He had to have made these two BIG holes within the last 24-hours.
This tree is on our road, about 1/8-mile from our house. I walk by it at least 3 times a day — WITHOUT fail. This morning as I approached it I noticed the wood shavings on the snow. You couldn’t miss it — as you can see from the above picture. My first thought was beavers — though this is not near water, & the tree is too big. Then I looked up. WOW.
We have a LOT of woodpeckers around here. We can always hear them, year around, tap, tap, tapping away. They also come to our birdfeeders. We have BIG ones 6″ or 7″ inches in height & lots of smaller ones. I assume this had to have been a big one. This tree, like most around here, has old woodpecker holes. But, this was SO neat. Makes you humble.

Not so this year. It has been plenty cold enough — as I know, to my cost.
The runway is plowed & maintained during most of February, BUT the Valentine’s Day weekend tends to be when it is most busy. That Valentine’s was on a Sunday this year meant that there was a LOT of people on the ice — COVID notwithstanding. Most, however, wore masks. That was good.
Not that many planes. At most about 5 at any given time. I have upwards of 15. Maybe 20 in other years. But, this is NOT a normal year. Actually I have been noticing that I don’t see as many small planes about as I normally do. So much so that when I hear one I look up. Most other years I hear a few each day. Not so in 2021. I noticed that the other day when I heard one. Surprised I.
It was good to see the planes. I always make a point of trying to visit the airport at least once during its height.
There are quite a few posts, from past years, on this ‘Airport on Ice‘.

I had no idea that she had made us all some of her quintessential hand painted cards. I thought she was too busy with her new puppy & a LARGE canvas that she has been working on his Christmas. She likes her cards to be surprises. This one was indeed a very pleasant surprise. Suffice to say it made my day. She is a treasure. SMILE.
