Have You Heard Of ‘Erythritol’, The Healthy, Natural Carbohydrate (i.e., Sugar)?
I was standing at a ‘Market Basket‘ supermarket checkout this afternoon when I fancied a drink, it being a warm day. These Bai drinks were right next to I so I took one, and by force of habit, read the LABEL. For the last 6-years I rarely, if ever, eat or drink something, WITHOUT reading the label — IF it has one. I try, real hard, to limit my carbs.
So, I am NO STRANGER to Nutritional Labels and especially the Carbohydrate numbers. Trust me when I tell you that this is the first time I have seen ‘Erythritol’ on a label. I was confounded. I knew it had to be a sugar since it was listed as a carbs. What I didn’t know was how bad it would be for I.
So, I had to check.
To be fair I think the jury is still out. I am NOT going to rush off and start consuming large quantities of Erythritol. It seems too good to be true, and in my dotage I am leery of such products.
I also looked up when they started adding (the likes of) Erythritol to food labels. Appears that the FDA gave this the green light in 2009 — 10-years ago. But, reporting it, as yet, from what I can see, appears to be voluntary! That means all manufacturers do not have to list it — which would explain why I had never seen it before.
