‘Alaska’ By James A. Michener — Not One Of His Best; Maybe His Worst!
I was real disappointed. Felt like a major let down.
You could tell that he was TIRED. I knew that he must have been OLD when he wrote it. But, I did NOT check ‘HOW OLD’ until I finished. Now it is much clearer. He was 81 when he finished.
81-years old. Probably took him 2- to 3-years to write it. So, was writing it when he was in his late 70s.
ALAS, it shows. You can feel his tiredness!
This book has put me OFF Michener! I am upset by that.
But, then again I may have READ way TOO MUCH Michener — in too short of a time.
6 in two-years.
Three of them ‘Hawaii’, ‘The Covenant‘ & ‘Alaska’ huge, ‘1,000’-page books.
I loved ‘The Covenant’ & learnt much from ‘Hawaii’ — as I had done with with other books, such as ‘Texas’ & ‘Chesapeake Bay’.
Not so with ‘Alaska’.
Very disappointing. I feel cheated.
In a way I feel sorry for him. I can, also, relate. I am 66. I KNOW that I am not writing ‘as well’ or with the ‘proficiency’ I did 10-years ago. And I have another decade to go to get to Michener’s age when he wrote ‘Alaska’. YIKES!
