I Am Buying More Wine To Show My Solidarity To Those Affected By The California Wildfires.

From the U.K. “Daily Mail”, October 15, 2017. Click to access original.

So, after my post of yesterday, as to how bad I am feeling about the damage to the Californian wine industry, I decided today to go out and start buying MORE Californian wine to show my support and solidarity. It is a small gesture, BUT it is from the heart. I want to do my part. I urge you to join me in this.

That much of this year’s crop has been gathered is a huge relief. But, we know that the region and wineries are devastated. I just worry that we are going to see a flood of bitter, hard-to-drink South American wine pouring into the country. Resist. Stand with California.

Friedrich Nietzsche, The Trendy Philosopher, Was Born This Day, 173-Years Ago; October 15, 1844.

I never studied philosophy on a formal basis, all my formal education having been British-based, where you opt to specialize in ‘Science’ or ‘Arts’ around the age of 15. Since I opted for ‘Science’, I ended up with a B.Sc. (Hons) in 1974 & M.Sc. (with Distinction) in 1979, without ever having studied any ‘Arts’.

However, in 2002, I wrote a paper on philosophy, focused on Nietzsche, for a ‘friend’. I did it in a couple of hours using her textbook and some quick Web research. I found it fairly easy to ‘crack him’. She got an ‘A’ for that paper. That cracked me up. Philosophy can’t be that hard!

Come on. Nietzsche. Sounds like a butter. Smile. He would want you to.

RED LETTER DAY IN WORLD HISTORY. The Gregorian Calendar First Used, This Day, 435-Years Ago.

Pope Gregory XIII papal bull ‘Inter gravissimas’ in its original Latin form.

English translation of the key paragraph from Inter gravissimas. From: myweb.ecu.edu

Pretty significant day. The Papal States, France, Poland and Spain adopted the revolutionary Gregorian calendar on Thursday, October 4, 1582 — the NEXT DAY then having become Friday, October 15, 1582. Pretty incredible. 10-days were just expunged. Gone. Poof. If your birthday fell between October 5 to October 14, you were out of luck in 1582. Your birthday vanished.

In reality the adoption of the calendar did not cause much of a stir. Much of the European population, at the time, were not that concerned about daily calendars. They went by the seasons and each day as it unfolded.

But, this was a BIG day. It demarcated history’s very timeline!

We went to ‘Appleview Orchard‘, to pick apples, as we have done every October, for the last 6-years. It is a fun place and extremely picturesque — in multiple dimensions. I always look forward to taking pictures in addition to communing with the apples.

In addition to apples, pumpkins and all things associated with apples, the owners, Dennis and Mary, always makes sure that there plenty of floral treats. This year was no exception. So, I am sharing the flowers of ‘Appleview Orchard‘ with you. Enjoy.

Apple Picking At “Appleview Orchard”, Pittsfield, New Hampshire — October 14, 2017.

We have been going to ‘Appleview Orchard‘, to pick apples, every fall, for the last 6-years, with relish — without fail. So, today was our 2017 outing, and as ever, it was fulfilling and rewarding — even if I abstained from eating a full apple fritter (let alone three). Over the years we have got to know the owners, Dennis and Mary, and it is always good to see them. It should also be mentioned that they have two links to this blog from their ‘Appleview Orchard’ Website.

We typically go slightly earlier in October BUT going mid-October was fine. Still a LOT of apples left on the trees and a tad less people. Beautiful day. Gorgeous to take pictures. I always look forward to that.

We had fun. Got a lot apples and two pumpkins. Teischan had her customary ice cream and apple fritters. So, it was a good afternoon out. I got a LOT of great pictures. {Smile}
