‘Argyria’, Turning Blue, Permanently, From Ingesting Too Much Silver!

I had never heard of it, or seen any pictures of blue people, until I read about ‘Argyria’ in the above book last night. Wow. And here is the craziest thing — this permanent blueness MIGHT not kill ya! Silver is a very powerful antibacterial. Hence, why some folks go overboard taking it.
This book by Sam Kean is pretty amazing. I actually bought 3 of his books; this being the first I am reading. It is all about the elements, the periodic table and atoms. Pretty technical stuff BUT I am loving it because I am learning something fascinating on every page. So much about the elements, especially the obscure ones, that I knew nothing about. This book is not ‘light’ Summer reading BUT if you want to learn about the elements it is excellent.
As for the spoon. Gallium. Ever heard of gallium? I had not. Remember I did chemistry nearly 40-years ago. In those days we didn’t go too deep into the periodic table.
Actually, have you ever wondered WHY it is called the periodic table rather than say ‘Table of Elements’?

If MY Queen, Elizabeth II, Really Did Say This, I Am So Happy & Proud.
Click for U.K. “Daily Mail” original.
I can definitely see the Queen saying that. She is all CLASS and propriety. I also know that she is stoutly loyal and protective of her staff.
What kind of seems incongruous is that of the then 92-year old Queen quietly breezing into the kitchen. Yes, possible but I doubt that it is something she does routinely. Maybe she was checking up on Meghan.
I was not always a monarchists. It took me time to warm up this Queen and once I did there was no stopping I. I have come to realize and appreciate what a TREASURE she is and how lucky we are. My fondness and respect for MY Queen does not extend to all members of the Royal family. I still have a decent and long memory. Some of them were, and possibly still are, twerps. I can see Prince Philip being brusque with the staff. But, luckily, he is not our king.
Anywho, this made my day — if it is true. Wanted to share it with you.

The ‘Caster Semenya’ Testosterone Decision Bothers Me.
I actually see, and can appreciate, all sides of this sad and unfortunate story.
But, this decision that ‘she’ has to take testosterone lowering drugs in order to compete bothers me MUCH.
It wasn’t as if she ever CHEATED or took testosterone boosting drugs.
From all that we know — and have been told — this is how ‘she’ was born and grew up. ‘She’ never did anything to change her body chemistry.
So why is she being penalized? That seems like unfair discrimination.
It bothers me.

‘Kate Bunce’, A British Painter That I Discovered Today.
I have been a long-term subscriber to this Facebook page:
Consequently, I am rewarded each day with quite a few examples of art that I have never seen before. I always try to stop and study. Invariably, alas, I am short of time to research the artists as much as I would like.
The Kate Bunce painting, at top, however, stopped me in my tracks. Struck a chord. I found the color, the detail and composition very pleasing. It could have been the work of a Renaissance great! Then I saw she was British. So, I made a note of her name. I then went back tonight to look her up.
I wanted to share her with you. Yes, she is not unique but she sure has a je ne sais quoi touch.
