Think – Today: How Did We Get The Mile?
Well for those of us that are lucky enough to still be able to use the GOOD Ol’ Imperial System the ‘Mile’ is a major unit of measurement. So, where and how did we get the ‘mile’?
Think first, then research, then THINK again. Think for the pleasure of thinking.
Yesterday’s ‘Think’: “Most widely spoken languages” — English, is not, at least as yet, #1. The keyword here having been ‘spoken’ as opposed to ‘understood’ or ‘known’. ‘Spoken’ denotes the language used in everyday life. In that context Chinese and Spanish come ahead of English — with English only being able to lay claims to 335 million speakers, whereas Chinese is the mother tongue of over 1.1 BILLION! However, it is estimated that at least 1/2 BILLION ADDITIONAL people, worldwide, understand English or can speak it as a second (or third) language. If you add that to the 335 Million English would surpass Spanish. The interesting thing, especially with the Web, is that familiarity with English is continually on the rise.
