I had no idea. I was confused the first time I heard it used in that context. Appears that in 12th Century England it WAS the word for a whorehouse. Routinely used.
I learnt this via the latest Amazon Audible book I am listening, viz. “A Mortal Bane”. See below. Kind of neat. I can see how this word could evolve over time.

Irish ‘Catherine Ryan Howard’ Could Be The 21st Century ‘Agatha Christie’ — Despite Her Focus On Serial Killers.
As you can see I RAVED about her in October. Let me now confirm that I think she is absolutely bloody brilliant. Over the last few weeks I have finished listening to her “The Nothing Man” & “Distress Signals“. Both are BEYOND good. And the crazy thing is that I am not that much into crime stuff! But, she is quite the writer. I am in awe. I think she is exceptional. A rare talent. I am sure glad I stumbled upon her.
You definitely should check her out. You will NOT regret it.
Some of you may have already worked this out, but it has only SLOWLY dawned upon me. OK, to be fair, I ONLY started listening to Amazon ‘Audible’ books in September of this year. So, it has only been a few months (3 to be precise) though I have gone through, as you can see from top image, 13 quite ‘hefty’ books.
I had listened to books on CD & even tape in the past — but at least 15-years ago. Much has changed in those years. That, I appreciate, is one of the reasons I am so enamored with Audible. Today’s book are not just read — they are acted out. One of the books I listened to, “The Liar’s Girl“, had 3 people reading it to do the various voices. It is no longer a monotonous reading. They act out the reading. So, they kind of add LIFE to the book & characters.
It is no longer JUST the author, BUT now — with the Audible books — the person reading it! That person needs to get nearly as much credit — & they do!
It is also the case that WHERE I listen to my books is different. That adds to the allure. I only listen, through noise cancelling FULL HEADSETS while I am walking. So, very few distractions. It is even better than listening when you are driving. I can concentrate — & I do.
I have come to realize that some books are better listened to than they would be read! I think I get through listened books faster — mainly because I am a notoriously SLOW reader. Much of that is because I like to reread sentences & paragraphs. I love words, I love structure, I love writing. So, when I read, IF I come across good writing, I reread it for the pleasure.
That I am now thinking that some books are better listened to than read is a revelation to I. To I, that is profound. So, it is now not just content. It is presentation. Forget judging a book by its cover. It has become judging a book by how it is read aloud to you.
I am still formulating my thoughts. I am putting this out to get you to think. Get your thoughts. Think about it. Thanks.
It was good. Decent.
I am GLAD I listened to it, rather than read it! I never thought I would ever utter that phrase about any book. But, ‘Audibles’ has made me into a convert. That I walk to for 2-hours every morning is a HUGE factor. I listen while I walk. So, I am killing two-birds …. That helps. This book sure kept me company & for the last couple of weeks I looked forward, every morning, to hearing it as I walked.
No, it is not another “Pillars of the Earth“. “Pillars …“, quite literally, changed my LIFE! I would NOT be writing this if not for “Pillars …“. “Pillars …” civilized I. Converted me from being the philistine I was. But, that was nearly 25-years ago — & “Pillars” was the first book of that genre I have read.
So, maybe the comparison is wrong & harsh. I am 25-years OLDER & much more attuned & au fait with the subject matter.
Definitely a fairly decent story. Yes, Ken gets your attention. We all know that.
But, this story, ALAS, has a HUGE, HUGE fatal flaw in its plot line! Sorry.
I won’t divulge it. I will just say it has to do with ‘Lady Regna’ & her relatives. Leave it at that.
I would definitely recommend listening to this — while driving, walking or exercising. That way you can justify your time commitment. SMILE.

Amazon’s Product Return System Is Temporarily Not Working! But, You Can Get Them To Call You To Handle Return, In This Case A PetSafe Wireless Pet Containment System.

I don’t even want to talk about it right now, I am so mad. Another $200+ item, highly rated, that proved to be a total failure. I just don’t believe it. It was a wireless Pet Containment System for Maya to keep her in our yard during the Summer – the ‘PetSafe Wireless Pet Containment System, PIF-300‘. We installed last week, I even going to the trouble of fabricating a bracket to have it wall mounted, out of the way, in our utility room.
It sure works — no question about that. The problem is the false warnings to the dog — the audible beep that tells the dog that it is getting close to the boundary. Our collar was beeping even in the house! It was driving Maya nuts because she couldn’t figure out what to do. Deanna, who wanted a containment system, tried every possible setting: ‘Hi’, ‘Low’, the distance setting from 4 to 8. Still INTERMITTENT false audible alarms in the house and also outside. For me it was the false alarms inside the house that was the killer. That is not fair on the dog — and I have had invisible fences in the past.
The instruction book does talk about false alarms in the house! Yes, of course, Deanna did all the suggested rectification steps and the damn thing would still beep while Deanna is holding it in her hand! That was it. It was going back.
As I have mentioned before, I do the ordering, Deanna handles all returns (irrespective of vendor) — in the case of Amazon logging into my account to do so.
She tried to process the return yesterday. Right at the end, when they are supposed to print a copy of the ‘return authorization’ the Amazon Web site would croak. She tried a number of times — hampered somewhat by the 6 hour TDS outage we suffered. Still no luck.
She tried again this morning. Her computer has a mind of its own. So, I tried it from my computer. Same result, which was this:
Not a problem. Given my very long, very involved, intimate relationship with Amazon I know how to get them to call me. I had them calling me within the minute.
Yes, they handled the return right then and there on the phone and arranged for an UPS pickup tomorrow. They even sent me all the ‘slips’ by e-mail, though I don’t have to do anything. Was pretty painless. Took less than 5 minutes — though I handled the return with Deanna standing at my elbow telling me what to say.
So just a heads up. If you get this error message when trying to return something to Amazon just get them to call you. Then Bob really is your uncle.
