The Patent For Levi’s Jeans With Copper Rivets Was Granted This Day 144 Years Ago; May 20, 1873.

U.S Patent 139,121 to Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss. Click here for the Wikipedia entry.

Davis was the tailor, Strauss the merchant who sold cloth — including denim. It was Davis who came up with the idea of using rivets as reinforcement.

Pretty amazing. Spare a thought. 144 years ago.
