150th Anniversary Of The ‘Golden Spike’ — Completion Of The Transcontinental Railroad — Today, May 10, 2019.
As some of you have discovered I am an unashamed train buff. I even have train sets — though all only partially completed.
So, there was no way, in hell, I was going to miss celebrating the 150th-anniversary of Promontory Summit (UT) — and the Golden Spike.
The building of the ‘Central Pacific’, with all of the ingenuity, intrigue and investment that it involved, has fascinated me since I read Irving Stone’s epic “Men to Match My Mountains: The Monumental Saga of the Winning of America’s Far West“. It got me all steamed up about how this amazing railway was built. I immediately went and bought a bunch of books on the subject but have not had the time to get around the reading any of them — other than look at the pictures. The story of my current life.
So, there was no way I was going to let this anniversary slip by, uncommented upon. Plus, I wanted to make sure you knew about it.
That Union Pacific has rolled out some of their iconic Big Boy locomotives to mark the anniversary makes it even more special for I. I love the Big Boy and still have one.
