We went to Boston, on Saturday, January 12, 2019, for the last day of ‘Durgin Park‘. But, given we are members (of long-standing) of the ‘Museum of Science‘ it would have been crazy not to spend some time there as well. And that is exactly what we did, and as ever it was worthwhile and rewarding. Plus, as members we get discounted parking; $22 for 9-hours (which by Boston standards is not too bad).
I took more pictures — many more. But, just wanted to share a few with you. Enjoy.

Yes, we were there and it was SPECIAL. Glad I made an effort to get down to ‘Quincy Market‘ for the DAY. Yes, it was poignant too. There are folks losing JOBS! The kind of elderly (i.e., MY AGE) waitress who served us, with aplomb, ‘Allison’, had been there for 20-years. She wasn’t too happy. I took care of her with my TIP. {Smile} And she smiled too when she saw it. There were hugs all over the place.
We got there early. It was likely to get MOBBED later in the day. We heard from folks that THEY (i.e., Durgin Park) ran out of food at 5pm last Sunday!
I knew they opened at 11:30am. So, I planned to be there for that. I expected a LINE and there was one, BUT it wasn’t as long as I had expected.
We left home at 8am! It was bitterly cold. We parked at the Boston ‘Museum of Science‘ (where we get discounted parking because we are members) by 9:40am. We took the MBTA to ‘Quincy Market’. We were there by around 10:15am. There was NO LINE. So, we ‘did’ the ‘Market’. ‘Faneuil Hall‘ was closed because of Trump’s Shutdown.
By 11am there was a line forming. We joined it at 11:15am. There were about 30 people ahead of us. Around 11:25 they opened the doors. They felt sorry for us. IT WAS COLD. They let 50 folks in. We were in that batch. The kitchen was not as yet open but you could start with drinks.
It was GOOD. Great atmosphere. Everybody was reminiscing.
It was WAY TOO early for I. I don’t normally have my first meal of the day till 1:40pm. So, I just ordered a few appetizers and even then we brought much of it home. But, no matter. What counted was that we were THERE.
I was never a regular patron. So, I can’t claim to have a special relationship with ‘Durgin Park’. But, I did go there, for dinner, for the first time 32-years ago. September 1986. I remember that. I have eaten there AT LEAST 10-times. Most likely more. So, I am not a total stranger either.
Well … another bit of history gone. But, I can say, with PRIDE, that I was THERE.

Foucault pendulums intrigue, fascinate, mesmerize and puzzle me. Yes, of course, having done tons of physics even at college level, I understand the principle. I collect and play with gyroscopes (and break quite a few too in the process so that I am always short). So I know all of that, though until today I did not realize that Léon Foucault came up with the name ‘gyroscope‘, though he was by no means the inventor. While I appreciate the preservation of motion through the gyroscopic action what I don’t get is
The book. I don’t think I have read it. One book by Eco was enough for me, I think.
The Panthéon in Paris, where Léon Foucault publicly demonstrated his giant pendulum is one of my favorite buildings in Paris. It was quite close to where my adoptive parents lived in Paris, 1978 to 1992. So I would wonder in quite often. I know I have seen ‘the pendulum’ in Paris but after so many years I can’t vouch that I did see the replica now at the Panthéon. I do go and gwak, for as long as possible (until Deanna comes and drags me away) at the absolutely beautiful pendulum, tucked away in the corner, at the Boston Museum of Science. Just captivates me. What I don’t still get is why the rotation of the hook that it is attached doesn’t dampen the motion. I will have to look into this.

Squam Lakes Science Center — Always Uplifting And Relaxing

I have been visiting the Squam Lake Science Center since at least 2001. Typically we try to go at least once a year – last year being the exception when we didn’t make it up there at all. In the Summer of 2009, Teischan and I used to go for a 75 minute visit one or twice a month, well into October! We had Boston Museum of Science (MoS) membership that gave us free admission, and Deanna had a part-time, bi-weekly, 90 minute, merchandizing gig in Meredith. We would tag along, drop her off in Meredith and go to the Science center. So we know it well.
This Saturday was their annual, ‘New Hampshire’ day — $3 entrance for all NH residents. Bar last year, we typically try and make it for this ‘special’ day. The weather cooperated, partly because we planned to get their around 1pm which is when the clouds were supposed to clear. It was glorious. Sunny and high 60s. It wasn’t too packed, most having left by the time we arrived.
It is always such a pleasant, uplifting experience, especially the walk back through the meadow (other than the time when a Kestral being shown to the guests by a volunteer, flew off his hand and attacked Teischan who was 3 years old at the time and was sitting in a stroller — luckily doing no harm other than scaring all of us).
They now have 3 Bobcats, two males and a female (and no, we will not see any kittens because, alack, they are, for their own reasons, not a breeding facility). They only used to have one. Teischan likes the Bobcats. Once, when there was just one in the enclosure, it came down to the glass and tried to play with the strap of our camera. It was memorable.
We were there when the two Mountain Lion cubs were brought to the center c. 2004 (or 2005). So we have seen them grow. One of them has also ‘played’ with us through the glass on one of our many visits. I am never sure about the black bear exhibit. Something about it. But, overall, a wonderful, always educational experience.
