up since many people don’t appreciate what is happening. All they notice is that blueberries are plentiful at the supermarkets and that they are at a good price.

But, this, alas, is at the expense of New England farmers.

Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky) Is Going to Canada To Get An Hernia Operation.

by Anura Guruge

Search on Google News for ‘Rand Paul‘.

This is NOT a joke. This, alas, is very, very real.

A sitting U.S. Senator is going to Canada to get an hernia operation done!

The implications are horrendous. U.S. hospitals and doctors are NOT good enough. WOW.

Now remember, he is a doctor. Wow. So, he should know. WOW.

Canada? Yes, Canada?

Plus, he is not going there to get it done free or on the cheap — though it is way less expensive in Canada than here.

I really am in shock. This is not good. The last thing we need right now.

Friday, November 23, 2018, Is ‘Acadian Day’ In Louisiana — Commemorating The Arrival Of The ‘Acadians’.

by Anura Guruge

The original Acadia in 1754. Click to ENLARGE. From Wikipedia.

Yes, my beloved ‘Acadia National Park‘ is related to the Acadians but semi-indirectly. The actual ‘Acadia‘, as can be seen from the above map, was further north, in Canada. But, the notion of calling that whole NE area ‘Acadia’ persisted.

Canada has a ‘National Acadian Day’. The Day After Thanksgiving holiday is restricted to Louisiana.

Friday, April 13 at 4:34pm.

[2:04am in Sri Lanka on April 14].

Happy Sinhala New Year 2017.

The 3rd New Year of the Year for I.
But you can never have too many.

Enjoy. Rejoice.

This year, now that I know, I am also including my Sikh friends in this
with their “Vaisakhi“.

Winston Churchill & Franklin D. Roosevelt Met In Quebec This Day 73-Years Ago To Discuss Post-WW II Plans.

by Anura Guruge

 Compelling YouTube video from 1944

This was the second time dear Churchill and FDR had met in Quebec (Canada) — just 11-months apart.

This September 1944 meeting was just 98-days after D-Day but Churchill knew that victory was ‘THEIRS’ — though it would be another 238-days BEFORE VE-Day. Nonetheless, Churchill and FDR discussed how and who would control areas of defeated Germany. But, who was MISSING. Uncle Joe (Joseph Stalin)!

From what I can piece together Churchill took the RMS Queen Mary to Canada — sailing a very southern route to avoid lurking German U-boats.

It was also his 36th wedding anniversary to Clementine.

The 1st Of The Historic Lincoln-Douglas Took Place This Day 159-Years Ago; August 21, 1858.

If you are a Abraham Lincoln devotee (as I am) you will know the pivotal significance of these debates which revolved around the crucial issue of slavery. Wow. What would Lincoln think of what is happening in the U.S. today?

The first debate was in Ottawa, Illinois — NOT Canada. I marked it on the ‘map’ above.

Think. Reflect. Give thanks. Now THAT was A PRESIDENT.
