‘The Passionate Journey’ (1949) By ‘Irving Stone’, About U.S. Painter ‘John Noble’ Was A Tortuous Read.

My copy of the 1949 book.
Nothing that tells you what it is about!
I class ‘Irving Stone’ as one of my favorite authors in that his ‘The Agony and the Ecstasy‘ is one my most favorite books & I am also very fond of his ‘The Origin‘ & ‘Men To Match My Mountain‘. As is my wont when it comes to authors I know, I invariably pick up any & all of their books whenever I come across them — used, swap or just giveaway.
That is how I had come across ‘The Passionate Journey’. It was a discard from a local library. Since it lacked a cover, I had NO idea what the book was about! But, it was a ‘Irving Stone’ & that was good enough for I.
It proved to be about mentally-tortured American painter ‘John Noble’. I had never heard of him. I had to look him up. Quite the painter. Interesting style. Very powerful & compelling in a strange way. I do like his paintings. So, I am glad to have learnt of him. NOT a happy soul. Had mental issues & resorted to alcohol to try & mitigate them — though never successfully.
The book, though based on ‘John Noble’, is classed FICTION. A lot of it is just that. Made up, conjecture, embellishment.
This was one of his early work. 12-years prior to ‘The Agony‘. He had NOT hot his stride as a writer.
This book was HARD to read. Though not a very long book it took me nearly 3-months to read it. It would put me to sleep — though the story was quite interesting. So, unless you are interested in ‘John Noble’ you should give this book a skip.
I have nearly all his books. Must try & read another later this year or next.
A ‘John Noble’ SAMPLER from the Web.

Why The Crotch Accentuating Uniforms Of The U.S. Speed Skaters?
First and foremost — time to get mind out of the gutter.
Second, it is NOT just the women’s uniforms, though, for what must be reasons Freudian, it is much more pronounced in the case of the women! It might have to do with their anatomy — and I stress ‘might’.
The uniforms were designed and made by Under Armour.
That grey crotch design was not an accident or purely a marketing gimmick to grab your attention.
I knew that the design had a reason. I really did. I, however, wasn’t sure what. I thought that it might be for camera contrast to help with accurate timing. That, to I, made sense.
Well it appears it is slightly more mundane than that. They are FRICTION REDUCING patches — made out of a material called “ArmourGlide“. It is supposed to reduce friction by up to 65%. I assume that “ArmourGlide” must be expensive. If not why not make the entire lower half of the uniform in it? Maybe the entire uniform because it must also reduce wind friction.
But, now you know.
IF you look carefully you will notice that other non-US speed skaters also have ‘patches’ in the crotches — but noting as noticeable and accentuated as the Americans.
Well it isn’t as bad as the 2014 Colombian (Bogota Humana) Women’s Cycling Team Outfit.

Tom Brady Illustrates Why American Football Is NOT Cricket.

Handshakes are de rigueur among crickets,
especially the professionals.
Google “cricket teams shaking hands” for more images.
Per British lore horse racing is the sport of kings, and cricket that of gentlemen (though we now have ladies galore, from around the world, playing it at the highest levels).
There is much emphasis in cricket on sportsmanship, so much so that there is indeed a British adage ‘just not cricket‘ to describe bad behavior of the Donald Trump/Tom Brady variety.
The teams shaking hands, all around, with nary an exception, is now part of the overall formalities at the end of the game. The game ends with the teams shaking hands. Such a nice gesture. It is not unusual for the opposition to make a point of shaking hands with a batsman that makes a good innings.
So Brady’s petulant, puerile behavior would be unthinkable in cricket. The management would have been all over him. But, this is why American sports is NOT cricket.
Kind of a shame. Cricket could add so much gentility and class to American society. Donald Trump would never dream of acting like he does IF he ever had the fortune of being exposed to cricket.

The First Chinese Space Walk Took Place This Day, 9-Years Ago; September 27, 2008.

China, following the Russia & the U.S.A., was only the 3rd country in the World to conduct a spacewalk from one of their own spacecrafts. French, Japanese, Australian & Swedish had done so before the Chinese — but either from the Russian MIR space station or from U.S. space shuttles.
The Chinese spacewalk came a full 43-years after the very first spacewalk, by Russian Alexey Leonov on March 18, 1965.
The first American spacewalk was that same year, 77-days later.

Some of you who are not political junkies, like I, may not realize that the entire U.S. ‘National Park Service‘ ideal is under threat from Trump who plans to drastically cut funding and ‘de-classify’ many of the currently protected ‘National Monuments‘.
This Doodle, from invariably ‘Politically Correct‘ and very Liberal Google appears to be taking a dig, quite rightly, at the present Administration in D.C.

1592 Was THE Ultimate Pi Day BUT No One Would Have Known That — 3/14/1592.
The first 10 decimal digits are
3.141592653 …
Two reasons why nobody in 1592 would have realized this.
-
The 3/14 notation for month/date is primarily American and would NOT have been widely used in Europe in the 16th Century.
-
The value of Pi to 7-digits had been calculated by then BUT was NOT widely known.
Worth thinking about.
