Wishing YOU A Very Festive ‘Boxing Day 2018’ & With TWO Test Matches It Does NOT Get Better.

I feel bad for the Americans in that they were never blessed to discover and relish ‘Boxing Day‘. It is a wonderful British Holiday, day to chill-out after Christmas and enjoy some sporting action. And IF you are a true Brit there is nothing better than a Test match on Boxing day and this year, i.e., 2018, we have TWO: Australia vs India and South Africa vs Pakistan. I will be watching both of them. Given that Australia is 12-hours ahead of us, I plan to start watching the Australia vs India Test shortly.

Enjoy. Make ‘Boxing Day’ a part of your Christmas ritual. You will be better for it.

Happy ‘Boxing Day 2018’.

The 2004 Tsunami That Devastated SW Sri Lanka Happened This Day 13-Years Ago.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read here. Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Indian_Ocean_earthquake_and_tsunami

This was quite the thing. It wreaked havoc on the the southern part of the SW coast, though the earthquake and the start of the tsunami were to the east. Yes, the east coast was not harmed as much as the south west. The waves wrapped around.

None of my relatives or anybody that I know was affected. That might not be as amazing as it sounds in that I had left Ceylon/Sri Lanka 37-years earlier — plus all my relatives lived slightly north of where the devastation ended.

I do have a theory about why so many Sri Lankans, especially kids, drowned — MOST of them that had gone out along the beach when the ocean retreated, living tons of fish and sealife exposed. The kids in particular ran towards the receding ocean never giving any thought that the water HAD to come back. My explanation: we have negligible tides in Sri Lanka because of an unique shaping of the continental shelf. Folks do NOT see the ocean go in-and-out. This was a novelty. A shame.

How the Buddhist reacted to the huge loss in life was SAD. Folks, including my adoptive father, blamed it on MASS KARMA coming together. And then there were all of these accounts of how Buddha statues miraculously survived the onslaught. But, since Buddha is not a god, never was and is no longer around, what I want to know is who protected the statues and wouldn’t it have been better to ditch the statues and save the kids?

Wishing YOU A Very Happy “Boxing Day 2017”.

It distresses me, greatly, each year, that they do not understand, let alone celebrate, Boxing Day. It must have been celebrated at some stage in the past. Shame it did not endure.

It is, of course, celebrated in Canada — where it is an official holiday (as it should be).

Yes, a wonderful, endearing and enduring British Commonwealth tradition.

I still celebrate it in my heart and in my case, everyday is A HOLIDAY.

But, I started watching the Boxing Day Test, from Melbourne, at 11pm on Christmas Day.

So, HAPPY BOXING DAY, 2017.

Next Week, Year End 2016, On The Stock Market — My Take.

by Anura Guruge

dow2000

Dow ’30’, 1:20pm on Wednesday, December 21, 2016, ‘The Solstice’ — trying but failing to flirt with Dow 20,000.

The U.S. Stock Market, next week, December 27 – 30, in my opinion is going to rater STRANGE.

For a start, with Monday (Boxing Day) a holiday in lieu of Christmas Day (falling on a Sunday) it is going to be a short week (albeit not with stocks getting shorted) — with most likely very THIN volumes.

Whether the Dow hits, or is over, 20,000 is not going to matter most.

But, we are going to see another Trump effect!

Typically this is the week that savvy investors rebalance their portfolio to exploit CAPITAL GAINS — or more to the point CAPITAL LOSSES.

But, this year that is going to be different.

By and large, unless you have been very unlucky or imprudent, there isn’t going to be that much Capital Losses around! The market has done well. {SMILE}

Plus, most people MUST BELIEVE that Trump, in his first year, i.e., 2017, will REDUCE Capital Gains tax.

So why sell in 2016. Wait to see what Trump does in 2017.

That will be a MAJOR FACTOR.

So, I, for one, do NOT expect to see much CAPITAL GAINS/LOSSES related selling next week. We might see some in the first week of January.

And then there will be the CUSTOMARY ‘Window Dressing’ by the Stock Fund Managers, who yet again (as tends to be their wont), got it WRONG. So that will fuel another wave of buying.

That is my take. Not that I plan to do much next week. I am all set — thank you. {SMILE}

Have some BIG options expiring next year.

Happy Holidays.

There will be a fair amount of interest this year since Chanukah/Hanukkah First Night, falls on Christmas Eve.

That is special. Only the 4th time it has fallen on Christmas Even since 1900.

Chanukah/Hanukkah First Night can also fall on Christmas Day, as it did in 2005 and will again in 2024.

But, given the 8-day span of Chanukah/Hanukkah this ‘Chrismukkah’ conjunction can happen any time Chanukah/Hanukkah falls December 18th and Christmas day.

This has happened 33 times since 1900 to 2016: 1902, 1905, 1908, 1910, 1913, 1916, 1921, 1924, 1927, 1932, 1935, 1940, 1943, 1946, 1951, 1954, 1959, 1962, 1965, 1970, 1973, 1978, 1981, 1984, 1989, 1992, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2011 & 2016.

It will happen 20 times between next year and 2099: 2019, 2022, 2024, 2027, 2030, 2035, 2038, 2046, 2049, 2054, 2057, 2065, 2068, 2073, 2076, 2084, 2087, 2092, 2095 & 2098.

You don’t have to wait long. Next one is in but 3 years! 2019.

So you can see why it, viz. Chanukah/Hanukkah First Night, can and will fall on Christmas Eve (as it will in 2016), Christmas Day (as it will on 2024) or on Boxing Day (as it will on 2032).
