The Demise Of ‘Focus Magic’ Lytro, The New Huawei P20 Pro 1/1.7″ Sensor & The Google Pixel 3.

 by Anura Guruge

I am fairly sure that there will be a Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL for Christmas 2018 — given that the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL were launched for 2017.

When the Pixel 2 (XL) was unveiled it was considered to have the best camera on any smartphone and captured the highest ‘DxO’ rating given to a camera phone; ‘DxO’ a test for overall camera image quality. The Huawei P20 Pro has beaten the Pixel 2 by over 10 points in the ‘DxO’ rating! Google is not going to like that. Part of the P20s success comes from his unprecedentedly large 1/1.7″ sensor. For a phone that is huge. Google will have to combat that somehow.

I doubt whether the Pixel 3 will have a triple-camera like the P20 Pro, but I suspect we might finally get a dual.

But, this is where the Lytro technology can prove to be so intriguing.

I have watched Lytro since they introduced the Illum and even rented one for a week in 2016 for Devanee to play around with. She liked it; I was not impressed. I am not, as I point out DAILY, into post-processing of images. So, I always suspected that Lytro would fold and now they have.

I am sure that Google can IMPROVE on Lytro’s magic and incorporate into its ‘Computational Photography‘ capabilities. That would be sweet.

So, this was a big week: Lytro and the Huawei P20 Pro.

I suspect we will start getting hot rumors of the Google Pixel 3 in September 2018.

Just remember where you read all of this first. {Smile}
