As with the Bismarck, this is stuff that all those that were fortunate enough to receive an education in Britain knows about.

We lost a LOT of people and ships. But, as ever, we PREVAILED in the end. {SMILE}

Harold Wilson, MY First British Prime Minister, Was Born Today, 101-Years Ago — March 11, 1916.

by Anura Guruge

He was Prime Minister from 1964 to 1970 & 1974 to 1976.

Those coincided with my formative years in Britain.

My very first visit, just for a week was in August 1967. It was two year later, in September 1969 that I moved to Britain to eventually become a citizen etc.

I graduated and went to work for IBM in 1974.

So Harold was P.M. during all those early years.

I was not much into politics BUT remember that these were turbulent days.

I also remember kind of liking Harold. I think he was a likable bloke. I could be wrong.

“Battle Of The Somme” #WeAreHere Tributes Across The U.K. By Uniformed Reenactment Volunteers.

by Anura Guruge

Bloodiest known battle
in all of human history.

794,238 Allied troops from the
U.K., Australia, Bermuda, Canada, India, Newfoundland,
New Zealand, South Africa, Southern Rhodesia & France
lost their life in this battle
that lasted from July 1 to November 18, 1916.

[The U.S. did NOT participate in WW I until April 6, 1917.]

This #WeAreHere reenactment by 1,500 uniformed volunteers
was to remind people of all those that were lost.
It appears that each volunteer carried business cards
showing the name one that died in the battle.

Very neat. Very British. Very touching.
Very sobering.

National Parks 100th Birthday, i.e., Centennial, Is Just For The ‘Park Service’ — Not Any Famous Parks.

by Anura Guruge

nps100b11aaasdd

Click to access “National Park Service” (NPS) 100th Birthday celebration page. They do point out correctly that this is all about the August 25, 1916 CREATION of the ‘Park Service’.

And President Obama visited 2 National Parks
to mark the upcoming Centennial.

To be fair the National Park Service (NPS), in general, has done a good job pointing out that this 100th Birthday celebrations relate to the CREATION of the Park Service than any of the famous National Parks.

They do, however, as I have already pointed out subscribe to this — THOUGH that is wrong! Acadia only became a National Park in 1919.

Here is an extract from an Excel spreadsheet I created on when the
current 59 National Parks were officially established.

Notice that Yellowstone, the first Park to be established, is now 144 years old. Yosemite & Sequoia, both of which we visited in April, are 126s old.

Yes, there are 3 Parks turning 100 this year, but they are not ‘famous’.

2019 will be THE BANNER year — with the Grand Canyon, Zion and Acadia (again).

It takes you to the non-NPS Website which I have already shared with youtwice.
