Two gone. Lauren Katz, who is in a class to herself, has been ‘Star Baker’ on both episodes. She will win. Click on image to access ABC Webpage for the show.

greatbritishbakeofdfsfsfWe have now watched the first two episodes and we are all in agreement that the 6 American bakers on the ABC show are nowhere near as good as any of the bakers that have appeared in the iconic (and now widely aped) “The Great British Bake Off“.

Given that I, a Brit through-and-through, am always biased, I didn’t say anything about this to begin with. But the two kids having devoured all the episodes of Seasons 4 to 6 (the latter on YouTube) not only adore the British show but are now in the ranks of the cognoscente. They were the first to comment on this halfway through episode 1. Deanna concurred.

I heard the same refrain from the 3 ‘girls’ during episode 2. I have to agree. Bar Lauren Katz who is in a class by herself the others don’t appear to have the expertise, technique, experience or finesse of those that have appeared in the BBC shows. Some of the creations in the ABC show have been laughable if not downright pitiful. Just goes to make you appreciate how lucky we have been with the BBC show.

Good news: there are tons of episodes of the BBC show on YouTube

Promos for this show comes up when we watch ‘Americas Funniest Videos‘ (AFV), probably the ONLY broadcast TV show we watch on a regular basis. Yesterday I set up the DVR to record the series. As YOU know we are suckers for “The Great British Bake Off” and have already finished watching Season 6 on YouTube because we couldn’t wait for it to appear on PBS.

I have heard mixed stories, mainly unflattering, about the US ‘spin off’ (and I will refrain from calling it the ‘rip off’). I note that Paul Hollywood, the MALE co-star of the BBC version, is MISSING. That alone is a huge difference. Paul, of course, with his pithy comments adds so much to the show and he KNOWS his baking. Having a non-baker as the male co-star might not work.

We will see. So a heads up.

“Great British Bake Off” Finalist Ian Cummings’ Birthday Cake For Dalai Lama — Did It Have Eggs?

The announcement that appeared at the end of the “Great British Bake Off” Season 6 Final about Ian baking a cake for the Dalai Lama.

Yes, Ian Cummings and the Dalai Lama go back a long time. He is said to be the official U.K. photographer for the Dalai Lama. Click to access Amazon listing for this book.

The YouTube video. Very cute. The Dalai Lama at his irrepressible best — asking for the candle to be lit. MUST WATCH. Click to access.

This is ALL very good, cute, rewarding and fulfilling BUT I have a very basic, but pivotal, question.

Did Ian Cummings, the Season 6 “Great British Bake Off” also ran, use ANY EGGS in baking this cake?

I suspect he did.

Why? I am trying to work out whether the Dalai Lama STILL eats eggs.

Why? Because I am going to start writing a book about what it was like, in Ceylon, in the early 1960s, to grow up a Buddhist and I am starting my first chapter by talking about eating eggs.

Many Buddhists eat eggs.

The Dalai Lama USED to eat meat. He is said to have become a vegetarian late in life. But some vegetarians eat eggs. Plus today you can get unfertilized eggs.

wattalampam

Wattalampam — my mother would make VERY large dishes of it with dozens of eggs. It was beyond DIVINE. You felt the pounds just adding on to your body as you just smelled it.

I have know strict Hindus that would NOT eat eggs eat fancy puddings that my adoptive mother made and they contained dozens of eggs. I actually confronted her on this. This Indian, a dear friend of the family, had seconds and then thirds of my adoptive mother’s famous ‘Watalappam‘ (a extremely rich cream caramel) — that she would cook mainly for me — one night in Paris. I knew that she had used OVER a dozen eggs preparing it. So this elderly, very gentle gentleman ingested a ton of eggs. He had to have known. My mother said nothing. But this was kosher. Hindus that refused to eat eggs would eat things that contained eggs. Strange?

So I am curious. What do YOU think?

I am writing this at 12:00 pm Eastern (U.S.) on Wednesday, October 7, 2015.

The Series 6 Final will ONLY be airing on BBC (UK) in 3 hours, i.e., 8pm (London).

So I am writing this 3 hours ahead of the airing and I have not gone snooping around the Web to see if I can find out who won. I don’t want to know UNTIL we watch it, probably Friday, on YouTube. Yes, that is going to be difficult tomorrow morning when I read the U.K. ‘Daily Mail‘, first thing in the morning, as is my wont. MAYBE I will forgo that for 2 days! Pretty drastic … right? But, we love this show. Totally addicted and who would have suspected. I DVRed it, last year, on a whim. Had no idea that we would all get totally hooked.

Anywho, I am rooting for Tamal, and I am doing so NOT because he is Indian. Remember I am NOT from India.

I think he has been, right through the show, the ‘fox’. Yes, I know that he has become a British heartthrob.

Lets face it, this is a REALITY show and they, in the end, care about ratings. They would, of course, like this show to be as big as ‘Top Gear‘.

Tamal, as the winner, would give the show quite a bit of publicity and appeal. That is just my thinking; I, a professional cynic.

Interesting how the finalist panned out. Two white, two brown; two males; two females. Yes, yes, that was a coincidence, convenient or otherwise.

Anyway, fingers crossed. Actually we don’t mind who wins. We like them all. I can relate to Ian. They are all very likable and I am sure that that is a fundamental criteria as to who gets to appear in the show.

We have been watching it on YouTube. I detest the buggers who put in fake ‘clips’ just to get hits. How desperate do you have to be to be such a scummy, lowlife? I need to tackle that issue at some point — with YouTube. Lets eliminate SPAM posts. So annoying.

But, for the good stuff … the FINAL. May the best baker win.

BIG Thumbs Up For Friendly’s On Loudon Road, Concord, NH. Always A Fun Place.

So, after ‘Krazy Kids‘ it was, per what was promised on the invitation, off to “Friendly’s” on Loudon Road, Concord, NH.

We started going to Friendly’s, mainly the one on Loudon Road, around Christmas 2011. Deanna is not a great fan of buffetsfriendleysso the ‘Red Apple’, which had been the perennial choice prior to that, was falling out of favor. The two kids will live on ice cream so Friendly’s with their reasonably priced menu options for kids seemed the obvious choice — especially since we invariably go up and down Loudon Road whenever we are in Concord — which is quite often.

Friendly’s hooked me in, in the nicest possible way, with the gift card promotions they were having at the time. You could get a $25 gift card for $20 — and I think they had a few other promotions. But I ended up with a bunch of discounted gift cards — and I would buy another each time I used one, provided it was $20 for a $25. If I had gift cards we would obviously go there so that I could use them. Very clever.

We like the menu. You can actually get some healthy choices.

The folks are always very nice. It is always a fun, uplifting, cheery place. I like that.

Teischan did not want an ice cream cake! Yes, she can be strange like that. Instead she wanted a chocolate cake baked by Deanna.

Deanna called up to find out whether it would be an issue if we brought our own cake. They said ‘No’. I was impressed.

Of the two kids that came to ‘Krazy Kids’ one got picked up at there, by her father, as she was going to Boston for the night.

So we were down to one guest.

Friendly’s was very welcoming. No problem with the cake. They even offered plates through Deanna had brought her own.

They did the Friendly’s Birthday Chant — which was very good. They provided balloons.

I had a salad. Everybody else had ice cream and cake.

It was very reasonable. I was happy.

Thank you. Nice job. We will be back soon.
