I have always said that going to ‘Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center‘ (DHMC), in Lebanon, N.H. is like visiting a resort rather than a high-end, full-function hospital. They go out of their way to make the environment soothing and pleasing to the senses. You are surrounded by very high-class art and if you are lucky, as I was this morning, with live music from a piano player at a grand.
They had works by Milford (N.H.) artist ‘William Cheever Turner‘ on display in one wing. I had never heard of him and I wish I had. His work, as you can see, is quite spectacular. I took a few pictures so I could SHARE them with you. You have to check out his. The level of detail and realism is phenomenal.
It was a good day overall, and we were not there for anything serious. These paintings made my morning.

There are many nice things about the ‘Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center‘ (DHMC), in Lebanon, N.H. They go to GREAT lengths to make it NOT look and feel like a hospital. I kid you not. I have spent a LOT of time at DHMC over the last 13-years. For one, Teischan was born there, and I was there for 3-days on the trot for that.
They have a lot of great art and a number of grands strategically positioned around the rambling campus. This is the one closest to the main entrance. Anybody is welcome to play them, Typically volunteers set out to regale the folks. This appeared to be one of them. Fairly good chance he works there.
This was quite early in the morning, i.e., around 9:30am. But, it was Valentine’s Day. So, it was good. I liked him. You can hear me clapping.
What is MOST significant with Kevin Joseph Farrell’s appointment is that he is a non-European. A first, and as such, of course, the first American Camerlengo.
Do not read too much into this appointment. It does not indicate that a conclave is around the corner. Having a Camerlengo, on tap, is more normal than not having one. The 7-month gap, though possibly a tad long, is not exceptional. Popes like to wait awhile before they fill this post. Not having a Camerlengo, if the pope was to die, is not the end of the world. It happened when Pius XII died in 1958. The Dean of the College of Cardinals deputized on day 1 and then they elected a cardinal to act as the temporary Camerlengo.
We have had non-Italian Camerlenghi. The last Camerlengo, Jean-Louis Tauran, was French. So was Jean Villot, the iconic Camerlengo of the 1970s. We have also had a Spaniard, Eduardo Martínez Somalo, 1993 to 2007. So, these are the recent non-Italians. But, there was also a spate of French ones in the 14th century during the Avignon Papacy.
Choosing Farrell makes sense. At 71 he is of the right age, though one a few years younger would have made more sense. He is also a curialist; i.e., he works at the Vatican. That is a prerequisite. The Camerlengo has to reside in Rome.
So, this is all good.
Just don’t assume that a conclave is around the corner. Just revel in that he is non-European. A most welcome departure from what had been a 2,000-year custom.

Come on. Let me hear you say ‘Aaahhhh!’ — with feeling.
Doesn’t it warm the cockles of your heart.
A sculpture at the ‘Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center‘ (DHMC), in Lebanon, N.H. Despite how special it is, this is tucked away, on the 5th floor (depending on how you count the floors), off the beaten-track. I was exploring and bumped into it.
Wanted to share with you given it is Valentine’s Day and all.

This was my Valentine’s Day card — created by her on the day while we were gone for an appointment. As with all her work — it is pretty amazing. She can now dash these off in no-time. The blinking-beautiful Chinese umbrella, which she finished last week, however, remains her current masterpiece until she decides that she wants to surpass that.
