I had the honor of meeting Donald Hall once. It was probably 19-years ago and I think it was in Tilton (or thereabouts) in a church hall. He was doing a book signing for the ‘Ox-Cart Man‘. My son Matthew, very young at the time, loved that book. I went, with some friends from Meredith, to get an autographed copy. I suspect that that book is in this house somewhere. I hope the kids did not give it away.

Great man. I could take or leave his poetry, but I am not big into poetry. But, that is my loss.

If you are not familiar with the ‘Ox-Cart Man’ you really should check it out. It is lavishly illustrated too.

Donald Hall (1928 – 2018), RIP.

    Mr. Guruge,

I’ve been a blog reader since the “Popes and Papacy” days. I know you don’t post much about the Cardinals anymore, but i was wondering if you had any thoughts about yesterdays unprecedented elevation of 4 Cardinals to the rank of Cardinal Bishop (when no vacancies existed in the 6 normal slots):

what do you think is the reasoning behind it? Is it simply a reflection of the fact that the existing Cardinal-Bishops are old and tired and none of them want to be Dean? Or do you think this might have something to do with politics inside the Curia and Francis needing to elevate his own folks?

    Richard
