My 1971 copy of ‘Pearl’. Shot with my TABLET (for ease)!

I remember hearing about her death. I was NOT a big fan of hers at the time. I only got into ‘her’ once ‘Pearl‘ came out — and “Me & Bobby McGee” is one of my ‘go-to’ favorite songs.

In October 1970 I was 17-years old and had just started my second (and last year) at Mill Hill. Music was BIG at Mill Hill. All the kids, this being a private school in North London, had the money to buy LPs etc.

That I still have ‘Pearl’ in LP form, 46-years later is a miracle. I only have (and I just counted) 42 LPs, from what was a library of over 650 LPs in mid-1980s. That ‘Pearl’ made the cut, over and over again, as I culled my collection says a lot for Janice.

I have no sympathy, patience, time or empathy for the rich-and-famous who have addiction problems — and die from it. To me that is sheer indulgence. Walk in my SHOES to see what it is like to have a HARD LIFE and the most I take is a glass of red wine a day. So, there is that.

Anywho …

She was special. Pity she killed herself — and for what. She had ALL to live for! That is the shame.

The Space Age Started This Day, 60-Years Ago, With The Soviet Launched Sputnik 1; October 4, 1957.

The Sputnik.

I remember it well. I had just turned 4. It was BIG news in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). We did NOT have TV in the country at that stage, but it was covered, extensively, in the newspapers and radio.

My adoptive father, a news and political junkie, was excited. Much of what I heard and learnt was from him.

And then there was my surrogate father, a white, Baptist, lawyer (for the Ceylon Ministry of Food) who was BIG into dabbling in things electrical — so much so that all of his other nephews and nieces, bar I, called him ‘Light Mama‘ (i.e., Light-father, the ‘light’ a reference to his fondness for all things electric). I just called him ‘Ta‘. That happens to be the first two letters of ‘Tatta‘ — our Sinhalese name for ‘father’ (and very similar to the Yiddish word for father). I called my adoptive father, ‘Tatta’, and my surrogate father ‘Ta’. Makes sense, right?

Well, ‘Ta’, was very excited too in his reserved, dignified, lawyerly manner. He managed to tune one of his many radios, some built from scratch by him using vacuum tubes, to hear the ‘beep … beep’ signal.

60-years ago. Wow.

You know that I got to meet Yuri Gagarin, the first man EVER in space, when he visited Ceylon 4-years after the Sputnik.

The Rather Strange, 16-Lens/Sensor, “Light L16” ‘Light Capture Device’ (Rather Than Camera).

 by Anura Guruge

I created this annotated, augmented diagram so you can get a quick overview. Base picture, of course, from ‘Light’. Click to ENLARGE.

For reasons I cannot explain this strange device never registered on my radar until a few days ago — even though it appears that there have been prototypes since 2015.

A cute idea BUT the lenses are titchy and PLASTIC.

Plus, as far as I am concerned it is NOT a real camera! Why? It does NOT have a built-in image processor. [OK. I stand corrected. It appears to have ‘3’ BUT they only produce a 3MP image for ‘social media sharing’! So, if you just rely on those INBOARD ‘image processors’ this is a 3MP camera.] It produces raw data that has to be processed on a computer to create the image. Yikes. Not my cup of tea given my aversion to all forms of post-processing.

Reminds me MUCH of the now ‘defunct’ Lytro Illum and I just saw one on eBay for $450!

This is the best ‘review’ that I have seen for this gizmo.

Has absolutely no appeal to I. I do not have the time or patience for post-processing. What I like is to take pictures in JPEG and posts the ones that came out good. Learn from the bad ones and tomorrow is another day.

I am sure that by this time next year this ‘do-da’ will down to $450. Be interesting to see.

This, however, may appeal to some of you PhotoShop fans.

Oh, the 52MP resolution is also way too high for my liking.
