I Now Wear FOUR Knee Braces (Plus Studded Shoes) When I Go Out In The Snow/Ice!

by Anura Guruge

IF you want to be ultra pedantic
2 of the braces are ‘compression sleeves’.

But, this is my new regime for snow/ice.

These go on first for muscle/tendon support.

Then, these on top of those.

The lockable brace, LOCKED at 0° on my left injured knee,
the other on my right, so far uninjured knee.

Studded shoes.
But, have to be careful. You can slip/slide on them.

Walking stick with crampon to top it all off!

Living in New Hampshire I can’t escape snow and ice. Though we now have a monster 3-stage snowblower, with tracs, I still need to be out in the snow/ice — and I still do some shovelling. PLUS, I have to get in my 6 — 7 miles of walking.

After my slip-and-fall 10-months ago when I busted my quad tendon, I am rather anxious not to damage my knees again. Hence the precautions.

Since my injury (even prior to surgery) I started wearing a knee brace.

I now wear knee braces, on both knees, ALL DAY. I don’t need to, but they help and I have, honestly, become addicted to them! As my surgeon has said, it will not do any har. Might even do some good.

But, I know that it is the sudden ‘twisting’/extension of the knee/leg tendon/muscles that lead to injury. Hence, the locked brace and the semi-locked one. Hoping that if I do fall, and that seems odds-on, they might help keep the knee straight. That is the theory.

Just sharing with you, just in case.

All the braces are from Amazon. The compression sleeves are cheap; i.e., under $7/each.

I had my quadriceps tendon repair surgery,
at ‘
Frisbie Memorial Hospital‘ —
performed by Dr. Charles Blitzer
of ‘Seacoast Orthopedics
on Thursday, March 7, 2019.

There was no pain to talk about
— throughout, from surgery to now.
