The Paddy Kelly (Of ‘The Brigadoons’), Christmas CD (2016) — Blinking Brilliant!

by Anura Guruge

The CD that I ordered, from Paddy, arrived today, in the mail.

I knew it would be good, but Paddy Kelly (yet again) managed to exceed to all expectations.

It is not just good, it is BLINKING BRILLIANT.

It is really Master Class.

I have, consistently, referred to Paddy as a Maestro and this CD affirms my belief.

He has such a rich, powerful and melodious voice. I think it is a Baritone but I am not good on that stuff.

All I know is that this CD is extremely conducive to the ear.

Love it.

You really need to get it.

And a Video

Oh Come All Ye Faithful” is my all time favorite Christmas song.

I am, per my own admission, quite the connoisseur when it comes to “Oh Come All Ye Faithful“.

If it isn’t good, I can tell.

And, let me please assure you that Paddy’s rendition is World Class.

So, I tried, MY BEST, to try and share it with you. Some caveats. I don’t like shooting videos. I rarely shoot video and this is THE FIRST video I have shot with this camera. So, please excuse all the limitations. I know I don’t do Paddy justice and I probably have exploited his copyright (but I know he will be cool with that).

Listen, watch, ENJOY. It is MUCH BETTER in ‘person’. This video is poor. Sorry.

There will be a fair amount of interest this year since Chanukah/Hanukkah First Night, falls on Christmas Eve.

That is special. Only the 4th time it has fallen on Christmas Even since 1900.

Chanukah/Hanukkah First Night can also fall on Christmas Day, as it did in 2005 and will again in 2024.

But, given the 8-day span of Chanukah/Hanukkah this ‘Chrismukkah’ conjunction can happen any time Chanukah/Hanukkah falls December 18th and Christmas day.

This has happened 33 times since 1900 to 2016: 1902, 1905, 1908, 1910, 1913, 1916, 1921, 1924, 1927, 1932, 1935, 1940, 1943, 1946, 1951, 1954, 1959, 1962, 1965, 1970, 1973, 1978, 1981, 1984, 1989, 1992, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2011 & 2016.

It will happen 20 times between next year and 2099: 2019, 2022, 2024, 2027, 2030, 2035, 2038, 2046, 2049, 2054, 2057, 2065, 2068, 2073, 2076, 2084, 2087, 2092, 2095 & 2098.

You don’t have to wait long. Next one is in but 3 years! 2019.

Seems like a fair assessment.

Still image quality (IQ) & autofocus (AF) are highly rated as is “One of the best APS-C cameras at high ISO”. So all of that is good. This is encouraging too: “Still this is the most powerful and usable Sony APS-C camera to date. It can keep up on the sidelines and in the gymnasium with its DSLR competitors thanks to its excellent AF system and impressive buffer.”

From everything I have heard (and I have done a fair amount of digging on this camera) the criticism of the touchscreen is justified. Shame Sony couldn’t get this right.

The 85% score is impressive and up there with the TOP contenders.

But, it did NOT get a GOLD award — because the overall score does not necessarily correspond to the award.

The score, basically, is a technical assessment of the features and capabilities.

The award, however, is subjective and factors in ‘user friendliness’, character and appeal. And that I understand. I feel the same — and have said so. It is not a fun camera to use!
