The First Man Ever In Space, Yuri Gagarin, Was Born This Day In 1934.

by Anura Guruge

I got to meet him when he visited Ceylon
(now Sri Lanka) in 1961.

I was 7 years old. But, of course, knew who he was.

I got to shake his hand.

To this day, I consider this one of the highlights of my rather uneventful life.

It Is Vivian Richards, ‘The Master Blaster’ Celebrates His 66th Birthday Today. Happy Birthday, Viv.

by Anura Guruge

IVA Richards — Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards, a man that has given me much joy, entertainment and inspiration. He was the man.

That great HOT Summer of 1979 and he missed the Lord’s Test (which I attended, on the Saturday), because he had ‘mono’, no doubt from kissing too many girls.

He has done much for cricket, his native Antigua, the ‘West Indies’ and the cricketing world in general.

I feel honored that I got to meet him, in person, a number of times.

Happy Birthday, Viv. Thanks for all the GREAT Times.

A section of his analytical engine and you can see the digits.

Another of the British polymaths of that era. We were blessed.

He had quite the mind. Pretty amazing all the things he successfully turned that mind to.

226-years ago. Sobering. Wonder what he would make of today’s smartphones, such as say the Google Pixel 2.

The Eponymous Henry J. Heinz Was Born This Day, 173-Years Ago — October 11, 1844.

I am not a great consumer of his soups but I know we have Heinz products in the house — if nothing else the ketchup. Obviously one of the better known names around.

Kind of funny, I always thought that Andy Warhol’s Soup Cans were that of Heinz. I just went and looked. They are not!

Ironic and sad that he died in 1919, aged 74, of pneumonia. Alas, that was before we had antibiotics. I wonder whether he was given hot soups in his last days.

An interesting & educational YouTube video.

I had to write this post as soon as I learned it was the great man’s birthday — it was Pavlovian!

I am fond of his work so, to be fair, I would have written this even if it wasn’t Pavlovian.

Easy to forget that what he was really researching was DIGESTION in dogs and not conditioning! The above video makes that very clear.

Also note that it is his birthday PER the Julian calendar that was being used in Russia at the time! The Russians used the Julian calendar till 1919 — i.e., post revolution! Wow. Between 1800 and 1900 the difference between the two calendars was 12-days. Hence the September 14/September 26 ‘confusion’.

‘Poor’ DHL. ‘They’ made his life ‘unpleasant’ during his rather short life; he dying, from TB, aged just 44. As with so many others he is more revered and appreciated posthumously. That is a shame. So, on September 11, his birthday spare a thought for DHL and his indubitable brilliance.

Princess Victoria at 4. She was always SHORT and very conscious of that.

She was quite the lady and Queen. Definitely changed the course and complexion of British history and culture.

I learned a LOT about her watching the PBS Classic “Young Victoria“. There is also a movie of that same title I would like to see.

198 years ago. That seems like a long time ago.

He died April 2, 2005 — just 12 years ago.

Much has happened since. We are into his second successor.

He was quite the pope. Probably will be considered one of the 10 greatest popes in time.
