I have watched all three South Africa v. England 2015 – 2016 Test Matches with great interest — and like Ian Botham was moved to tears when Temba Bavuma scored his maiden Test century. During the 2rd Test I heard AB being mentioned a few times as the Captain. I thought that the commentators, not always sober, had just got it wrong. I try not to read cricket news BECAUSE I do not want to know the scores and results before I get a chance to watch the matches on Willow Cricket via Sling.

I have always liked Hashim Amla. Great cricket, wonderful personality, a good man. I had no idea he was a muslim and had issues as a result. During the Indian series I thought there was something wrong with him. Appears it was the burden of captaincy. I also had NO idea that AB had never been SA Test captain prior to this. I thought Amla took over from him.

Appears that everybody is happy. That is good. I am still in shock at the way SA collapsed during the 2nd innings of the 3rd Test. Do not expect that from SA.

Handmade, Welded Metal 18″ Lobster Wall Hanging From Maine.

by Anura Guruge

We bought one of these handmade lobsters when we went to Rockland, Maine on Sunday. Actually buying this lobster was one of the reasons for that quick, day visit. They are made by Deanna’s great-nephew, who is a professional welder. He makes them to order. Each one, as such, is slightly different. It is cute. Deanna, a lobsterman’s daughter, likes to have lobster memorabilia around.

IF you would like one too we can order it for you. $300 + shipping (at cost). You can pay by PayPal or by check. Just e-mail me (my e-mail is on the sidebar).

Epson’s New High Ink Capacity ‘EcoTank’ Printers Look A Good Deal — IF You Do A Lot Of Printing.

by Anura Guruge

Though we don’t have one in the house right now, I am quite partial to Epson printers. In 2008, for about 5 months, I was a ‘weekend warrior‘ for Epson, promoting their printers at Best Buy, Concord. It was a blast. One of the best jobs I have had in terms of its enjoyment-quotient — and that was because the printers, in terms of function/price, was so easy to sell. More than once I was able to sell every single Epson printer we had in the store during a 6-hours shift.

I happened to hear about this ‘EcoTank‘ printers on a Tech Talk Show driving back from Rockland, Maine on Sunday night. The notion of refillable ink tanks appeals to me. So on Monday I checked them out on Amazon. They are NOT cheap, the ET-2550 priced at $393. But I am sure the goal is that you will pay for the printer, say over 4 years, in terms of cheaper ink. We don’t do enough printing to justify one of these printers. But I thought I should bring them to your attention.

Lake Winnipesaukee, NH 2016: 4th Time In 170 Years When NOT Fully Frozen?

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. Taken on Monday, January 18, 2016 from Varney Point Left (where we lived for 10 years). Looking north towards Mt. Washington, in between Locks Island (to right) and Timber.

Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire’s iconic BIG Lake, is largely unfrozen right now — and I drove by the Lake yesterday (Jan. 19) again. Suffice to say this is somewhat atypical THOUGH my records (read blog posts here) indicate that on February 5, 2014 we were in a similar situation. But that is two weeks out and much can happen in New Hampshire, when it comes to weather, anytime of the year. But a quick look at ‘weather underground’ tells me that we have a 3-day warming trend, i.e., temps above freezing, early next week. So it is going to be close. I doubt, very much, whether we will have the Alton ‘Airport on the Ice‘ this year — last year having been a banner year.

IF the lake does not totally freeze over, i.e., no ice-in, this will be ONLY the 4th instance of that phenomenon in ~170 years (that is when they started keeping records).

But here is what is scary and intriguing. ALL 4 of these NO ice-ins would have occurred during my time in and around this Lake, I having moved up here, full-time, from Southern NH, in 1996.

The prior NO ice-outs occurred: 2013-2014, 2000-2001 & 1998-1999. I talk about these more in the above cited Feb. 5, 2014 link.

I will of course keep an eye on this and keep you posted. Note that no ice-in does NOT mean that we will not have an ice-out! Ice-out is not contingent on us having an ice-in. Some, if not all, Bays, e.g., Alton Bay, are indeed frozen. Well Alton Bay for one and Meredith for another need to be ice-free for ice-out to be declared. Get that?

Easter (Unlike Christmas) HAS To Be On A Sunday — So It Cannot Be On A Fixed Date.

by Anura Guruge

march2016easterAs I have been reporting, here and here, there is yet again a concerted push among Christian Church leaders to standardize the day on which Easter is celebrated. And I have been thinking about it. Unlike Christmas, which is a ‘new’ (at most 400 years old) artificial, coopted (from Winter solstice celebration) holiday, Easter, considered the MOST significant of Christian holiday, has to be celebrated on a Sunday — immediately following Easter Friday.

So Church leaders cannot designate a fixed date for Easter, such as say March 27. It has to be a Sunday. The best they will be able to do is to say, similar to Labor Day, Memorial Day or Thanksgiving, is ‘last Sunday of March‘ or ‘first Sunday of April‘ . Get it.
