Guruge 2020 Papabili Series — #I
Then in December 2019 his fellow cardinal bishops elected him Vice Dean. They elected Cardinal Battista Re (b. Jan. 1934) as Dean. So, Re is already past 80 and as such will not be able to participate in the next conclave. Thus, it would be Sandri who will be the acting ‘Dean’ (the role that Re had in 2013). Being acting ‘Dean’ is certainly not a negative vis-à-vis being a papabile. Benedict XVI (i.e., Cardinal Ratzinger) was the Dean in 2005 when he was elected pope. As ‘Dean’ the electors can never lose sight of you. You are always there in the conclave — center stage, orchestrating proceedings.
But, Sandri has two definite strikes against him:
- He is another Latin American — with Francis having been the first. The electors may feel that two Latin American popes, with very similar outlooks and temperament, back-to-back might be a tad too much, particularly so in that Francis was the first from across the Atlantic. So that is Strike #1.
- Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, the famous Vatican whistleblower, has explicitly implicated Sandri in the sex abuse mire by stating that he was actively involved in the coverup of the egregious sexual misconducts of the Legionary of Christ founder, Marciel Maciel. That should be Strike #2.
His age could start to become a factor. He is currently 76 and getting older.
Francis & John XXIII were elected at 76 and Benedict XVI at 78. So, he is still ‘good’ but his age could be half-a-strike against him.
Then, there is his friendship with Francis. Francis is not as popular among the electors as had been Benedict XVI or John Paul II. So, this could be a negative, quarter-of-a-strike against him.
He, despite these strikes, remains papabile.
So, do not rule him out as yet.

I Busted My Knee, Severely, A Year Ago Today; Since Then I Have Walked 1,947-Miles & Lost Exactly 30 Lbs.
Thursday, February 28, 2019. I slipped on ice, in the morning, while shoveling snow after a snowstorm. Heard an almighty crack. Left knee was in pain and pretty useless. Did not know what had happened. Eventually got myself to the ER. I had totally busted my Quadricep Tendon. Never heard of it. Didn’t know I had one.
They were all set to operate on me the next day. I was not keen. I had a vacation booked in the Cape and, moreover, wanted some time to get my head around surgery. ONE OF THE BEST DECISIONS I EVER MADE. With a brace, I could walk and the pain wasn’t too bad.
Pain was never too bad, prior to or post surgery. Never took any of the 60 opioid pills that I was given! Most I needed was TWO Aleve.
I walked, sometimes a mile or more, in the week prior to surgery.
Was on crutches for 6-weeks. I walked with the crutches and my Garmin Fenix 5 NEVER COUNTED those steps. So, I really walked MORE MILES! Smile.
The busted knee was a wakeup call. Though I ran most days I had let my weight creep up to 176 lbs. Not good. My blood glucose had also gone up to 103. That was it. I was going to get myself fit. I went on a much stricter low-carb diet (than I had been for the last 6-years) the morning after surgery. Lost 30 lbs. Down to 146. Trying had to get to 142. That would be my lowest adult weight. But, stuck at 146 lbs. Help.
I used to ‘run’ 3.5 miles a day. Now I walk/run 7 miles a day and do 23-minutes on an exercise bike.
There was no pain to talk about
— throughout, from surgery to now.
The Last Time ‘Leap Day’, i.e., February 29, Fell On A Saturday Was 1992; Last ‘Leap Day’ Was In 2016.
How exciting. Another ‘Leap Day‘. At best, if we are lucky, we get them every 4-years. But, as you can see above, they will not get a ‘Leap Day‘ in 2100. Some of YOU might be around for that. Not that far ahead.
Last ‘Leap Day’, obviously, was 4-years ago, to the DAY, in 2016.

Do NOT panic.
It is NOT a showstopper.
It does not mess you up.
It prints OK.
So, the issue is that YOU put in $3000 and it AUTOMATICALLY puts the MINUS in front, though it is a field in ‘parenthesis’, i.e., already negative. So, we have a DOUBLE negative.
But, this error isn’t carried over to the 1040. That is good.
Also prints OK.
So do NOT panic.
Enjoy. Happy 2019 Taxes. Smile.
In the Winter, in New Hampshire, I see Orion in the night sky whenever it is cloudfree.
I have been checking on Betelgeuse. It would be quite something to see a Supernova.
I go out, at night, walking, TWICE a night. So, if it is cloudfree, I can observe the heavens.
I too had noticed that Betelgeuse had got brighter, and more orange, in the last few days.
Then, I started seeing the media reports. So, I was not alone.
Just wanted to keep you in the loop. Go out and look up. It is quite the sight.
