The ‘Dell’ ‘G5 Gaming Desktop PC’ Is Woefully Short Of ‘Juice’ & Cooling.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access post from nearly a year ago.

Yes, another year has gone by & I have still NOT got myself a new PC. This is CRAZY. I appreciate that. I really am on borrowed time now. This PC is 11-years old! 11-years old.

It is NOT funds. Mainly that I have been too busy. I wrote & published 4, 5 or 6 books last year. I really am not sure as to how many. It was at least 4. That much I know.

So, I am yet again in PC shopping mode. I have now decided I am going to buy one online. I just CANNOT find a local person that I am comfortable with.

I happened to look at the Dell G5.

All the specs — highly customizable — are GOOD, bar the cooling fans & power supply (PSU). Dell does NOT let you UPGRADE them.

The PSU & the cooling is BARELY adequate. Yes, of course, it will work, BUT you really are ‘on the knife edge’.

You are close to the top limit of the PSU & the cooling is a joke.

So, I Googled. I was right.

The G5 will RUN HOT & I do NOT like HOT PCs. Many things I like hot, BUT NOT PCs.

So, I am giving YOU a HEADS UP so that you won’t get into trouble.

“The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” (2018) Movie On Netflix — Outstanding, Heartwarming & Funny.

by Anura Guruge

<

YouTube trailer

Yes, I loved it. But, then again it was like bespoke for I. All the elements that appeal: British, historical, pigs, books, London & islands.

Great story. Haven’t checked whether it is based on a true story. But, the German occupation of Guernsey was very real & painful. This story very could have happened even if the name of the Society is a tad contrived.

I even recognized — & even more surprisingly correctly placed two of the cast. That is very unusual for I.

Yes, I am sure it is not for everyone. But, if you are into WWII period drama, literature, humor, pigs & a bit of romance you can’t go wrong. Yes, it is predictable, but that doesn’t detract. SMILE.

I enjoyed it. Not sure it can be repeated per se.

My Books On Amazon Are Being PIRATED! (Kind Of Flattered In A Strange Way.)

by Anura Guruge

Happened to notice it on Saturday that some of my paperback books on Amazon had CRAZY prices — like $283.53. WOW!

First thought it was an Amazon glitch.

Also note the publication date: Jan 1, 1656. WOW!

This morning I contacted Amazon. They said these books have been pirated. Somebody trying to sell them & make some money.

BUT, I feel bad for them. Folks don’t buy my books at my INTENTIONALLY LOW PRICES.

So, why would they buy them at these CRAZY prices?

I am flattered.

Yes, I know my books are PRICELESS but this is FUNNY.

Yes, I have to flag them, individually, to Amazon. A Pain!

When You Get A Royalty Cheque For TECHNOLOGY Books You Wrote 17 Years Ago!

by Anura Guruge

This is for a ‘Web Services‘ book I wrote and published in 2003 — 17-years ago!

‘They’, i.e., ‘Elsevier’, paid me a decent advance in 2013. I was happy with JUST that. SMILE.

Wow. I never realized they were selling the e-book for this much. It must be GOOD. SMILE.

So, yes, I know I don’t make any money on my recent books. But, that is OK. I still just SMILE when people think I haven’t made money as an author. SMILE.

If these were NOT technology books it wouldn’t crack me up at all. But, these are books that are now 60% out-of-date! Yes, some of the basic principles will still be the same but a lot of water flows under the bridge over the course of 15-years when it comes to technology.

These books have a ‘Look Inside‘ capability and people can return them. That I am still getting royalties mean that people must still find some value in them. That pleases me. These were good books when I wrote them.

I also got pretty decent advances on each of the books. So, I am pleased. I am smiling.

SMILE.

‘College Of Cardinals’ — Snapshot Of The Demographics On February 15, 2020.

Just compiled this for my LATEST pope book. Yes, my 11th and possibly last. Compiling this data, especially the ‘vocations’, isn’t as easy as you would think. I had to do some data processing ‘magic’ to extract that data — without having to spend inordinate hours counting ‘titles’. SMILE.

Thought I would share this with you because it could be out-of-date within dates. SMILE.

Enjoy.

Perfect Background Music — A Bhajan At That — For Indexing A 500-Page Book.

by Anura Guruge

The YouTube video.

Click to ENLARGE. My Adobe PDF-based, unique indexing method.

When I am writing I need absolute silence. I have to focus. So, no music or other distractions, whatsoever, even in the background. Has to be quiet. Still.

Not so after I have finished writing. Often when I am completing the production of a book (and I am on my 31st, I think) I like some soothing music — to keep me going.

This is very true when I am indexing a book. I still index my books by hand. The so called automated methods are too cumbersome and unreliable. 40-years ago I, while working for IBM, I wrote an indexing program for computer program listings. If I was as good at programming as I then was, I could try and write one. But, for now I index using my own unique method.

I use the Adobe PDF search function. I already have the book as a PDF. So, there is no extra step here.

I use Adobe Search on each word I am going to index and just transcribe the page numbers kindly & conveniently provided for I by Adobe. See image above. So, per that example, I know that the word ‘Domus’ appears on page 4 of the book. Now it is just a case of banging that page number, viz., 4, into the index entry. Very mechanical, but tedious and time-consuming.

So, I like to have some soothing music to keep me going. What music I choose depends on the circumstances. Thirty years ago I have used Garth Brooks. Oliver Mtukudzi has served me well for more than one book. I have also known to rely on ‘Chant‘ music. An Indian version of ‘chant’ is ‘bhajan’ — a type of devotional music. It can be hypnotic an very relaxing. So, today I went looking in YouTube for Bhajans. Found this one, serendipitously. It is long, and it worked well.

I wanted to share it with you. Enjoy.

Specs For The New PC I Am Hoping To Have Built.

by Anura Guruge

My current (main) PC is old. Very old. I won’t even say how old it is because I do not want to jinx myself. It is way old.

I was, this time last year, working on getting a new PC when I busted my knee. The PC fell by the wayside.

But, I am back to specing a new one out.

MAIN change is that — after our horrible experience with them — I have ditched the ASUS motherboard in favor of ‘Gigabyte’. I am told that their motherboards are solid.

Yes, it is way, way over-speced! SMILE.

No, I do NOT game. Never have, never will. Computer gaming has never had any appeal for I. Do not see what folks see in it.

This PC is for Web research, blogging, WRITING, stock trading and posting pictures! SMILE.

Yes, it is at least 8x more powerful than it needs to be, BUT I believe in over-speced PCs.

My current PC was similarly over-speced. Hence its longevity.

This new PC could very well be MY last PC!

Looking back, given the amount of work I do on them, 7-days a week, I haven’t had that many PCs. In a way it is scary.

But, before I get this built, I have to finish my latest book. SMILE.

I will keep you posted.

STILL Cracks Me Up When I Get A Royalty Cheque For TECHNOLOGY Books I Wrote 16 Years Ago!

The statement always come in September and the payment hits the bank at the end of the month.

This year it was 1/4 of what it was last year, BUT it is still enough to guy me a gallon of red wine and I am cool with that.

This was a ‘Web Service’ book I wrote and published in 2003 — 16-years ago!

Cracks Me Up When I Get A Royalty Cheque For TECHNOLOGY Books I Wrote 15 Years Ago!

Happens this time every year. It comes out of the blue.

I am NOT complaining. It is NOT a big check BUT it can keep me in wine for 2-weeks. That is better than a kick-in-the-teeth any day of the week.

In Praise Of Kneeling Chairs.

by Anura Guruge

This 25(+)-year kneeling chair may not have saved my life,
but, it sure saved my back.

Without it I would have been a bent over, drug-popping cripple by now.

Today I finally put it out of its misery and got a new kneeling chair!

I have been using kneeling chairs for nearly 30-years. I am sure glad I got hooked on them that far back. IF NOT for them my back would be spaghetti by now. But, thanks to my kneeling chairs I have pretty decent back muscles, back strength and posture.

That is the beauty of kneeling chairs. It forces you to brace yourself, while seated, using your back muscles. Nothing else. The only thing that keeps you upright or semi-upright are your back muscles.

I was lucky, I started young (or at least before it was too late). Can’t deny it; I did not discover kneeling chairs until I was in my 30s. But, in my 30s I was super fit! So, using a kneeling chair was no issue. I had a lot of muscles in very good working order.

I have been wracking my brain to remember how I stumbled upon kneeling chairs. I think (but I can’t be sure) that I saw someone (and it might have been the legendary Lyman Chapin of ISO OSI fame) using one at Data General (where I worked briefly in the late 1980s). I immediately saw the benefits. I got one shortly afterwards.

The one I retired today, I have had (and used ‘daily’) for over 25-years!

At a minimum I have written 20 books, 200 published articles and 20,000 blog posts while seated on it!

Yes, I have spent a LOT of time seated on it and it bears the scars — as do I! Yes, I have calluses on my legs from kneeling on this chair. Yes, that is duct-tape! I hated to get rid of it. It and I had quite literally bonded together. But, it was beginning to hurt.

So, today I got a new one with cushions 3x as thick! It feels different, but it is sure comfortable.

The real point of this post was to tell YOU to consider using a kneeling chair. It is so, so, so good for your back.

Think about it. They don’t have to be expensive. The one that I bought, from Amazon, was $60.

My new $60 kneeling chair from Amazon.
