Australians, understandably, do not like to commemorate it as such, but January 26, 1788 — 230-years ago, was when the first shipment of British convicts landed in Sydney Cove, Australia to become the First European settlement in Australia.

They like to call it Australia Day. We, the Brits, understand. We always remember what it means. Cheers.

India Republic Day, January 26, should NOT be confused with Indian Independence Day — August 15.

Two separate things. India got its Independence from Britain on August 15, 1947.

Republic Day, 2 years and 5 months later, was when it became a secular, democratic State with a new Constitution. OK?
