Fast.com, The Fast New Way To Check Internet Download Speeds (By Netflix).

by Anura Guruge

fastdotcom

Click to ENLARGE and view here. Go to fast.com to try it out. Automatic.

It is by Netflix BUT you DON’T have to be a Netflix customer.

Works, around the world, on ANY device.

Automatic. You don’t have to press a ‘START’ button.

But only does, from what I can see, DOWNLOAD speed. No upload speed.

Seems pretty accurate — though not 100%. Interesting that it says, right there, to compare against “speedtest.net” — the doyen of speedtests.

Given that I am in New Hampshire I use “gstnetworks.net” when I want a quick read and then use “speedtest.net” if I want to explore more. I will probably still use “gstnetworks.net” — since it does give me UPLOAD speed, and I need to know that.

But try “fast.com” out. It is NEAT.

TDS, Upfront For ONCE, Holds Alton, NH, ‘TDS TV’ Open House On April Fool’s Day.

by Anura Guruge

As some of us are PAINFULLY aware Internet service by TDS in the Alton, New Hampshire area has been a JOKE for the last year or more.

Yes, they have been promising 1 Gigabit Internet for over a year but I have yet to see it.

As far as I am concerned TDS is but a poor and very bad JOKE. I am staying with MetroCast 105 Mbps Broadband Internet service. It might be 10x times slower than 1 Gigabit BUT it is stable, up 98% of the time and the bandwidth rarely if ever fluctuates. I think we all know that that will not be the case with TDS. I would hate to rely on Internet, TV and voice on TDS.

delayed221Having been with TDS for nearly 6 years (starting off with Union Tel. which was acquired by TDS) I think I know TDS better than most that work for TDS.

So when I was told (maybe even ‘promised’) 1 Gigabit Internet in Alton, New Hampshire by October 2015 — with the possibility of being able to beta test it in august 2015 — I took it with a LARGE grain of salt. I just knew it was too good to be true. Lets face it. TDS had been promising me 25Mbps Internet for years and that never came.

That is why, after some intense agonizing, I went with MetroCast’s 75Mbps in January of this year. Other than the 2 weeks of HELL I went through in late February when the service was either down or slow, they have, to my immense surprise and delight, managed to maintain a very stable service with NO bandwidth degradation. Yes, it is true that I use my own ARRIS/Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 to get maximum channel bonding. That said, I have not seen any significant bandwidth drop even on a Saturday night. So I am happy with the MetroCast 75Mbps. Credit where credit is due.

That said I decided to get a 15Mbps Fiber connection from TDS in ADDITION to my 75Mbps from MetroCast!

More on that on a different post SOON.

But while ordering the 15Mbps AND DISH (via TDS because I will get a $100 bill credit next month for doing that) I got the scoop on the 1 Gigabit.

It has been delayed. No surprise. I knew that was inevitable. There are now talking ‘Spring’ 2016 BUT somebody else, in the field, said ‘this time next year’ — meaning June.

Appears that there is some politics at play to do with Towns and the monopoly agreement that carriers sign with them.

Seems Chichester, N.H., now has 1 Gigabit as does New London.

I also got a PRICE. It will be around $123/month BEFORE taxes.

I will keep you posted.

To be fair, as far as I know, this is the first Broadband Internet outage around here since Tuesday, February 26, 2013.

So, that was 83 days ago. So that isn’t too bad. But, this was another doozie. It was down for 6 hours, if not slightly more. There are even indications that the outage that I suffered came about as they were fixing a previous outage in NH.

I fully appreciate that occasional outages are inevitable. My only frustration is that TDS, per what I assume is some misguided policy, refuses to tell you what is happening. To me that is incredible. They really do believe in treating their customers, or at least me, as if I am a total, bloody imbecile that wouldn’t be able to cope with being told as to why both of my broadband connections are down. All I want to know is: is it a down pole, was a fiber cut and if so where, are the servers down and if so why? I can make my own assessments from there. But, no. Just the bloody mushroom treatment. It really is a misguided company.

A couple of months ago I sent a certified letter to its President and CEO, Dave Wittwer politely outlining my issues and asking him whether he could get somebody at TDS to look into them. Nothing. That is outrageous. I did not expect him to read the letter and take action. Real CEOs have one or two assistants, referred to as the ‘Office of the CEO’, who deal with such letters. I have had tremendous support from such offices at Dish and GoDaddy. Given that GoDaddy is my other Internet company, I find the contrast between GoDaddy and TDS like chalk and cheese. GoDaddy, at every level of the food chain, is so customer oriented.

Dave Wittwer who ignored my letter to his office.

I was, however, told by TDS, during what proved to be a 40 minute call, that they had been overcharging me by $9.98 a month. Gee, thanks. No, I didn’t get it fixed. I was waiting till I got my Internet back. Knowing TDS there was always a chance that when they fixed this overcharge I would never get my Internet back.

Ahhhh! This is the problem when there is no competition for service. No Metrocast cannot provide me with the UPLOAD bandwidth I require, neither can FairPoint. I checked again today. The MOST that they can offer is 2Mbps. That is for kids. [No, this is not the download. To me 35Mbps download is of little interest IF my uploads are at 2Mbps. It is upload that differentiates the wheat from the chaff. I need the upload for posting blogs and uploading the books.]

No4GE

So this is the map.

To be fair the U.S. Cellular sale rep. did stress that we were on the edge.

Well, the map is WRONG.

Definitely no 4G at this house.

This is a tall house, all 4 stories and my ‘office’ is in the finished attic.

To start with I couldn’t even get 3G! I had to put it up on a bookshelf, 5′ off the floor. Then I got 3G.

Speed test shows 0.2 Mbps download and 0.1 Mbps. So that is 200 Kbps! Dial-up speeds from the 1990s.

Yes, it load Web pages. But, we can’t survive with that.

Did the same speedtest with out TDS fiber. 15 Mbps. 75x times faster.

I called U.S. Cellular and had also e-mailed the sales rep. last night. Telling me I have 15 days to return — no questions asked. Going to do that.

U.S. Cellular, of late (last 2 years), treats me with kid gloves.

I have been with them for over 14 years. Close to 15. I am not on contract. So, I can switch my cell phones whenever I want.

So they try and be nice to me — though, in general, U.S. Cellular is nice, helpful and good.

The wife and kids woke me up this morning, at 8 am, with the news: ‘we have no Internet‘!

That to me is always a painful punch in the stomach.

Ruins my day. But, I tried to stay as unagitated as possible. It has been 3 bad days in a row for me — and I am crazy busy with all that is going on at the Vatican. On Sunday night I published my 3rd Kindle eBook related to Pope Benedict XVI’s (#266) resignation and the upcoming sede vacante and conclave. My two pope blogs have had over 150,000 hits in the last two weeks. One of them, Papam, to do with pope elections, has had 3,000 more hits so far in 2013 than it did in all of 2011 — and this is a fairly well visited blog. On Sunday, I lost my 25″ main monitor. On Monday, yesterday, I lost power. Today, I lost Internet. I appear to be fated.

Luckily we were going to Laconia for a 10 am appointment. So, I wasn’t going to use my computer.

This was the first TDS outage, as far as I know, since January 17, 2013. So, that was 40 days ago. Not great, but not too bad either.

But, I couldn’t take it anymore. Today was the last straw. We need Internet access. That is why I have two separate Fiber lines coming into the house and pay TDS big bucks for the privilege.

So, after the appointment we drove to U.S. Cellular in Tilton. Yes, we drove past the U.S. Cellular ‘outlet’ at the Belmont Mall. They are a ‘franchise’ (or similar) — while the Tilton ‘office’ is U.S. Cellular owned. I have been going to them for years — after they moved out of the little, but great, ‘kiosk’ they used to have at the Gilford Walmart. ‘My man’, Jason, is no longer there. He was GREAT. He is now the Tech. Lead for them in Concord. But, we got to see one of his friends, ‘Deb’. She is good too. Very understanding and caring. [U.S. Cellular is owned by TDS!]

What we needed was a mobile hotspot — and that is what we got. Got the cheapest plan. This is purely for backup. We are supposed to have 30 Mbps capacity coming into the house — and I check, with speedtest.net, on a regular basis, that at least my dedicated line gibes me at least 14.5 Mbps.

Haven’t used it yet. The capacity drop 100 fold when roaming. But, we don’t roam that often. I will let you know. Because we are on a hill we are supposed to get 4G. It is on their map. Our house is right on the edge of this small 4G cloud centered around Prospect Mountain.

To be fair this was the 1st outage I had experienced since the ‘post-Sandy’ 22-hour downtime on October 31, 2012. So that is 78 days without us experiencing an outage.

So that is GOOD. Thank YOU, TDS. Kudos. Much appreciated.

I had been waiting for one! I knew that they would be doing some maintenance and upgrades — as they must. So, every ‘night’, especially since the New Year, I have been waiting … Yes, I am paranoid when it comes to losing my Internet. Well, I have to have some foibles. So much so that I have changed my work habits.

Since I have so much to do, I have changed my hours. I now work till close to 1 a.m., BUT I stop working [read ‘writing’] on my books [yes, that is plural] by 11:55 pm. I like to backup the Word files online. Yes, I have a built-in backup disk on this PC, 2 USB-connected backups and a USB stick. But, I never feel at ease unless I have an online backup. Yes, another foible. No Internet, no backup. So, I get my backup done by midnight — because that is when TDS usually decides that it is ‘O.K.’ to do disruptive maintenance. Once my files are online, I work on the blogs or do research. That way, if and when I lose the Internet I don’t lose too much work.

That was exactly what happened yesterday. I had saved my Word file. Started doing a new post here. I was also doing some research on MEMP. BANG! Everything stopped. Looked down. Yep, the DREADED yellow triangle. It was 12:20 am. That was O.K. I hadn’t lost much. Plus, it was good to get to bed before 1:10 am, for a change.

So, no gripes. I just WISH TDS would consider sending us an e-mail alert. That really would help me out.
