Having Genuine Google Doodle, For Dame Jean Macnamara, On ‘April 1’, Was Stupid!

by Anura Guruge

Yes, I know it was her birthday — after I looked her up. She is by no means a household name — and I suspect that that is even the case in her how country of Australia.

So, what was Google THINKING?

Yes, Google as we all know has a long and storied history of doing clever April 1st jokes.

Yes, we all know about the ongoing pandemic. Yes, I worked out that Google MIGHT refrain from joking around this year — given the gravity of the situation.

So, it would have been BEST not to do ANYTHING.

Do the Google Doodle for her the next day. That would have been better.

This was STUPID — Google.

Say it after I. “This was STUPID Google”.

Last Time Easter Was On April 21, As In 2019, Was 1957 — 62-Years Ago.

by Anura Guruge

Easter, your quintessential ‘movable feast’ can fall between March 22 (since it HAS to be after the Spring Equinox) and April 25 (i.e., essentially the 28-day lunar month).

So, this year’s April 21 Easter is at the further end of the range.

As with last year, we again have a 62-year gap. That is quite the coincidence.

Another coincidence. Last year’s April 1 Easter was the first such Easter as of 1956. This year, first April 21 since 1957.

I have as yet not been able to work out why we get a 62-year gap … as between 1956 and 2018 and twice in prior years. The 68-year confounds me even further.

11-year gaps for such ‘movable holidays’ is common — the 11 having to do with the 7-day week and leap years every 4-years. As you can see we do get 11-year gaps quite often, just not the last time around. 35-year gaps are fairly common too.

But, 62- and 68-year are the LONGEST possible gaps for Easter.

British RAF 100-Year Birthday, Royal Flypast Videos — July 10, 2018.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read here. Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Air_Force

The actual Royal Air Force (RAF) birthday falls on April Fool’s Day but anybody with any sense knows that the British RAF is no laughing matter. Its history is remarkable that it has never been involved in a losing war. Yes, the RAF has only participated in wars that were won by the British or the Allies. Something to think about.

The actual 100th birthday was in April 2018, BUT ‘they’ held back this 100-plane Royal flyover till July — so that the Summer visitors can get into the act.

Check out the videos. There are more on YouTube including other RAF flyovers.

When Easter Sunday Has Fallen On ‘April 1’, “April Fool’s Day” — Last Time Was 1956.

by Anura Guruge

The sea change Gregorian calendar was introduced in October 1582.

Easter Sunday fell on April 1 two years later in 1584 — which, coincidentally, was also around the time the notion of “April Fool’s” kicked-in. One theory is that around this time, in France, the start of the New Year was moved from ‘April 1’ to ‘January 1’. Those who got confused by this move were referred to as April Fool’s. That, however, is one theory.

I have as yet not been able to work out why we get a 62-year gap … as between 1956 and 2018 and twice in prior years. The 68-year confounds me even further.

Last Time Passover, Rather Than Easter, Fell On ‘April 1’.

by Anura Guruge

Easter, this year (i.e., 2018), falls on Sunday, April 1. That is perfectly fine in that it is well within the March 22 to April 25 window for Easter.

The only this that is STRANGE, very strange, is that Easter has not fallen on April 1 in 62-years! Last time was in 1956. That is the LARGEST gap between Easter falling on the same day, in this case, April 1.

So, I was curious as to see when Passover has begun on April 1. The window for Passover is March 21 to April 20. So, again, April 1 is very much within the range. As you can see from the graphic the last time was in 1988 and before that 1950. That was a 38-year gap. The 2026 also happens after a 38-year gap. Neato.

Easter Friday & Passover 2018 Are On The SAME DAY — March 30.

by Anura Guruge

This happens more often that you probably realized, i.e., Good Friday and Passover falling on the SAME DAY.

It happened in 2015 & 2011 and it will happen again next year. Having it happen in consecutive years is rare, and I will tackle that next year. {Smile}

Given that the two holidays are related it should not come as a great surprise that they do fall, close together.

For those that haven’t thought about it the Crucifixion happened just after Passover. Jesus had come to Jerusalem for Passover. The last supper is believed to have a Passover connection.

Hence the connection. In early Christianity Easter was celebrated at the same time as the Passover. So that they fall together, per a now very convoluted and artificial formula used by the Western Church, is to be expected.

Easter Sunday, per the ‘latest’ formula, can fall between March 22 (the day after the nominal ‘March 21’ Spring Equinox) and April 25.

However, Easter Sunday can NEVER COINCIDE with the Passover! The formula used to calculate Easter has this built-in.

So, it is always GOOD FRIDAY that can coincide with Passover — and never Easter per se.

Just thought you might find this interesting.

Last Time Easter Fell On “April 1” Was 1956 — And That Is NO April Fool’s Joke!

by Anura Guruge

easterdates

Easter, of course, is your original ‘moveable feast‘. It can fall between March 22 and April 25.

So, Easter falling on April 1 is indeed possible.

It just has NOT fallen on April 1 since 1956. That is 62-years ago,

That means Easter on April Fool’s Day will be a first for many.

Just letting you know. Yes, I will do more Easter posts in the coming weeks.

Just wanted to get this out.

Think about. Last time — 62-years ago!

P.S., 62-years is about the LONGEST GAP you can have in terms of Easter falling on the same day of the year.
